Frank Capra, the director, was an Italian immigrant who loved America. Coming from a very meager beginning, he and his family found success in their new country. Capra served in the military during WW1 (and his father died during the war). Capra was educated at CalTech. However, he struggled to find work after the war. He worked wherever he could -- farms, the oil field, gambling, etc. Eventually, he entered the movie industry (first in roles as an extra on set) before he made his first film. He eventually found success. So, when making this film, Capra included the character of "Mr. Martini" because it represented the success that his family sought -- and ultimately found -- in America.

Funnily enough, I just watched this for the first time a few days ago and can see why it's considered such a classic.

13:47 After shooting the proposal in one take, director Frank Capra was told that Donna and Jimmy left out two pages of dialogue. Capra said, With acting like that, who needs dialogue?"

Don’t forget Mary went away to college for 4 years too. She doesn’t get enough credit for what she does.

Hard to believe that Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter) is Drew Barrymore's great uncle.

I can't stand Potter. But being an actor as he IS, it's quite possible that he could be imitating someone he hates as well!!! Barrymore does a spot ON job of it!!!!!! ( I'm just saying, many actors, I can BET can DO it! ) June

This is the greatest Christmas film ever made. There are those who don't like that we don't see Mr. Potter get any kind of punishment. For me, I have never had to think about Mr. Potter's fate because Charles Dickens did it for us. Mr. Potter is the unredeemed Ebenezer Scrooge, so that vision of Christmas Yet to Come that scared Scrooge into redemption is Potter's fate; to die alone, be buried in the local cemetery, and be forgotten by time.

Nick the bartender was played by Sheldon Leonard, who went on to produce the Danny Thomas Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle USMC and The Dick Van Dyke Show.

todays movies can learn from this .....its a good all american story people can relate to, it didnt race swap the character, from the book, or make him gay, or have a political message and has a good traditional family message and values , and that why so many people like it, and it no one dislikes it

t's a Wonderful Life is more than a Christmas movie I am not christen and I love it. It is a feel good movie and one of the first time travel element movies. It is so much about time travel or alternative realities that Back to the future allude to it :). Fun fact the movie was not a financial success when it came out and was forgotten. Only because of a copyright registration error ( Which was fixed decades later) the movie was considered public domain for years and because of the that the Tv Networks aired over and over every Christmas till it became a cult classic. Another fun fact the scene with the uncle that was drunk and fell down was adlib because one of the stage worker dropped something in the middle of filming. I love George speech to Mr Potter about the working class. The actor who plays Mr Potter is by the way Drew Barrymore great uncle. If you want another great Jimmy Stewart movie you should watch Mr Smith goes to Washington.

This film helped Jimmy Stewart after his time in the war help him process his time over there.

i always related to george because i, too, was deaf in one ear my whole life. but i'm still waiting for my clarence. where's my clearance clarence? frank capra made a slew of "feel good" movies before this one. it was kind of his trademark. watch "american madness" (1932), "mr deeds goes to town" (1936), "you can't take it with you" (1938), "mr smith goes to washington" (1939, the last 2 also star jimmy stewart), and "meet john doe" (1941, also christmas themed). he also brought us "it happened one night" (1934, the first movie to win all 5 of the major oscars), "lost horrizons" (1937), "arsenic and old lace" (1944) and "state of the union (1948). sadly capra is greatly underrated these days but his films possess a special emotional touch no director has come close to emulating. "ruggles of red gap" (1935) directed by Leo McCarey and "sullivan's travels" (1941) directed by preston sturges come the closest though. thanks for the video.

the reason there was a run on the bank is because it was 1929...the year of the stock market crash...banks literally closed their doors because all of their loans were called and alot failed in that period.
