Obsessions are defined as: recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive, unwanted, and that in most individuals causes marked anxiety or distress and the individual attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, urges, or images, or to neutralize them with some thought or action (i.e by performing a compulsion). And compulsions are defined as: repetitive behaviors (like hand washing, checking, etc) or mental acts (like praying, counting, repeating words silently) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to the rules that must be applied rigidly. The behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation. However, these behaviors or mental acts either are not connected in a realistic way with what they are designed to neutralize or prevent or are clearly excessive. Now these obsessions or compulsions are time consuming and cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. And these issues cannot be better explained by the symptoms of another mental disorder

Seriously! My therapist keeps bugging me to tell someone in my life that I have OCD but how am I supposed to tell someone something so personal and which has so crippled my life when OCD has been coined into a joke phrase. Along with checking, avoidance is another compulsion of my. I haven't been able to turn on an oven in 6 years until earlier this. I'm not capable of leaving my house overnight. How the hell is someone who sees OCD as having a quark suppose to understand the gravity of this disorder?

Thank you so much!! It really bothers me when people say they are “OCD” about the clothes in their closet, or are a “little OCD” about how they like to organize their purse... As someone with real OCD it makes me not want to tell anyone I have OCD because then I feel like it will be downplayed or misunderstood. I think most people think I just need to have everything “neat”. Thanks for sharing!!

Back when I was a sophomore in high school, I remember taking forever to finish my written homework assignments because I was obsessed with neat penmanship and would throw away a homework assignment, even when it was completely or nearly completed or I knew that all of the answers were correct, because some of the letters were lopsided or there were too many smudges. I think the longest it took me to complete an assignment was eight hours. I didn't realize this was because of my OCD until after I graduated high school. Fortunately, I haven't had this problem since I graduated high school. I did go to counseling during my Junior year and had my prescription adjusted, so that may have helped.

I get you. My OCD began around age 12. I would make my bed first thing every morning. I would then stand back and look at it and if it didn't look "perfect" to me...I would tear it all apart and make it again. I grew out of that insane ritual but now it's just morphed into other obsessions. Ugh!!

A person can't get over OCD just by 'not doing it anymore' any more than someone depressed can just stop thinking depressing thoughts. It's super complicated. A licensed mental health professional can help. And, if that person isn't helping you, go find another one. We are not always a good match with a counselor first time.

Really useful Kati! I shared this with my fellow students as we have a psychology teacher who essentially told us OCD is neatness and germaphobia, nothing else, that it is trauma based. She then casually related very not OCD behaviours she has and said 'i've got a bit of it" which was very invalidating, with no education about the obsessions, compulsions and mostly mental aspects. So thankyou, hopefully they will understand we have been taught dangerous stereotypes. I have control of my OCD mostly now, but it took so much to get here, people need to know that is possible. I think something to mention in the future could be the speed of fixations, like some have a paticular compulsion for a long time, but i had rapid cycling fixations which changed often, until i drowned in 10s at a time, but other times have had 1 major compulsion, so that would be good to hear your take on. Thanks again xxx

Thanks, Kati. ❤️ that was so helpful and reassuring. I hate when someone says “I’m so OCD when it comes to cleaning..” as if it’s something that’s funny or Ok to deal with. It’s exhausting and terrifying at times. Although I lnow that the obssessions that I have don’t make any sense, I can’t stop following what they tell me to do. People need to understand the difference between OCD with all the intrapersonal anxiety and distress that come with it and OCPD with its ridgidity and perfectionistic tendencies that tend to cause interpersonal difficulties.

I love that at the end, you said: "...we can get our life back." OCD can truly take a persons life away. It can rob them of everything: time, friends, family, jobs, beloved items, and keeps people isolated and afraid to reach out. Knowing there's hope of regaining a life you once knew is like finding the hidden treasure. It's like finding yourself again, the you that you thought was gone.

My. best friend had several exposure treatments/therapies and they never worked in the long run. She actually still struggles with her childhood experiences and triggers as well as her unhealthy relationships with her parents. In her case, talk therapy is actually more helpful as exposure therapy as she says that she needs to overcome her issues and her past first and needs to build new and different relationships first, before exposure therapy can have a long-lasting effect on her OCD thoughts and compulsions.

So, I have so been part of the misconception. And not to be seen as a person who misuses a diagnosis as a adjective, my house is a wreck. It bothers me so much. I always say "I've never been able to make a house into a home." But the truth is, like the person in the ad before your video, yeah, it's an interesting way to reframe things. I always say, and feel for real - that there is a person with OCD inside of me trying to get out - but I use the messy house as a reason I am NOT OCD. I have compulsions but not traditional ones you heard about like relocking doors or checking the stove, but definitely thoughts that I can't get away from and a brain that just can't organize my thoughts enough to accomplish anything. Esp if I can't do it perfectly. The job I have feeds into it nicely. Graphic design where perfection is required. I was also a nurse. Again perfection required. Errors shameful esp a med error. Yikes. Such pressure to be perfect. Many don't think of medicine like that but think of how we feel when any little mistake or misstep is done by a medical professional. Thanks for the video and giving me food for thought. Happens this week I'm living thru the effects of a compulsion.

@fearfulpixel6165
@fearfulpixel6165 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve been through pure-o, it was awful because it can become mentally and physically draining. CBT therapy was offered to me for anxiety, depression and pure-o as they’re all based around reframing your thought patterns and challenging ingrained negative perceptions of yourself e.g. not believing thoughts where you’re stupid or incapable and asking why you think like that in the first place Also meditation is really helpful as well because it helps to train your focus onto something else rather than negative thoughts. Once you’ve done it enough it becomes second nature to do it daily, and when you get into a stressful or depressed mood, it’s more natural to turn your attention to meditation to balance out your thoughts rather than obsess over them
@spidrmage
@spidrmage 3 жыл бұрын
I listen to the OCD Stories podcast and most of the guests on there who happen to be therapists recommend treating the depression first, and then starting ERP. You should seek out an OCD specialist and not just a run of the mill therapist, as they might actually make your OCD worse and aren’t properly trained.

I'm very inflexible with others trying to change things in my space or schedule. Turns out I have OCPD! I feel like this could be the case for lots of people like me, but because there is so much less awareness of OCPD and such a wide misconception of what OCD is, it can really throw people like me off while also being really dismissive of the issues people with OCD go through.

I guess a lot of people have to check the stove a number of times. For me, it's not that I need an exact number, it's just that I need to do it repeatedly until I can stop dissociating it.

Thank you for the great video. I have been battling OCD for the better part of my life. One thing that I don't understand is that my Psychiatrist says that they are moving away from classifying it as an anxiety disorder which doesn't make sense to me because of the great anxiety I feel. It began with religious scrupulosity when I was 14 or 15 years old.

I'm a pure O , and the intrusive thought/ worry is that something is on fire. I'm constantly turning around and checking the area in the kitchen to make sure I don't see smoke. I also obsess and worry about some one is dead that I love and I dont know it yet.

Thanks Kati for separating obsessive thoughts from compulsions. And that a person or I can have intrusive unwanted thoughts without necessarily following through with an action, however, for me unwanted thoughts still persist. A milder compulsion for me is, for example, checking my set alarm many times before I sleep! Annoying; this healthy anxiety (not late for work) for me or will it get worst? I think the intrusive unwanted thoughts are more troubling for me (using the stop sign technique somewhat helpful). Any suggestions?

Thank You, Kati. Can you please elaborate on the parental enmeshment point that you mentioned in this video? My parents enmesh with me a lot, even if I find ways to get away from them. For instance, if I get away by saying "Ok, I've got to study now/attend my classes", they will barge into my room and sit right beside me, thus overwhelming me HELL LOT! Moving out is not seen as a good practice in my culture. What's your opinion on this?

3:30. That’s totally me. Whenever I’m leaving the house in my car, especially before heading to work, I have to constantly check my lights, sinks, my garage door and sometimes my ceiling fans. I’m afraid I’ll leave the water running and flood my house or leave the lights on and waste electricity, or leave my garage door open, etc. I don’t have a therapist for any of my issues but what I’ve found helps with this is to take a picture of the lights and sinks that are triggers for this showing that they are turned off and my garage door after I close it. Even after taking the pictures I usually compulsively check them a few more times but having the pictures allows me to eventually leave the house. Once I get on the road or to work I don’t have to keep checking my pictures or anything, it’s just knowing that they are there allows me to get through my day. I’ve thought for a while that it’s probably some sort of OCD but this seems to confirm it. Wish I knew how to make it stop.

Education regarding OCD is a good way to learn more about the disorder, if you can't find a OCD specialist to see (online or offline). OCD Stories podcast and International OCD Foundation youtube channel are great resources for educational content.

I hope you've found OCD stories podcast and International OCD Foundation's KZfaq content. It's very unfortunate that there's so many "I treat OCD" therapists who have no idea what they are doing when they try to help the client/patient with cognitive talk therapy.
