If you were wondering where the sax player was until the end, he was the guy playing the organ. They were all multi-instrumentalists. Never a band like them before or since.

When you consider that Robbie Robertson also wrote "The Weight," the probability that THIS is his best song, makes you realize what a great songwriter Robertson was. RIP. Also, Rick Danko's lead vocal perfectly conveys the deep emotional content of this masterpiece. This is real music.

You can feel joy listening to it because the lyrics Robbie wrote were so amaziing, and Rick sings it with such feelings and soul, however the song is considered one of the best heartbreak songs of all times "and the dawn don't resuce me". I think most of us remember after a break up, we would get up in the morning and thinking things will be better, and then as the day goes on you realize they are not better the dawn don't rescue you! Robbie was in his twenties when he wrote this, some of his other master pieces he wrote in his early to mid twenties, he was an old soul.

Listen to the lyrics, it is about a love affair gone wrong. Anyone that have loved and lost can identify with this song. And Rick puts all his feelings into it. The line "and the dawn don't rescue me no more" gets me every time.

When I heard the news that Robbie Robertson had died, the line "and the sun don't shine anymore, and the rain falls on my door", came to mind. They were all unique, but Robbie's songwriting and guitar playing was like no one else, and Rick's voice and soulful singing tears your heart out.

Robertson is the fourth member of The Band to die, August 2023. following Richard Manuel in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999 and vocalist/drummer Levon Helm in 2012. Keyboardist and organist Garth Hudson is now the group's only living member.

Played at my Brother's funeral...30 years it still hurts. Such a heartbreaking song. I know it's about losing a lover.. but to me..when Danko sings.. 'Makes no difference how far i go..like a scar the hurt will always show'..& "well i love you so much..its all that i can do..just to keep myself from telling you.. that i never felt so alone before"..man ..i can relate to that pain even the guitar is crying.😢thank you to the person that requested this & thank you for your reaction .you found the song soothing , we all get different feelings..me ..i get agony, loneliness..each word & each sentence...total freaking dispair.. Lol😊 did i go overboard with my emotions? You heard it differently ..oh well ..i guess.. it makes no difference. Just glad you played it✌

Rick sings with so much emotion, it cuts right to the bone. Garth on sax at the end just brings a sense of hope or at least acceptance at the end. Amazing performance

Mugs, glad you enjoyed it. There's just so much emotion in this song, and like "The Weight", it has an almost gospel feel. Pink Floyd "Us And Them" has amazing sax that trades off with the organ. It's another emotional song.

SO cool that you discovered this performance of this song. It has been a longtime favorite of mine for decades. I believe you would be in heaven if you watched the entire movie of “The Last Waltz”… the film was made by Martin Scorsese and there are several music artists that perform with The Band. Loving music the way you do, you owe it to yourself to watch it.

I have truly enjoyed your reactions to Elvis, I won't lie that's what brought me to your channel, I would love to see you react to American Trilogy, Just Pretend and you will be amazed at his gospel songs, that was a true love of his, but should you continue down this rabbit hole, you will be amazed. Thank you for checking out the King I will enjoy watching you become a fan, keep up the good work son,and I will be watching from Tennessee ❤

Not quite true. When Eric Clapton first heard their music, he was blown away. He was with Cream at the time, and felt they were stagnating. He flew from England to the US and went upstate New York (Woodstock) to meet with The Band, and was going to ask them to become a member, however he never got the nerve to ask. It was only years later when he introduced Robbie to the Rock and Roll hall of fame, he told him that.
