when the sink is on the upper floors, when installing the foot vent, it is a challenge to stack the vertical comby on the the horizontal comby. because floor joist are usually 12". I was allowed to use a san tee by AHJ after he saw the issue. That was on a big custom home in Manhattan Beach ,Ca. By the way, your videos are great. I especially enjoy the drawings at the beginning. i bought the isometric stencil after I saw your water sizing video. I am also a plumbing instructor for the UA Local 78 apprentice program. The last two semesters were a challenge teaching on Zoom.

Because of Zoom, I was able to readjust my thinking- which is always a great opportunity for an instructor. I also created this page initially to compensate for not being able to teach in class. A bit boring in the first videos, but after acquiring some stuff it became fun. Getting better as time goes by. I ran into a similar situation on a custom build in Ocean Beach Ca, but I used a wye tying the vertical into the branch side and the foot vent out the upstream side. Then using another wye to tie into the horizontal. Tight fit, but it worked.

Good day sir. Thank you for the time and effort you put in this video (as well as responding to all the posts!) My question, how would you do this same setup, but also include a dishwasher drain? Thank you!
@BGsPlumbingClass10 ай бұрын
The dishwasher drain will attach to the tailpiece of the sink or the dishwasher connection on the inlet side of the disposal. It shouldn't have a bearing on the island vent set up. Thank you for the kind words.

Sir, I am working on a completely home remodeling job now, I am a GC, I did a lot of new construction and home remodeling jobs, instead of sub my jobs, I do a lot of trades by myself, but the most complicate part to me is the Plumbing, I can framing a 1,800 house within 1 or 2 weeks, but it's a pain in my ass to plumb it. Normally I have to sub all my plumbing jobs. Your videos are very straight forwards to the key points, they are really helped. I checked your channel, you don't even have any community or channel. I purchased lot of other plumbing channel's memberships, but compares with yours, they are jokes, you are a real master plumber. Hope you can see my comment and contact me, and wish you have a nice weekend.

You aren't the only one to say that to me. I was shocked at first thinking that there had to be other channels like this. You really have to search. As far as purchasing the channel? Why would a plumber with the knowledge to share charge for it? I may develop some live lectures at a cost someday for those needing assistance in preparing for their journey level exams, not sure. Thank you again for the kind words.

Super helpful video! Is there a maximum length for the foot vent portion/drain? Between the combo and the 90?
@BGsPlumbingClass2 жыл бұрын
The length of the horizontal vent is limited to section 904.2 which states that the horizontal length is limited to 1/3 the allowable vent distance stated in Table 703.2, however if you increase the vent one pipe size then you don't have a limitation of length. This applies to the foot vent as well.

I'm sure glad I located your video. Thanks for the great explanation, pics, and drawings. Once the 2" vent pipe goes up the wall and is past the height of the island counter (6"+) can I convert to a 1 1/2" vent pipe to go out and through the roof? Or, do I need to maintain the 2" vent pipe all of the way through? Thx
@BGsPlumbingClass Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay in the response. The truth of the code section is that the vent size shall be according to code requirements from chapter 7, which says the whole vent assembly can be 1 1/2". As a consideration for service, 2" on the vent "drainage" side is advisable. After that, downsizing the vent is no different than if you were to transition from drain to vent in a conventional sanitary tee situation.

Great video, thanks! I'm prepping for a home remodel in San Diego where i'm pushing out the kitchen wall where the drain line and vent sit. Goal is to utilize the existing sink drain line for an island sink by venting to an adjacent interior wall through the roof. Question: how deep below grade does the foot vent need to be? Does that trench need to be a certain distance from the hot and cold water feeds to the island? Thanks again!
@BGsPlumbingClass Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! To answer your questions (simply), the depth of your drain only need be as deep as required to accommodate the slopes and fittings if installed inside. If you are inside and using materials deemed approved for use indoors, then the hot, cold, and drain lines can use the same trench. Whereabouts in San Diego? I moved away from there about a year and a half ago.

@@BGsPlumbingClass Thanks for such a quick response! For sure, voice-over with your illustration made the video click. I'm in Clairemont...busy, but great central location, and not far from some good surf! i think i'm going to have lots of questions on this project; mind if i send you some progress pics and questions as i muscle through it? or, do you have any good references in San Diego? So why does the UPC say to use a Wye for the vertical connection to the vent side of the loop instead of a sani-T? I normally see sani-Ts in diagrams for a loop vent. Since it's a vent, that would be against code anywhere else. Is it only because of the clean-out in the actual vent wall so that the snake is directed down to where the clog would be? Thanks.
@BGsPlumbingClass Жыл бұрын
The biggest reason for using a wye type fitting or combination fitting is because technically it is still considered a drain. If it were to backup and snaking were required, this type of fitting radius would be optimal. Great question!

We want to move our island and we have that arch with big pipes . Can I replace that whole thing with an AAV? Cap off the vent tubes?
@BGsPlumbingClass Жыл бұрын
It depends on your location. AAVs are not allowed in some municipalities. Where are you located? If you wish you can email me at gorhambm@outlook.com for further info.

does the foot vent on island sink need to be 2 inch
@BGsPlumbingClass2 жыл бұрын
The quick answer is no. 909.1 has a sentence in there that states "Pipe sizing shall be as elsewhere required in this code." This means that the sizing parameters in Chapter 7 (table 703.2) shall be utilized. Apologies for the late response.

Can the vent be a wet vent? can it catch a floor drain on its way to the wall where the cleanout goes? Or can you oversize the island sink drain to 3", a combination vent/drain?What would you recommend when running an island sink and a floor drain 4 feet from the island sink and the closest wall 9 feet away from the island sink. The floor drain being in-between the wall and the island at about 5 feet from the wall. Thank you sir for your time. God bless

Is there any way to maximize the trap arm length of the floor drain and then roll the vent to above the flow line, then flat vent it to the wall?
@jackalbatross94865 ай бұрын
@@BGsPlumbingClass so the vent that's off of the main drain line will be rolled up as much as it can be, but then you're saying also roll up the dry vent portion after it catches the floor drain too, correct? And maximize the floor drain trap arm to prevent the trap from siphoning dry?again thank you for your time.

Clean out required an all sinks?
@BGsPlumbingClass Жыл бұрын
If you look into Chapter 7 it will explain the required clean out locations. Once you go above the floor with the building drain, you'll see that a clean out is no longer required. Also, if you are within 5' of the main. Technically there is only one fixture that requires a clean out regardless of location- the urinal. Now, it would be a great idea to install a cleanout on all sinks. Also please check with the authority having jurisdiction in your area- they may want one.
