Why is diet considered one of the most potent tools in protecting the brain against Alzheimer’s disease?
Even though we’ve made enormous strides in Alzheimer’s diagnosis and treatment over the years, your diet is still one of the major keys when it comes to prevention. And for good reason. When it comes to brain health, food isn’t just fuel, it becomes part of you. You literally are what you eat.
I’m excited to welcome Dr. Richard Isaacson, MD, to our show today. Dr. Isaacson is a Preventive Neurologist at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases. In 2013, he founded and directed the first Alzheimer’s prevention clinic in the US. He’s also the author of several books, including The Alzheimer’s Prevention & Treatment Diet: Using Nutrition to Combat the Effects of Alzheimer’s Disease.
You already know a healthy diet is important for your overall health. But the truth is, an unhealthy diet has significant negative effects on your brain, even causing areas like the hippocampus to shrink. If you want to understand how to use nutrition to better your long-term brain health, this episode is for you.

I have been following a very lowcarb lifestyle since ten years. I take no medication, I am very active in my community, and I am an 87 years old, 112 lbs lady. Unbelievable compared to twenty years ago….

Hi, I have a friend who has the beginning of dementia, and I wanted to send him some tubes. It seems that the only KZfaq that I can find are speaking so quickly without graphics or images of what would be good to eat that it would be hard for somebody who is struggling cognitively to understand the KZfaq, I have reversed di diabetes from being 180 pounds and 60 units of insulin to 120 pounds and no insulin. I did this by testing after I ate to see what made my blood sugar rise now we have much better information about foods, but eight years ago we didn’t have that information is as clearly stated. In my job as an activities Director often in the Alzheimer’s unit I found ways of stimulating peoples cognitive function. Through music through creating a sent a place that seemed familiar like a café setting. Often the nursing home provided foods sticky buns, and other high carb foods, that I would no longer use. Anyway, Jim try to create some videos that can be shared with folks who are a bit slow.

Great interview of the subject that is very important - a huge fan of Dr Isaacson. Love the format, low keyed, but hit the many critical points. Based on my Dr visits, I would put exercise to be one of the top 3. A 62 YO, healthy, sub-20 BMI, runner (ran 2700 miles, 53 races from Mile to Ultra in 2023, top 5% in the country), VO2 max mid-60s .. hope to stay ahead of dimentia/Alzeimer. Just ordered Limitless.

All of the matriarchs in my family had Alzheimer's disease and it's was the most devastating thing to watch those once beautiful and strong women deteriorate from. I also worked on the dementia units in nursing homes for over 20 plus years and had to go through tons training and no matter what it's the worse disease aside from cancer to watch someone you love die from 😢

There are many risk factors that contribute to Alzheimers. Diet is one of the risk factors. Lack of sleep is also another identified risk factors, along with other risk factors mentioned by other people.

Genetics loads the gun, environment cocks it. I’m sorry to hear about your mom, its most frustrating when we can’t figure out why. My aunt had lung cancer and no known risk factors….

12:34 This point right here is discribing me in a nut shell. My father had Alzhimers or at least it was believed that was the form of Dimentia he had. (I think there are 6 different types.) I often worry if I am starting to show signs. And yes the apprehention, fear, anxiety, and depression (thinking it's inevitable) all are working inside my mind and body and I am sure it's to no good effect.

I consume a lot of onion, garlic, red pepper and others vegetables in my diet, in my city there is a lot of good water with alkalinic ph, over 8, and I drink it every single day, however I consume also that is called unhealthy food, but I consume them pretty care, never exaggerating. Somedays I don´t eat a lot and that day I lunch one time and drink a lot of water. I practice running four times in a week sometimes five. I go to the doctor one time a year and I do a complete exame of my heart and my blood. I feel really good with this way that I chose to live. Valuable content. Greetings from Porto Feliz city, a contryside of state of São Paulo, in Brazil.
