In this video I will be growing triops (tadpole shrimp) from eggs. Specifically the species Triops longicaudatus. In this video you will see the hatching setup and aquarium, you will see the young triops, you will see it grow and eventually it will die. Of course I will also show you some beautiful macro and slow motion shots of the triops.
Enjoy!

I had some of these when I was younger. Once they died I would collect their eggs from the sand, dry them out, and re-hydrate them to hatch them. I did this for 2 or 3 generations.

@@MMGJ10 the eggs have to be dried and then rehydrated again. If you have triops that had access to sand, after they die you can dry out the sand and rehydrate them afterwards, just leave the sand in direct sunlight for about a week or more. I had up to 20 triops at one point because of this.

I can't remember what tank they were in. I remember buying them off a magazine offer and they came with two different types of food pellets: one bag with green pellets and one bag with brown pellets. They both outlived the food pellets, so during the remainder if their lives, I fed them one of the things the instructions recommended: tiny bits of carrots. That's about the most I remember.

@@Flashlight237 had recently some. 1 went in 2 weeks to 8cm. It died at 3 weeks. And a second that was alot smaller maybe half the size it lived 2 more weeks. I tell you after it dried out I had this gigantic dried triops corpse in there. I moved the smaller one out at some point due to me being scared of it dying. You know cause the big one died and it was a gigantic corpse in the water.

Triops are awesome. I did a research paper on them back when I was in college for an independent study. Depending on how these Triops were sourced, there could very well be all sorts of different crustacean eggs in the mix. I've seen them in pools with clam shrimp, seed shrimp, fairy shrimp, and probably about a dozen other species. Dr. David Cowley has some really interesting work published on them. He was my advisor at NMSU, and I got to volunteer in his Triops grow out lab throughout my time at the college. It was pretty fun. I still hydrate soil from time to time to watch the Triops do their thing.

When my family got a triop kit the triops hatched and immediately began eating each other over and over until there was only one left and it grew super huge. Then it chewed open the little bag that held the food, it polluted the water and it died. I thought this was a beautiful allegory of humanity but my little sister got really freaked out by it.

Nice video. I raised these once for fun- I was really amazed with them. From my clutch I had 5 babies, 3 of which grew to adulthood. What really got me was how aggressive they were. I think the fairy shrimp was there as a food source because I used to feed them to my triops. The triops would grab the shrimp and shuck them like Maine lobster. Fascinating little critters.

This video is both informative and helpful. My sister got me the Smithsonian triops kit for my birthday a few years ago, and I haven't yet used it because I am not emotionally equipped to handle their impending deaths. Also, I am not prepared to hold the responsibility of the power of life and death, even over such small organisms. I have foisted the triops kit onto a friend I believe is better prepared to care for them. He has not yet used the kit.

We normally had 3-5 make it to the young adult stage when I was a kid, and the fewest was 2. If we had included sand for them to nest in, we usually got 1 or 2 hatchlings as a second generation. Looking at the rest of your content though, I wonder what kinds of stuff we might have been able to sustain with some water plants, and better knowhow.

There was a lot less water flea and fairy shrimp in this tripod bowel then I’m used to seeing. These animals have to grow fast because they live within the puddles created by monsoons in the South Western United States. Those puddles dry up very fast. Something that is missed in this vid is the lifespan of the water fleas and fairy shrimp, they all get really big fast and die at the same time. Or at least within days of each other.

I raised some of those when I was a kid. I remember both times I did, there were a ton of water fleas and fairy shrimp. I don’t remember how I did it, but everything in the bowel got really big, including the water fleas. I also didn’t have to feed them very often, the shrimp ate the fleas and the tripod ate the shrimp.

I found out the other day while watching the YT channel journey to the microcosmos that daphnia can grow their shells into different shapes dpending on what types of predators live in their environment Somehow the daphnia sense chemical markers from the predators, and alter theur shells to help defend themselves.

Make a triops ecosphere.
@fudgeweasel
@fudgeweasel 4 жыл бұрын
Triops eggs need to completely dehydrate (and, preferably, freeze) before they are viable to hatch - and, even then, will only hatch in water with a very low bio-load. So, sadly, a Triops ecosphere will only work for exactly one generation - about 8 weeks. You could, of course, then dry it all out for a few months, and re hydrate it, but that's not exactly a sealed ecosphere, is it? :)

@@fudgeweasel That's such a crazy reproduction cycle, the freezing part that is.
@fudgeweasel

@@orestesbastos Triops are fascinating, and their eggs are basically 'programmed' to ensure racial survival: so, if they dry out, and then re-hydrate, some of them will hatch - but not all. Some of them will not hatch until they have dried and re-hydrated 2 or more times; some won't hatch unless they have been dry for a certain amount of time; some won't hatch until they reach higher heat levels than others, or won't hatch if the heat is too high; and some won't hatch unless they have reached low enough temperatures before re-hydration. Some have a combination of these rules :P Basically, freezing allows for more viable, ready-to-hatch eggs when you re-hydrate them, since the eggs which are 'programmed' to wait out the winter before hatching, regardless of how many times they are hydrated, will be tricked in to thinking they experienced winter. I could bore everyone to tears with huge threads about these awesome girls, but I'll avoid the temptation, and stop there :D

After watching it eat I can now understand the extreme amount of food it consumes. And clearly it's only taking tiny particles of food off each larger item. So it's incredibly efficient with it's "factory processing plant" system of eating.

I remember I got a little box of eggs from the science museum and only one of them survived all the way until adulthood so I put it in a fish tank with all my other fish and it lived for a pretty long time all things considered.

Hey I love your videoes. I had a question would you ever consider do a bug terrarium with extra oxygen so you could see how much bigger they would get. I know because of the way insects breath limits there size and if they look in the Fossil record it shows when there was more oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere the bugs were bigger.
