Something the book makes clear that the films really didn't drive home hard enough was that the entire town was full of shitty people because of Pennywise's presence. The reason everyone sucks and are abusive assholes is because he has tainted the town and amplifies all of the bad in people.
@pencilnecked1579
@pencilnecked1579 Жыл бұрын
The book's ending is much better. Basically much of the downtown area of Derry collapses into the earth and a lot of the area gets landslided away due to a massive storm that pops up over Derry as the adult Loser's Club confronts and kills IT. This happens because IT essentially IS the town.

I would have loved to have seen that too. Studio probably would not give them the budget for it though. Sadly.

+pencil necked IT being the town is a terrifying thought, but it makes so much sense!! Somebody once likened the form of Pennywise to a colorful lure at the end of a much larger, carnivorous fish. In this case, the "fish" would be Derry itself.

I love the books development of the creatures personality too that I wish this film delved into more. Some hilarious lines from that thing 😂 Tim Curry captured its hysterical essence better but I still like Skarrsgard (sp?) version.

The problem is, the book can delve into things and give details with words that you just cannot reproduce in a movie. I thought the movies could have at least done the ritual of Chud correctly, instead of just hurling insults at It. I'm hoping the HBO series "Welcome to Derry" will cover some things from the book that the movie didn't. But even if they do, the book will ALWAYS be scarier because words act as paint, and your imagination is the canvas. Each of us will imagine things a bit differently while reading the book, but while watching a movie, the painting is done for you.
@Foutainoflife1
@Foutainoflife1 Жыл бұрын
I agree with your opinion that the first IT is scarier. I think there are two main reasons why. First is due to the fact that you are dealing with the unknown and don't know what to expect or just how dark it will be. The second reason is because you're dealing with the situation from a child's point of view. You may be an adult watching a movie but you are seeing everything unfold knowing that there are limitations when it comes to how a child can protect themselves. This is a recognizable feeling derived from the helpless moments everyone faces during their own childhood and invokes a deeper sense of fear. That, IMO, makes it more impactful.

Brandy Sexton: That's true. But, it feels like there's something else to this. Chapter 2 is simply missing something Simple. Even in the TV series version with Tim Curry, the second part with the adults isn't as interesting, scary, or... what's the word? Fun. For example, "I dreamt of you. I craved you. I Missed You." This part was So well done in the trailer, but lost it's sting in the final cut. The entire movie was like this -- things that woulda, Coulda, shoulda been scary, dark, and unnerving. All we got were a few creepy scenes, vomiting shots worthy of Stand By Me, and something that was below the standards set by Chapter 1. It was disappointing for me, though many people did like it quite a bit

Adrian's death at the beginning was based on the actual 1984 assault and murder of Charlie Howard in Bangor, Maine. I have trouble watching it but I'm glad it was included in this version of the story, both so that Charlie's death won't be forgotten, and to remind people that bashings are still a very real fear for many. That point is made more fully in the book, showing that the killing and the cruel reaction by Derry's citizens are augmented by the evil below the town.

Poor Richie. I mean, poor Eddie too, yeah. But Imagine the heartache of watching the guy you've been secretly in love with since you were kids, getting killed like that, while he's hovering that close over you, and you almost thought you were gonna hug. It was never mentioned in the book, whether or not Richie was gay, but he did always tease Eddie about being cute, and picked on him more than on the others. And when Eddie died in the book, he kissed him on the cheek.

Pennywise wasn't angry and vengeful enough for the scene when he talks about waiting so long to get back at them all...only to be defeated in the Exact Same Way. Good grief, I never bother with the second part/Chapter 2 anymore

I think it's heavily implied that Richie (and probably vice versa) was in love with Eddie. I think part of forgetting about Derry was also forgetting about how they felt about each other. Maybe they weren't gay but at the very least had feelings for each other. So sad when Eddie dies.

Y’all, Stephen King has an amazing imagination and is an absolute genius but he was also on A TON of drugs and alcohol when he wrote his most iconic books. So much so that he doesn’t remember writing Cujo, he was drunk when he gave his mom’s eulogy, and he had to have an intervention surrounded by what he was using. It really makes sense that this is the kind of stuff he saw.

As far as what happens in the book, Stephen King openly admits he wrote it while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Said he doesn't even remember writing Cujo. He got sober in the late 80s.

Exactly. If you look at his books chronologically you can tell where he was in the throes of addiction, deciding to get sober, and the fight to stay that way. (The Shining/Doctor Sleep, Christine, Tommyknockers, etc) Then his flood of books addressing his existential crisis and facing death after his near-fatal accident.

This movie was comedy gold. Old lady just running around and flailing her arms about naked in the background. Even her appearance after she transforms just looks... kinda funny. A lot of the dialogue and situations are just straight up comedic. I'm not even sure if it's SUPPOSED to be a horror? Judging from the way it's written. Like the opening when everyone is being called to come back to Derry has some strong serious tones but... I was really just confused for the entire movie.

I love this movie, and I think this was a PERFECT portrayal of the Losers as adults. Their chemistry was lovely! But man, that final battle really was a let down. XD Sure, I loved the horrifying visions that Pennywise gave them, and the visual of a transformed Pennywise with his Deadlights in action... But the roast session that wound up defeating him was more juvenile than watching the kids physically beat his ass in the first Chapter. Still, I cried at the end when the the surviving Losers lived happily ever after. That quote at the end still gets me good.

Don’t worry; not being as scared by part 2 is kind of the point. It, being an ancient entity older than and from outside of our universe, can’t really learn against It’s nature. It tried the same scare tactics on the Losers that it did when they were kids, not understanding that kids grow up and stop being as afraid of things that scared them when they were young. You were right toward the end; they weren’t scared of Pennywise anymore, Spider Clown or no Spider Clown. And that’s kind of how it is for the audiences too. Here we go again; same scares, same tactics. A few can still startle you, but it’s not sheer terror anymore. And that’s why It lost. It’s Pennywise form and all the other forms just couldn’t scare rational, logical adults who deal with real world problems like taxes and relationships, anymore. That’s why they managed to kill It, and why the movie is more about enjoying the friends seeing each other again after a long absence than being scared.

Between this version of "It" movie and the older Version, i'd say i prefer the older version ending better because they leave you with the unknown feeling at the end where you not know for certain if "IT" will remain gone forever or not, which gives that feeling they might make a third movie if they wanted or not.
