In South africa in the '90s the isuzu ute (bakkie) was the most popular, had the 4JA1 2.5L non turbo and more commonly, the 4JB1T 2.8L turbo. I had the 4JA1 version, bought as scrap basically, stripped the whole thing down to nothing and re built it. I love that engine! Never needed glowplugs, went really well, consumption was 7L /100km no matter what you did with it. Once towed a station wagon 300km up into the mountains with 15 people in it. The 4JA1 was the more poplar one, much after market development was done, there were intercooler kits, etc, to take power to well over 100kw. Gearboxes were weak, there were conversion kits to use Toyota Cressida gearboxes, lasted much better. there may still be kits available for this, but not sure that you will be able to fit the box!

I also believe that there was also a turbo charged version 2.5 l 4JA1 engine in some of the KB models before the end of production, just before the D-Max KB models came out. I haven't come across stuff like that here but I know they are out there elsewhere , thanks to KZfaq. If you like I can share some videos of that engine that I've come across.

What I want to know is what model of truck did that engine come out of? Is it from one of the box/delivery trucks? What transmission does that mate up to?

This 2.8L engine was in the Isuzu elf, Isuzu trooper, Isuzu MU, and a lot of Isuzu's vehicles in the 90s. It's also very popular in industrial Machinery, water pumps, boats, etc. The more popular smaller brother of this engine is the 2.5L 4ja1

those engines weren't offered in the US or they were very limited I know a guy who imported one and has it in his 1st gen. trooper and it's a very nice conversion from the gremlin of the 2.6

I have 1997. ISUZU 2 WEEL. DOUBLE CAB. 4 j A 1 can you find me a good gearbox (2 weel drive ) ? AND SEND IT TO. SRI LANKA... THANK YOU!!!!!!
