The Whaler's Indulgence
In a small fishing village in Finland, there lived a seasoned whaler named Oskar. He was known to be one of the best in his trade, but he had an unusual vice. Despite earning modest wages, Oskar had a penchant for buying expensive American cigarettes. The village folk would often whisper about this eccentricity, wondering why he would spend so much on such a luxury.
One day, a young reporter named Tim, who had the demeanor of a modern, effeminate millennial, decided to join Oskar and his crew on their next voyage. Tim wanted to document the life of whalers, to showcase the challenges they faced and the camaraderie they shared. The crew was skeptical of Tim's soft appearance and doubted he could endure the rigors of their lifestyle. However, they allowed him on board, curious about his intentions.
Tim immersed himself in the life of the whalers, eating what they ate, drinking their drinks, and braving the freezing winds and tumultuous seas. He witnessed the grit and resilience of these men, as they toiled day and night, battling the elements to make their catch.
As the days turned to weeks, Tim grew more accustomed to the life at sea and earned the respect of the crew. They shared stories, sang songs, and even taught Tim some of the tricks of their trade.
When the voyage was over and the ship docked to resupply, Tim, with a notebook in hand, approached Oskar. He had been particularly intrigued by Oskar's fondness for the expensive American cigarettes. "Oskar," Tim began, "I've seen how hard you work and the dangers you face. Why do you spend so much of your hard-earned wages on these American cigarettes?"
Oskar, a towering figure with a weather-beaten face, paused and rubbed his thick beard. He stared into the distance, lost in thought. The air was filled with anticipation as the crew and Tim awaited his response.
Finally, Oskar looked Tim in the eye and said, "It costs a lot to be a man. The end.

Crazy how fast times have changed. I started buying up gear and guns and knives when I was still living at home, watching nutnfancy videos, but deep down I didn't think I'd ever see any reason to use most of that gear for it's intended purpose in my lifetime. Now literally every day that goes by seems like one step closer to some manufactured catastrophe that will leave civilization in ruins. Nutn was right about a lot, but one thing especially is that all that gear is an investment. I might have looked silly to friends or even my parents buying some of that stuff, but when things started to get serious and you couldn't get a lot of stuff due to the panic buying, I felt like I was sitting pretty. Also a ton of things I bought have doubled or more in price over the last 15 years. It never goes bad, and above all, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and end up dead.

A couple suggestion; keeping a small charger and usb cable or a battery bank for charging your phone, even if it’s just to get your phone to 50% charge, could be something as small as one of those tube style chargers with 5000 mWh capacity. And if you have the room, a spare, charged radio battery, one of the regular capacity ones instead of the higher capacity ones .

I do SAR, I have VERY reliable 123's that are rechargeable, I keep two racks that can support all my light on full burn for twenty four hours, times two, basically one in use the other charging... Take from that what you will, btw you will have surplus power using that type of method, rarely does one burn all lights on high power for 24 straight, it's usually in say four hour blocks, so conservatively one can run for three nights on one "24 hour pack/set" which is what my duty pack is set up for, based off a 72 hour assault ruck, I was a Cav Scout, aka the best "survival gear" testers on the planet. But point is reliable and worth its weight, btw I hear the way to go very soon will be graphine-based platforms, very light weight, capable of massive input/output numbers and very reliable in harsh conditions, but as of now too "new" to be on the mass market so it's cost prohibitive and lack the manufacturing base also for the same reason, give it time and it will be like why was there ever anything else.

Make sure to re wrap your 18650 batteries any time the wrap has any type of tear. The center of the battery is positive, and the entire wrapped portion is negative. If metal touches both at the same time you are in for a good explosion and fire. Battery safety is no joke with 18650, 2800, and 28650 batteries. Also the 18650 will store easily for a year at 80% charge. Never store one completely full or completely empty, and they will perform for years.

I have 2 battery cabinets. One for large batteries for tools, drones, etc. One small for technical or digital devices.

Hey Proho, What are your thoughts and impressions on the widely available Milwaukee 12 V mini chainsaw? Is that worth packing in a BOV or bag?

My battery management is simple. I hunt for a remote control with some that is working.

I have been thinking about this a lot. Do you think it is necessary to have a faraday cage around some big battery packs, such as the ones that could be charged by solar?

A faraday cage would not help if the batteries were connected to something that could attract lightning. You'd at the very least need one lightning rod at good height above the solar panels.
