This is a walnut wood drawer made using a technique called " 包み蟻組接ぎ - tsutsumi arigumi tsugi " in Japanese.
In English, maybe it's "wrapped dovetail joint"?
* We have changed the title! Thank you everyone!
This video is the making part of the drawer of "ISHITANI - Making a Single Pedestal Solid Wood Desk" uploaded in December 2023.

And we get a good look at the finished piece--not like those videos calling themselves "Amazing" and "Astounding" but are afraid to show the end product.

Great work. I found it interesting how you split the back of the drawer then screwed it back together after inserting the bottom. Also, in English, we call the front joint "half-blind" dovetails. Some have mentioned "blind" dovetails, which are a bit different (the dovetail is fully concealed inside the joint).
@idontthinkso666
@idontthinkso666 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I noted that split-back element too. I can see how it will allow for removal of the drawer bottom in the future, but I am at a loss to explain why? If the bottom is damaged? But why is that a concern?
@JonDunnmusician
@JonDunnmusician 6 ай бұрын
@idontthinkso666 It's got nothing to do with removing the drawer bottom. It's a way of installing the piece with a much more logical function in terms of the creating a sandwich design using vertical slots, & immensely stronger than a slotted single backplate.

I really enjoy your methodology. You take great care selecting the timber, and use machines to enable you to spend the time on hand work without undue stress upon your body, wasting time, or compromising the quality. I like your sensible use of screws ti enable fixing and natural movement. Absolutely beautiful work as always!

A very nice drawer. In English we would generally call the joint a "lapped dovetail" or "half-blind dovetail." "Lapped" comes from old English because we don't really use the word anymore. "Wrapped dovetail" certainly is descriptive.

Paul Sellars made a similar little tub and stuffed in an oiled length of cotton cloth .The top protruded somewhat and he would wipe it across all cutting blades ie. Planes -sawblades etc. No doubt good for the care of blades too apart from easing the cutting surface.
