Isopod Colonies Are More Fun Than You'd Think - (Homemade Porcellio scaber terrarium)

In this video I show you how to make a terrarium for an isopod colony and also how much fun and how interesting it is to have an isopod colony yourselves.

I probably found out their favourite food. While resting from the sun after doing some gardening , I sat down on the grass, fiddling with my hands crushing some fallen flowers around me, a minute later I turned my head down and notice a bunch of "isopods" swarming the flowers I crushed (completely ignoring the regular flowers), so I did the same for other groups of "isopods" I found across the garden just to see them swarm stuff. Needless to say it was a productive day.

I own everything from snakes, frogs, lizards, to a variety of insects, but my favorite pets have to be the 25 or so different species of isopods I breed. These little cuties are so fun to watch. You wouldn't believe how much personality they have. My dairy cows are a hoot.

My child and I really enjoyed this video that you have created! She is 9 and is a PILL BUG fanatic. She's made 3 different terrariums for them! She gave them watermelon , cucumber, carrots , apple , potatoes and FRENCH FRY (lol) and out of all of them they seem to like the watermelon, cucumber and carrots best! I’ve learned more about isopods in this video than all the years of playing with them. They were always a cool thing to have and play with as a kid. As an adult, I’ll still pick one up every once in awhile, and set it in my garden. Thanks for the informative video!

My isopods started reproducing in a small glass terrarium with just some gardening soil, sage leaves, carrots and cucumber. They love carrots, so did the snails and bugs I kept with them. The young ones hide in the cucumber once it starts to rot. I let them all free again and now im starting a new colony. Also for the first time I noticed an isopod with its offspring under their belly. Cute and fascinating.

I had a colony once, I used the newly hatched babies as a treat for my fish. I had a food mix for them that they loved, it was very open to mold which they enjoy. And ofcourse I had water tubes hidden in rocks for them.

My son had one of those gelatin ant farms and he put roly-poly‘s in it and pretty much ended up in his toybox about a year later we pulled it out and they had developed different shaped bodies and we’re still eating and surviving and we’re very pale

It would be interesting to work this into everyday conversation on a regular basis, everytime you would say 'Every one knows' say; 'As all humans know, and I say this as a human' and just see people's reaction

For your substrate, add in sphagnum moss damp but not dripping wet, as well as Catappa leaves (Indian almond leaves), alder cones, plus some twigs and sticks, or bark and even palm bark pieces are good food for them. You can also add in some crushed eggshell for calcium for their exoskeletons.

My jar is literally filled with parasites floating around in circles, on the top of the water inside the jar is a thicc brown layer of bacteria. Underneath is a yellowish water with a few plants that are slowly withering and they are covered in something that resemble dust. But it doesn't dust underwater right? I call it a post-apocalyptic ecosphere, and my mom wont allow it in our kitchen anymore.

My friend put _leaves_ into his. And when the water turned brown and he got bored, he gave it to me. Being the very random person I am I proceeded to put 100 mils of kombucha solution I got from an aunt in it. *_it worked_*

I also have a sowbug colony. It was supposed to be a vivarium but it's become a sowbug colony with a few snails and worms in it. There are also a few pill bugs in it. They're all very cute.

I used to keep isopods years ago and want to give you some advice; The baby isopods WILL be able to crawl through those little ventilation holes. They will breed all year round as long as it is warm. I suggest putting some metal or non-organic fine mesh over the vents with a circle of hot glue or some other glue, caulk or silicone. (i'd go for a builder's caulk!) the babies start as small as a full stop. They prefer rotting wood and leaves to potato :) although I found they LOVE carrots. Also I think one of those woodlice may not be porcellio scaber, looks like oniscus asellus, but i didn't get a close enough look to be certain. P.S. I had an albino woodlouse for a while, it was definitely not a baby or white species, it was a pure white porcellio scaber! Good luck with your colony, this is fantastic to see and I really really look forward to seeing how this progresses, love your videos, keep up the good work! :D

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like you had fun with them. They don't seem to be able to crawl up on the plastic. One's definitely a little different, I've noticed that one a few times. It might be Oniscus asellus, I'm not sure either.
