According to islam hajar and ismael went to arabia when ismael was still baby, and she run through two mountains to find water for her baby and then well of zamzam etc, and ibraham and ismael both build the kabba as place of worship for believers, their group of arabs who are descendants of ismael in arabia and the arab jews also descendants of this branch and prophat mohammed come from that lineage of ismael.

Great video Rabbi however, jihad translates to "struggle" or "strive" as in striving for God or exerting your upmost effort. There are various types of jihads as well such as "jihad of the soul" trying to maintain purity of soul, increase faith, and promote good while denouncing evil, for example. May God guide and bless us all.

So appreciate your teaching especially as it pertains to the microcosm. I had a dream last month. A baby boy lifeless as I'd not fed him all day. I nursed him but then he was stolen from me. I searched all the little boy faces but did not find him. I do believe he was the archetype of Ishmael in me!! I'm nourishing him now..lots of inner child work and maturing as time goes on.

Both Ismail and Ishaque pbuthem are god messengers and are full of discipline and humble. Ismail brought to Arabian peninsula when he was infant and much before the birth of Ishaque pbuh.

Thank you for your words of wisdom. Listening to you gives me good advise. It helps me to find a way back to the peace and security i felt when i was a child. My parents taught me to appreciate the differences as a possibility to learn from each other. No matter how many differences there are there will be always more things that connect all living beings. My family is christian and i grew up as one, but i had a hard time and started to grew more radical when i was a young adult. This caused my believe to crush and me loosing hope. Ending with me searching for something to hold on for nearly two third of my life. Only a few years ago i found the courage to read the bible again and i started to read it more as a philosophical book like i did as a child rather than a book of strict laws like i did as a young adult. But i noticed i need to hear the views of others in order to keep it healthy for me because it is like drinking too much wine on empty stomach if i don't.

A wonderful teaching, Rabbi. I did want to clarify one thing based on what you said about Christianity: Jesus Christ said for us to "Turn the other cheek, when someone strict us." We're supposed to fight people with the Word of G-d and not physically... Therefore any "Christian" who has harmed someone by forcing people to convert or die by a physical sward , is not doing the TRUE will of our Lord Jesus Christ. This teaching on Ismael and Issiac was fantastic . Thank you, for this beautiful teaching.

Rabbi, There's a old Cherokee story that applies to what you say,"a child asks his grandfather which is stronger good or evil, the grandfather replied good and evil are like two dogs, the one that gets stronger is the one you feed." if you feed good it will become stronger.

I taught religion for 20 years in Catholic schools and have tried to convey what you have said in my classes. You have explained it so much better. I stopped at Abraham and blamed him for the conflict for sending Ishmael into the desert but I now understand it was not Abraham's fault for each of us have free will and Ishmael did not have the discipline he needed. Thank you Rabbi. I feel all schools should teach biblical studies so these rabble rousers would understand better.

I listened to your sermon only because I like Rabbi Tovi but you are not him at all! He has something you lack immensely and that is a spine, truthfulness, honour, reliability and I could go on!! Firstly the Muslim world is not Arab ha ha ha ha I mean a secondary school kid knows this!! You see Islam is not based on race it’s based on pure monotheism and righteousness in word and deed!! There are Muslims from every race of the world! Yes the prophet Muhammad عليه السلام is a direct descendant of the Prophet Ismaaeel عليه السلام as is the tribe of Quraish as a whole! So not All Arabs are descendants of Ismaeel عليه السلام although today a large percentage are ! In fact the direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad عليه الصلاة والسلام are in their millions!! As for your claim about the reason for Hajars emigration being because of Ibrahim’s wife Sarah saying what you said then that’s pure lies and slander against Ismaeel عليه السلام because it was God Almighty who ordered Ibrahim عليه السلام to take his son and his mother to Mecca because that was the plan of Allah! Yes it was Sarah’s jealousy that caused it but it was Allahs command. Ibrahim عليه السلام took his family to Mecca and built the house of God the Ka’bah or the mosque or synagogue in your world! Then he returned and built the temple in Jerusalem with his Son Ishaaq! Incidentally the direction of the prayer in the beginning of Islam was Jerusalem! The Prophet Muhammad longed for it to become Mecca but Allah made him wait until the day it was revealed to him whilst leading the prayer to face Mecca and so part of the prayer was towards Jerusalem and the other Mecca hence that mosque is called the mosque of the two prayer directions! You accuse us Muslims and Islam of only accepting all out war with others!! This is either extreme ignorance on your part or a big fat lie and you know it!! The Jews of Madinah became equal citizens in Arabia as per the constitution of Madinah! THEY WERE EQUAL CITIZENS AND DID NOT PAY ANY TRIBUTE!! The tribute or Jizya is only taken from those who have attacked the Muslims militarily! It’s a punishment for them and a demonstration of submission to the laws of the land which gives them citizenship rights and pension rights rights NEVER IMAGINED BEFORE THIS TIME OR AFTER FOR 1300 years! And so your claims of intolerance are just lies! The Prophet عليه السلام thought that at the very least the Jews would give him some support but the showed on treachery! Attempted assassinations and acts of treason that killed many Muslims!! After this treacherous behaviour Allah ordered that they must pay tribute if the want to live in the Muslim world! And live in the Muslim world is exactly what they did! Infact your Jewish golden age took place is Muslim Spain where Jews reached the top in politics and ministerial positions as well as Jewish scholarship as a whole! You see for Huroof years the Jews lived protected by the ones you claim wanted to harm them!! It was the Christians who butchered the Jews and the Jews left Spain to live in Morocco with the Muslims!! What’s more is the second Caliph of Islam Umar bin Khattab رضي الله عنه when he conquered Syria and Palestine WITHOUT ANY FIGHTING OR BLOODSHED because the Christians invited him in. He saw there were no Jews in Jerusalem and the holy land and so he TRANSPORTED THOUSANDS OF JEWS TO RESETTLE IN THE REGION AFTER THE CHRISTIANS HAD BANNISHED THEM!! Now you are waffling on about the Abraham accords and all of that but let me just say this! There can’t be any peace until you stop lying and come to the table seeking only truth, justice and fairness! The jews were living in Palestine for 1400 years next to their Arab Christians and Muslims and Samaritans in peace and harmony until Zionism brought terror and treachery to the holy land!! There are Orthodox Jews in Israel who stand with the Palestinians! By Allah if they were to enter Ghazza with their full orthodox clothing on you would see Hamas hug and embrace them along with the whole of Ghaza! We Muslims are not all Arabs and we do not hate jews! We just find it very hard to trust you because you’ve stabbed us so many times in the back! I think it's great that we're talking about these things. But I think like you said that this problem is deeper than we even understand because it is on a spiritual level and that is that the non Jews have not been accepted by the Jew in a positive way. We are viewed as being bad. And unfortunately that unacceptance has translated as hate. We are spiritual beings and our thoughts translate to the other. We all need to become love and see the love because love is the true Jew. We are one another. ❤️

Rabi, when you say Ishmael was very passionate in following religion, what religion was that ? How do we call that religion? That religion is the religion of Abraham , the religion of Monotheism. In Arabic it is called Islam.

Dear professor Simon, thank you for sharing your thought and insight by giving an allegorical image and the metaphysical significance of the two presences within ourselves, brilliant. However I wanted to open a breech toward the Islamic point of view, better said a Quranic point of view of what Jacob and what is Ishmael by beginning to say that they're are all servants of God, very high and estimated servants from which God has made an eternal alliance. In the Quran, it is clearly explained for example that not everything can be taken allegorically and that at some point you must practice what it has been revealed or else we can be tempted to reduce religion to a metaphorical symbolism and therefore the rites and the cult will follow into the sphere of the obsolete, while, is it through them we may obtain sage, Wisdom, faith, strength, and salvation. This is a structural pillar. Blessed be intelligence and exegesis of text under the esoterical and mystical point of view, but woe to those who reduce everything to its own interpretation; In Jeremiah 17; 5-8 we are well warned of these effects. Yes, everything proceeds from God, but how easily we mix up ourselves, the I, with HIM. Thank you kindly for your video and again your thoughtful insights.

When one remembers that the first murder happened by one brother against his own..it exposes that the heart is exceedingly wicked. I can relate to it all. I’ve been the black sheep of my entire family for as long as I’ve been alive. It doesn’t mean they’re wrong and I’m right or vice versa. But I do see that we’re two extremes and it’s all about learning how to maintain balance. It’s the hardest thing to do and as long as no one is willing to do what’s necessary to create balance of all things, unfortunately not much will change.

I appreciate the fact the Rabbi saying that Ishmael was the first born son from wife Hajar. Then later miraculously, Sara at an old age gave birth to Isaac. It makes sense.

Why didn't he mention that When God made the promise to Abraham and Sarah that they would have a child who would inherit God's promise to Abraham , God meant a child Fathered by Abraham through Sarah , who is Isaac . God also gave Ishmael protection because he was of the blood and flesh of Abraham , but God's promise to Abraham is through Isaac .

The thing is, while it is true that the struggle to find balance between permissiveness and restrictiveness has long existed in both macro and micro levels, there is a third dynamic complication thrown into the mix and this is Satan's diabolic interference in all the players, all of us and I can't imagine coping with our complexities without our faith in our Almighty. I am grateful to be Catholic as we have our Blessed Virgin Mother who also helps thwart demonic influences, the Mother of God whom Satan fears most.

Thank you Rabbi for your lucid explanation. Here I must add- there is some step- motherly treatment to Hager and Ishmael as Hager was a maid of Sara. Naturally the background of Sara and Isaac being the first wife of Abraham, makes the all the difference. Part of this aggression comes for the fact that both Hager and Ishmael were abandoned or banished to an unknown land. At the end of the day both are nation builder and laid the foundation for great religions. Thank you

A friend once told me, about the conflict in Israel, "They're two brothers fighting." That stuck with me. Some twenty years later, it's still true. As a Christian, I believe there will not be peace in Jerusalem until Jesus returns, but I still pray for it. Thank you for your explanations. I always wondered who the descendants of Esau became. Not many talk about either set of brothers in the Christian church, from a historical point of view. At least, not that I've ever heard. It makes me sad. Allah the Almighty declared in the Glorious Quran: And who turns away from the religion of Abraham (Islamic Monotheism) except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. When his Lord said to him: "Submit (be a Muslim)!" He said: "I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)." And this (submission to Allah, Islam) was enjoined by Abraham upon his sons and by Jacob, (saying): "O my sons! Allah has chosen for you the true religion, then die not except in the Faith of Islam (as Muslims -- Islamic Monotheism)." Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob? When he said unto his sons: "What will you worship after me?" They said: "We shall worship you (Ilah (God - Allah) the Ilah (God) of your fathers, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, One Ilah (God), and to Him we submit (in Islam)." That was a nation who had passed away. They shall receive the reward of what they earned and you of what you earn. And you will not be asked of what they used to do. They say: "Be Jews or Christians, and then you will be guided." Say (to them O Muhammad): "Nay (we follow) only the religion of Abraham, Hanifan (Islamic monotheism, i.e. to worship none but Allah Alone, and he was not of the Al Mushrikeen (those who worshipped others along with Allah)." Say (O Muslims): "We believe in Allah and that which has been sent down to us and that which had been sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and to Al Asbat (the twelve sons of Jacob), and that which has been given to Moses and Jesus and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted (in Islam)." So if they believe in the like of that which you believe, then they are rightly guided, but if they turn away, then they are only in opposition. So, Allah, will suffice you against them. He is the All Hearer, the All Knower. (Our Sibghah, religion is) the Sibghah (religion) of Allah (Islam) and which Sibghah (religion) can be better than Allah's. We are His worshippers.

About those two towers on 9/11 I had a dream when i was a little girl. The night of the 9/11 day I had a dream that I grabbed a wooden head of Jesus and said let’s go. I was holding that wooden head that I found in the field and was running as fast as I could. I was running to the funerals that I saw from the far passing by them. Oh, then during the day at 9 am my dream was explained when the news broke on. I’m not the only one that had a dream that night, as I heard many people did. God was warning all of us.

Ishmael grew up to be a wild man and mass murderer. Sarah was wise to express her wishes to Abraham to separate Issac from Ishmael. God provided for Ishmael and Hagar. Thank you Rabbi , you explained perfectly. God knew what was needed.

Hello Rabi. Although as a child I was not exposed to any sort of religion since I came from a broken family; I, nevertheless, have always been fascinated by the Bible. As a child I read about Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Isaac, and Ishmael and thus have equated that story with the basic Middle East hostilities. Because Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael into the desert where they ran out of water, it seemed to me that act was equivalent to a death sentence for Hagar and Ishmael, and that was the true source of an ensuing hatred that has never been assuaged, even after 3800 years. The harsh reality is that one child is revered and the other is banished to die in the dessert. The "chosen child" that has evolved into the "chosen race" remains the point of contention to this day. Perhaps it would be helpful to address this age-old conflict from a psychological standpoint now that we have the Jungian viewpoint from which to consider the unconscious aspects of this psychic wound.

But the good qualities of Ismael could have benefited Isaac. Sara and Ibrahim were wise believers. I think it wasn't because of a conflict or a possible bad influence on Isaac. I think it was simply a plan decided by the creator to separate them so that they can both found their nations.

What balance/boundaries and discipline did Jacob's sons (Isaac's side) have when they threw their brother (Joseph) and left him for dead? On top of that, they lied to their father saying that he had been eaten by a wolf. Could you explain the discipline there?

As a none practicing muslim who is fascinated by our relationship with our creator and how he selected his people. The covenant Jews made with Allah is essentially for Jews to always serve Allah, they are like monks who should only dedicate themselves to Allah and noting more. Muslims on the other hand are to bring mankind to Allah, to expand and spread his message. We have different missions.

The main problem is that the younger brother always turns out to be better and god prefers and values ​​him more because of their deeds. And the older brother hates the younger one out of envy because he thinks that god loves him more, which is unfair from his perspective, and he doesn't see that his actions are wrong and that's why god "loves him less".

9/11/01 Was my 40th birthday. Islam says, life begins at 40. After 9/11, I read the Quran and found it VERY insightful, though presented in a much different way.

Whenever I read the story of Ismael and Isaacs my heart saddens - to my common knowledge/ intellect as a christian -Ismael and his mother Hagar was ill treated and chased/sent away by his father Abraham and stepmother Sarah -why didn't Abraham fix the trouble/ conflict Sarah had with Hager and Ismael - a child need both parents especially when in prime time -ended up wondering in the desert

If there is any hatred in any thoughts or religions, GOD must be a Billion light years away from that.

One of the most enlightening discussions that brings to the fore the inner and the outer conflict of two opposing drives---be it the ego vs. the G-dly soul or Ishmael vs.Yitzchak or chesed vs. gevurah or left vs. right. I loved the way you harmonized the two into tiferet (ie, Yaakov Avinu) so as not to malign either side but rather in order to reach a kind of synthesis----harmony and beauty. Lasting peace can only come with Dialogue, one can respect each other. You practice your religion and I do so with my Religion. We all have to choose good over Evil! Corruption and mischief must stop! I feel for the New generation ! We are all inter twined! God guide us all to the rightful path!

I don't get it. How old was Ishmael when Isaac was born ? I read that Ismael was about 12 years older than his brother Isaac. So how could there Bea conflict between the two. Furthermore, if Ishmael and his mother were sent away when Isaac was still a little lad, how could there be a clash of personalities between the two brothers? Can you also expound on what your sources are ? Did that clash happen later when they where grown men ? Also why did the romans destroy the temple if they are descendants of Abraham. Is this prophesied that descendants of Esau would be romans who will destroy the temple ?
