Uncle Billy craahing into stuff as he leaves the party for Harry was a stagehand dropping stuff. The actor adlibbed the "I'm alright" lines to cover for it so they didn't have to reshoot the scene.

Yeah well, they'd killed 60 million people in WW2, so girls had to be convinced to provide the replacements. Which cinematically led to all of those dysfunctional, bitter divorce movies later, beginning with The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960).

Nick the bartender was played by legendary actor/producer Sheldon Leonard. The main characters in "The Big Bang Theory" were named after him.

Glad you liked it; a cinematic masterpiece on all levels. (and yes... the bouncer in Nick's Bar was played by Cy Schindell, who appeared as a heavy in many Stooges films; this was one of his last appearances, as he died from some sort of cancerous infection he contracted in the South Pacific jungles while serving in WWII).

In the 1940's there were drunk driving laws on the books but they were only selectively enforced. Then there was no specific definition for what what constituted drunk driving. In a small town where the policeman knew the perpetrator and where there were no injuries, it is very doubtful that the driver would be charged. So the situation in this movie was realistically portrayed for the time.

A great film. BTW-The pool they fell into? That's the Swim Gym at Beverly Hills High School. Graduated there in '81 and used it every day. It's still there!

Fun fact. WWll was the last time Congress “OFFICIALLY” declared war. That’s why the country mobilized altogether. Every “conflict” since has been undeclared but it hasn’t stoped Congress from approving copious amounts of money to fund them. But some how we never have any money for quality of life improvements here like healthcare, infrastructure, public schools, homeless and hungry Veterans and Elderly. Weird🙄

During one scene, when you said ‘Oh that’s kind of looks like California’. That’s because it was California. That scene was shot at a movie ranch in Encino, Los Angeles; the gym scene with the pool was Beverly Hills High School, and other parts of the movie was in Culver City.

Back then, DWI laws were pretty lenient. Also, no one noticed how drunk (or not drunk) George was at the time he hit the tree and for all anyone (particularly the law) would know, he just skidded due to the ice.

Lionel Barrymore is Drew's great uncle, her grandfather is John Barrymore. Both her grandfather and father were both older when their children were born. In their 40's when they children were born.

Like many of the younger generation these days, you don’t seem to have much tolerance or a sense of humour; nor do you take innocent situations for what they are… innocent situations. For example, there’s playful, harmless *humour* in George not giving Mary her robe back. He’s simply *teasing* her. That’s all. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Although you’re quite perceptive in some aspects, I have to say that some classic films are, sadly, just wasted on some (particularly younger) people. Maybe, of course, I’m overreacting a little.

That's what I thought at first, but really he just watched this strictly from a literal perspective and as you said he was quite perceptive. I really got a kick out of his reaction "She's a Maid!" and "He would still go to jail for DUI! just to name a couple, there are many more gems in there

Old maid is a negative old school term for a woman who never married. Spinster is synonym. Many of us librarians like our jobs and are happy whether we are married or single. I got married to a corporate accountant.

So today (where I live anyway), George will have committed a tier 2 DUI involving damage. He would be facing fines, probably a good year of his license being suspended and a couple days in jail - if first-time, no priors. I think George Bailey could get through that.

They actually filmed those "freezing" Christmas Eve scenes during a heat wave! The director even sent everyone home before noon one day after someone fainted on the set. That river water was probably the perfect balmy swimming temperature. 😂. 🥶. 🥵

You missed the fact that the boy that was talking to Mary at the dance and then opened up the swimming pool after being given the key was Carl (Alalfa) Switzer from the Little Rascals/Our Gang films....

Although Frank Capra made some good, straightforward comedies, he was also known for this kind of modern fable. Two of my favorites are "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Pocketful of Miracles." His films were more popular in the depression and WWII era, but fell out of favor in the 50's. They didn't really come back into popularity until the 80's and 90's when more of a feeling of community became fashionable again.

You were a little concerned that he would still go to jail. You're showing your youth. Drunk driving prosecutions did not become a major thing until the 80s so his accident would have been pretty unremarkable back in the day. In the 1980s groups like MADD started lobbying politicians and put pressure on them to enact tougher drunk driving penalties.

This dude getting upset over George not giving her the robe back, as a married man I can say you don’t understand man and women sexual dynamics. George was being playful and she obviously still liked him after that, proving she didn’t hate the situation he had her in. The whole “ he is making violent love to me” shows that Mary does not have hang up about sexual innuendos or playful sexual play. She is not a prude.

Another point to remember is that the neighbour who suggested that George kiss Mary was still in the house across the street (and probably discreetly listening). Had Mary really been frightened, she only needed to really scream.@@Axofalltrades87

It's a wonderful movie! It has become a beloved Christmas classic. However, it was denounced by the FBI as Communist propaganda after its release. They claimed the movie displayed poor old Mister Potter, the Banker, as grasping and greedy when he was just being a fine American Capitalist. Oddly enough, neither the FBI nor the movie itself ever denounced him for stealing the $8,000 that Uncle Billy lost. I guess, since he was an upstanding Capitalist, it was a simple case of "Finders keepers, losers weepers," huh?

Almost EVERYONE drank alcohol on the regular back then. When anyone got drunk it was looked at as funny instead of shameful like today. I don’t think it was expected that you wouldn’t drink some and drive.
