What happens when your brain is deprived of stimulation? What effect does being cut off from interaction with the outside world have on a person? What effect does it have on me, when I am locked in a windowless, soundproof isolation chamber for three days? In this episode of Mind Field, I take both an objective and a very intimate look at Isolation.

I was ready and willing to throw down a couple dollars to see other episodes on youtube red since I love VSauce and the exploratory analyses that Michael Stevens does, but after watching the first episode, I just can't. It was full of so much of the BS that makes me loathe reality TV - dramatic shaky cam, cutting to reflectionary 'interviews', a doctor wearing a white lab coat and stethoscope to remind mouth breathers he's a doctor (despite dressing like an actor pretending to be a doctor), the camera zooming in and framing peoples' reactions to otherwise innocuous statements to create the facade of drama, a B-List celebrity (not to imply an A-Lister would be any less repulsive in an otherwise educational video), a red, spinning warning light outside the test chamber to add tension that really contributes nothing but aesthetic value, just to name a few things off the top of my head. These are trademarks of reality TV that I've grown accustom to spotting steering far clear of, though I'm sure they're appealing to many people, otherwise they wouldn't be used ad nauseam. I would pay for the standard VSauce videos to continue before I would pay to promote dumbing down and mass market appeal the way this new series looks like it's heading.

My biggest toxic trait is thinking I'd be able to get through this with my adhd alone💀

I'm curious as to what he 'dreamt' that made him open the door.

The camera gives him an outlet for companionship, so it's not really complete isolation.

William: “I spent years, sometimes months on end, in this little room with no external stimuli, only food slipped through a slot in the door and my own thoughts. It is, quite literally, mentally scarring.”

There's 2 things that actually make it easier for him 1. He knows if he gets too crazy he gets released. 2. He knows he's being watched, he still has a camera to interact with.

When Michael says “good morning” and he’s only slept for like an hour and a half... actually weirdly disturbing.

I worked as a prison guard in a solitary confinement area. The other guards really just stayed in their central area. I would actually get out and go by each cell and talk to everyone for a bit. Let them know what all was happening in the world, what time it was, what was going on in the world, etc.

The last several minutes of Michael's time in the room were literally identical to depression;
