Very true the overwhelming majority of our suffering only happens in our minds where it can last year's, even a lifetime. The physical effect of the Bee sting is a fleeting experience while the memory and emotional effect of the Bee sting can be a life sentence, if decide to bear a grudge against the Bee. It's the story our minds create about the event that so often does far more damage than the actual event itself could ever do. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

grateful to Tolle & so many others for spotlighting this affliction of "the voice(s) in my head". i don't know how many drunk tanks, 5150s, or hospitalizations occur becuz of it, but never once did a doctor, psychiatrist or psychologist suggest that i look in this direction. Edit: addiction to drink & or whatever, when i quit the addiction, the voice in my head if i listened to it would try to steer the conversation in the direction of a drink, the narrative is causing unnecessary burden, if i notice the self talk in the head, something is noticing, anyways, this lesson is a help to me now

IME, it's helpful to realize that your conscious state is just 5% of your brain, and _emerges_ from the other 95% unconscious brain. Consider how dreams are (bizarre, irrational, symbolic). Your conscious experience emerges from that murky realm. It also emerges about 1/2-second after the fact. We are in a continuous state of "selfing" (one moment to the next). Those experiences of the moment occur about 1/2-second late. My point being that your conscious mind inflates itself into being the source of all this, making sense of it, rationalizing emergent feelings into the now as if it's due to the now. Often it's not. It's repressed, dis-integrated trauma, anger, shame that "leaks" into our relatively "produced" conscious state. We (as 5% of all this) exist on the other side of that, receiving it, and trying to make it "real." A lot of it isn't real. We should be commended for the effort. It's good natured. But, it's misplaced effort. It takes no effort to recognize "this isn't happening now... I don't need to give space to it within myself. it's just an echo from the past, adding noise to my emerged sense of conscious existence. I can be aware of what is or isn't happening now, and let the noise pass through me. Just because it emerges as real doesn't mean it is." The only thing that's real is this present moment. Everything else is a story we tell ourselves. You're not _consciously_ telling it to yourself. You're just consciously believing it for no reason other than it's emerging along with your conscious experience.

@@andrereloaded1425 _"keep telling myself...that Karma will visit them."_ I don't think that's a good thing to do. It's a passive way of identifying with your anger. They could just as realistically have an awakening and reverse the karma they've incurred. Would you want that for them? Maybe deferring to that thought would be better (more charitable and well-wishing than what sounds like hoping for their suffering). What I'm about to say isn't very popular with people who've had your experience. Often, people who have suffered the most from a narcissist were often attracted to that person in a way others aren't. There was enmeshment, engulfment that they often describe as being "magical" or more than normal. Both parties pushed each other's buttons in a way others don't? Then, it becomes more abusive, more pathologically stuck in the head as a defining experience (again, magic rather than just bad luck). Consuming. Those people often play into that with realization of how bad that other person was, imbuing them with near-supernatural power, evil, etc. The experience justifies it. But, in so doing, they miss a bigger opportunity to assess "how did I get into this? unlike so many others? How did I ignore all the warning signs that would have sent others fleeing?" That's where the real gold is (for moving on, "live & learn"). It's the only thing you have control over: you were part of it to some degree. Anger at the other person could be projection of what you can't see in yourself. That leads nowhere. Nothing I said above may apply. I don't know enough about what happened, the relationship you had. But, I do know that what I said often does apply, and it can be very triggering to consider. It can be met with reflexive defensiveness, more hostility expressed toward the abuser (which is justified, but may lead nowhere). It's worth considering. If there's no "there" there, it doesn't hurt to consider it.

& we all have this awareness of being within us. my sense is that the difference between a conflicted mind & minds like Tolle (& some others) is that he has learned (thru many lifetimes of suffering?) the vital need to let go of the non-essential mental noise/dross/pollution. once the false has been let go of & not renewed by mental effort, what is left to experience? a freedom that is not only not at war with truth but inseparable from truth and therein lies that peace that passes all understanding. ...but this comment is just another arrangement & reconfiguration of the 26 letters of the english alphabet (plus punctuation). 🙏💜🕯️🌱🐾👣🌿🌎🕊️

if you are using KNOWING, as mental awareness, as the basis for TRUTH, it could be said, "the cart is in front of the horse". if you have known your parents love, or any ones willingness to be compassionate and understanding, you have witnessed a most fundamental experience of stabilizing your sense of self. in being SELF AWARE, to experience from this (compassionate/caring/loving "view" or position, is most fundamental in "knowing who you are". to keep this view unencumbered from pretensive preferences of others or society, is to maintain this experience without bias or prejudice. here, the HEART RULES THE HEAD. from this fundamental understanding or what serves your sense of stability/equilibrium, to do so with another human being is to know friendship, compassion, kindness, love. ( to view nature from this same vantage point is know "the primal vision" or to be in direct relations with, to experience the reality of it, not what you want it to be) . the YIN/YANG notion then, is the experience of dynamic equilibrium as it symbolizes an equilibrium of the forces stabilizing the human experience (which equates to compassion/love in the human experience) you should be able to trust the genuine nature of your own experience, seeing its place ( as compassion ) as part of the stability/equilibrium witnessed in the terrestrial world. ( to "know the words without knowing the music" doesn't make for a good song). to mentally know is fine, to EXPERIENTIALLY KNOW, as to be consistent with what allows you to be genuine/whole, the root of your reality being the root running through all of nature, is to allow for the development of BEING, is to know the creative force of life, to see the place of faith in the human experience, to "KNOW THY SELF". hope this perspective coherently communicated in a way that aids in your understanding of how you are swayed, or entertain self conversations that get in your way, in spite of your interest or sincerity to go beyond your societal context and experiences.

I realize that the feeling or the image I have is more like, " there is nothing left of me without these thoughts in my head". Not in a negative or sad way, it's simply that when I "see" me without thoughts, I am indistinguishable from the clouds. I can't imagine what " so much more" would look like if it does not include thoughts and features of a personality? It just looks like we disappear.
@markfuller
@markfuller Жыл бұрын
I've heard a couple ways of considering this. Apparently, most people when asked "are you the same person you were when 12yo" will say yes. They recognize a part of them that is the same even though they were thinking about other things at 12, hadn't been conditioned and identify with thoughts the way they have over the intervening years. Their story is vastly different now than it was then. Yet, beyond all that, there is some essense of who they are that they recognize as the same person. That would be what to identify with as not being disappeared? Your presence? Another example I heard was to imagine you're zippered into a bag, can't see anything. You would have a very present experience of yourself, without distraction. Then someone pieces a pin hole in that bag, and you can see light. Now you're focused on this light, making sense of it, how it changes, the others who appear to be outside your bag, being more like some of them (less like others), blaming yourself for their reactions (or getting a thrill out of causing reactions). You'd be completely engaged with this miniscule light, and completely lose perception of the rest of yourself in the bag -- the real you. You'd be completely story-driven about that tiny bit of light that makes the bag experience more engaging(?). But, all you would have to do is look away, and suddenly you'd recognize who you are in the bag, the rest of you, the real you without all that "context" with the light. To me, that's similar to the "are you the same person you were when you were 12?" It's a similar experience you can have. You don't disappear when looking away from that source of confabulation. You recognize the you who was always there?

There are moments of presence without thought when new things happen then we label these experiences w words. Gradually we get numb and go into autopilot 🛩👨‍✈️ when we compare daily experiences with those of the past. I find it amusing the stories the ego produces. Most people make a movie like stories similar to books to hero or victim. I catch my self doing this and mind clears for a brief moment.

Atleast i am open enough to change my opinion just like that if someone makes me aware of it. That i love about myself. I can be very thankful for people who are telling me that i was on the wrong way and i do appreciate that. It just makes me feel warm inside of the heart and honest and open ❤

I’ve found Eckharts wisdom and knowledge to be the most useful gateway into freedom from the self. I’m 18 now, and I’ve experienced trouble letting go of attachment to past experiences, due to the unconscious conditioning of the mind. For anyone reading this who feels that they need to discover who they are by attempting to repair the past or become something more than who they are already. This is an illusion ❤ Discovering who you are isn’t found through trying to becoming more than who you are already, but by simply discarding who you are not which is the story. Thanks Eckhart ❤️

I've noticed in recent years how my emotions are felt so much more in my body. I feel I was able to handle the thoughts in my head but it overwhelms my physical body and makes me feel bad.

So wise and so clever.. being in a therapy for more than 2 years to just realise that I don't want to go over, the only way I know is to be stuck into my 'problems' and my identity, the ones I've been repeating to myself over and over again, since my childhood, that I'm alone on the planet and noone loves me. That's sad...

Resolved my deepest fears, given me such joy, such peace or rather has through his words allowed me to see the mind identification. It’s so f’n incredible I want to scream it from the rooftops. Thank you Eckhart love❤you

@1:38 "...you don't know it -- you _are_ it. So, you have to... the vital step...and, *I cannot tell you how to do that.* That minimum of awareness needs to be there where _know_ that 'self-talk is happening in my head' and it's telling you some kind of stories." This bolded part is something that's always stood out to me about Eckhart's teachings. He dwells more in the larger topic of "what it means" (the collective conscious, the tranquility of being present, etc.). But, doesn't explain that _foundation_ of getting there, awakening to the self-talking _homunculus_ in the head. I first watched Eckhart a few years ago after a conversation on a psychology channel where mindfulness was discussed (and becoming aware of that chattering mind). Someone asked if that's what Eckhart talks about. The answer was "yes, but he comes at it as if you already know what he's talking about." I've seen that over and over the past few years. I think the above quote is an example of that. Before I watched Eckhart, I awakened to my "self thinking in the moment" (individuated my "self in the moment" from that) by practicing a guided-mindfulness (on the present moment) video titled _"Guided Mindfulness Meditation on the Present Moment. Be Here Now. MindfulPeace."_ The whole point of that meditation is simply to observe and be aware of thoughts entering the mind, choose not to give them space now, be familiar with what remains without thought. As you become familiar, it's a state you can increasingly get to without formal meditation, ideal circumstances, etc. It can take months of familiarizing. (Basically, you're breaking a lifelong habit of over-thinking, over-defining, over-labeling. It takes practice and familiarity to have a new habit.). I'm always surprised that Eckhart can't point people to something like that (or lead people in that kind of self-observation, practice). It really works.

Well, you can never get a person that doesn't have at least some glimpse of awareness into any kind of meditation. It simply doesn't work, there has to be some basic level of awareness awakening. Or to be more precise, they can do meditation, but they'll get nothing out of it, they'll only interpret it as some kind of philosophy at best. Awareness can't be forced onto someone, but once it starts developing, the development process can be deepened.

@@fortissimoX I agree with you. I awakened through that guided meditation, but I was deeply searching at the time. I'd already recognized something was wrong, I seemed lose my way, recognized I was getting lost in thought, something was taking over and I was gone without knowing it. I spent a year or more snapping my wrist with a rubberband whenever I noticed it happened. (That doesn't work. But, it kept the point alive long enough for me to find the video, and observe myself more that way.). After some time, I was stunned that I never understood meditation. I always thought of it as some passive, "open yourself to something beyond." Whenever I tried meditation in the past, I would spend all that time thinking about what I'd do when the meditation was over. Or, I'd fall asleep. This one that worked for me is more active, participatory. It was strange how I realized "transcendence" meant transcending *my self,* not some esoteric other-worldly experience (even though that is what it feels like). I think that meditation may have worked for me in the past, before recognizing I had a problem. But, I don't know. Its emphasis on observing the mind might have gotten through to me. But, I know how powerful the mind is when it doesn't want to be observed. It will find endless reasons not to be. There takes some kind of crack, along the lines of "I can't keep telling myself this is ok. It may really be nothing like think it is." Some kind of insight like that. The meditation that worked for me had me looking for it. But, I had to see a need to look first.
