Mate, it looks fantastic. It has an amazing Black Templars vibe as far as I'm concerned. But I totally relate to that vicious circle where you're not quite happy with one thing, even if you're not sure why, and then you start questioning all sorts of stuff that you were completely happy with before. It's good to hear it happens to others, and how to get around it. After a bit of distance those vices can start to look like virtues. Really enjoyed this video - cheers!

First off; I always really appreciate showing that it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Can't spell "painting" without "pain". Second, I want to echo the other commenters that while this looks great compared to what I normally see, I think the color temperature is the issue; the moment you put the green wash on the gold, I went "oh that looks really good... but not on this model". John Blanche seemed to always go for the more sepia, orangey golds rather than using the very limited greens available in the Zorn palette for it. That, and the use of a shockingly high number of warm accents against the cold armor, like reds on the bolter casing, even more purity seals, etc. Obviously we mere mortals can't put his level of ragged edges on a physical object that has to see the table, but that basic idea may be useful; consider amping up the usage of brown grime on the armor to help break it up? This is a very helpful video and I'm really glad you posted it! I'm definitely going to try making purity seals like this, at minimum.

I think it’s lookin great. I understand that feeling though and I think it’s vitally important for us all to show mistakes. The myth of the flawless artist has really gotten out of hand and I think videos like this and some others I’ve seen have done a great job to push back on that and show that art making is a wonderful, life-affirming process that sometimes makes us absolutely miserable 😂

left shoulder pad reads lighter than the helmet only thing I can see.. Also think something of a similar white on the legs or maybe the thigh flaps of the model might also help tie it together. Being massively pedantic of course, I'd be very happy with this.

Henry, I think the whole scheme looks amazing. For those of us who love painting as much (if not more) than other facets of the hobby, the hyper self-critical stance we take is part and parcel; it can be a hinderance but it's also what drives us to constantly improve. I'm glad that looking back over the footage brought back a sense of achievement with the key aspects of the scheme. As personally, I think you nailed it, particularly with that warm red/brown introduced into the recesses I immediately see this in John Blanche's codex art. If you asked me one thing I think you should change, it's the Storm Bolter casing. Red/yellow casing, hazard stripes, flames, litany decals? Honestly I can't decide either, but something to sell that juxtaposed goofy-yet-grimdark 90s aesthetic that's within the key accent colours of Templars. The tilt plate looks fantastic and I think the black Bolter feels misplaced in combination. My instinct would be to go for red, but this could change depending on each tilt plate's heraldry.

@@cultofpaint Excited to see how the alterations will change your perception of it. Although, going by all the great suggestions I've seen on here, picking which might be the hardest part. Had a quick scroll through and realised I'm about the 100th person to tell you not to beat yourself up in one way or another, so sorry for the preaching - I know if it were me I'd be sitting there with a reluctant modicum of self-worth, muttering, I hate you all for validating me. But I think the self-reflection, or admission of failure in some regard, is what makes yours' (and Andy's) content special in that it follows that uniquely personal journey we all go through building and painting armies. It's a privilege to be part of that and I'm so grateful you share it.

This is one thing about my start to a Space Marine army is getting the right look thats in my head. Out of all of my armies I am finding solidifying a color scheme and theme for my custom chapter to be the most difficult. I feel a lot of us, including you guys, we see soo many unique custom color schemes and even different takes on the lore accurate space marine chapters/legions, that we maybe find it harder to get something exactly as we picture it in our minds that can be distinguished among the rest of the community. I definitely feel for you here as you really put a lot of hours and patients into this one termie and you still have a whole squad, let alone a whole army to do and it definitely seems like a huge mountain to climb and Im not even the one painting them haha

I think you're too hard on yourself - that's an amazing figure. My only suggestion is to shift the green out of the yellow and gold. I think if you tried a warm yellow and amber washes instead of the necro-green gold, the warm "blanchitsu" would shine! You've got blue armor, warm white, warm sand bases... I think the green is clashing the warm tones instead of complimenting them.

You guys have the best paint jobs on youtube, but more importantly to me, you have the best attitude! I appreciate the honesty and sincerity. It can go a long ways to step back and look hard at a piece, realize that's good, but not quite what you envisioned. Then you have to raise the bar and do your best to adjust the plan/scheme, and capture what you're after. Sometimes, my vision of a mini, or an army, will change right in the middle of my test models, and I have to pivot to make the new vision work, and then adjust my plan for the army.

Sorry to enjoy your suffering but I really appreciated how honest this was and I am very glad you chose to post it. It represents what I think is most people's experience of trying something new. I also found it immensely valuable when you talked through how you analysed what went wrong. It might not mean much but I think it's great. If your expectations are higher than this then I can't wait to see when you inevitably nail it. One minor comment... I think a different colour choice for the weapon would add another point of interest. With how much you guys love John Blanche I was expecting some silver, red, or yellow bolters. An easy tweak for one test model maybe?

That model is awesome. The gray for the crux looks great, and the small change in tone helps to set it as a different material. The yellow on the shield, while at first it looks off, I really quite like it. It looks to be more weathered or sun bleach than a brighter yellow would be. I hope this helps a little.

I've painted the black on my Deathwatch marines in a very similar way (just without the oil wash bit) and I found that Celestra Grey from citadel has a very nice tint to bring it away from just plain gray - it's a bit lighter than Mechanicus Standard, but I recommend trying it out. Also a trick to get the perfect brown-ish gray that I've seen used a lot was mixing Skavenblight dinge with Stormvermin fur. And one final thing that I've used a lot and people have been picking up is using Ratling grime contrast to wash silvers, resulting in a somewhat darker more battered look.

My personal opinion, I would remove the gold part from the powerpack. Here some thoughts and what's worked for me. - Maybe a little more color. I find it more easy to read the black with a little more contrast, so a red bolter and a brighter blue-grey for the skulls on knee and shoulder. - I go with a cold black leaning on the blue side but warm with my red and white - Painting the hydraulic pipes in silver I hope it helps, as a good or bad example , to find what you're looking for, 😅. I think it's the temperatures, thats giving you the impression about something being off, like the black is cold and the white is warm, whilst it would be more realistic if it was warm in the front & top and the cold in the back & bottom, so if you used some light grey-blue as shade for the white, and maybe some brown as highlight for the front of the black armor, then the temperatures would be fixed.

I think the terminator looks great. I get it isn't perfect and that you aren't happy with it. Take a break come back to it and see the good as well as the "bad" your are focusing on. I'd be happy if my painting looked like that full stop. I love the filters and off colour effects that are created. As ever this has given me lots of ideas and surely that is the point. Keep up the great work, don't be so hard on yourself - I do wonder if KZfaq is good for creator's mental health. We consumers aren't as critical as you may think. Mate, these look great!! I know where you are coming from though, I am terrible for hating my own work, I came up with a load of camo schemes for my imperial guard armour on a bit of plasticard that looked pretty good, but when I settled on one and tried it on the tank, I thought 'this looks crap', and ended up re-priming over it and starting again with the same scheme, but different colours and now I've chickened out from doing the mottling (scheme based on the royal scots greys armour camoflage used in the italian campaign, its light mud, mottled with blue black with an olive drab disruptive pattern over it) so at least you were brave enough to say, no, its not beating me, im going to finish this model!

I've been mid-shading Corvus Black for a few years, but highlighting with German Engine Grey Air from Vallejo. I was wondering if Eshin Grey would be a better highlight to keep the contrast down and you answered that, it looks phenomenal and adds a nice blue/grey Templars look so good in. You really nailed the paint scheme! Glad I subbed so I could see another awesome paint job 😁 I used S75 DecayedMetal/Runelord Bras on Helbrecht a while back and he came out looking fantastic. A much more aged gold than GW 's version IMO. I can't recommend their metallics enough. I've been using your Astral Claws tutorial for my Guardians of the Covenant army in 30k. Can't be happier with it. Thanks for the great painting tutorials!

This is stunning, of course, but if you're asking for things that could elevate it, I'd highly suggest a glossier finish to the black armor only. I know how much you like matte finishes, but to me satin or gloss really enriches and deepens inorganic black shapes.

“Just a disaster”…….😢 I am sad because, I am a complete noob amateur to 40K and my faction that I have chosen is Black Templars I have built all of my units and support armor …primed them all Chaos Black and now …………………………………………………………………………………… Complete mental breakdown…. way too many techniques and styles and effects to “ZONE IN ON “ and say ok this is what I want them to look like and this is how I will represent them on a Battlefield and I am proud of what I have done…… I am not sure but I have like ur Terminator and I really did not think they weee a bunch of chameleons looking in different directions….. I am new to this …. I need to keep watching to see what you really wanted and what you are proud to say …” I got it!” I have subscribed and will be on edge of my seat to see the outcome!!!!

The white is some of the best i've ever seen on a Space Marine (those little rivets also look great and i'm glad you had success trying something new), however i was a bit struck during the first sequence of the video, which i presume you picked as it is particularly unflattering, that the black didn't look great at all. But purely because of the Finish imo. It looks a bit well... blobby (via youtube video ofc) it appears glossy where it shouldn't to my eye. I don't know if it's one of the GW paints as they are good but notoriously inconsistent in their finishes/mediums, it's worst in those leg tube things. One thing i would suggest is that my experience with Black Legion is that it is absurdly matte, to an unprecedented degree in GW's range imo, and i noticed you used it in a very focused way through the airbrush and it's not gelled well with the typically very satin GW off-blacks. The other thing is that i think the yellow/orange/red of the tilt shield is bringing some real excitement to the model and saves it for me (so yes i do love it), maybe look for more areas to push it? John Blanche low key made the 'Zorn Palette' his own but it predates him for a reason.

I don't think it is half as bad as you think. I think the two major items are a bit more scratches and edge highlights using silver / white and staining the white with a yellow brown wash. The black of the gun looks unfinished which might throw you off. The silver is too dark but you said that already. Give it an extra hour and you ll be much happier

A paint scheme for pre-heresy Assassins. There has to be a way to do them in an unconventional way! Maybe taking some inspiration, Splinter Cell? But these look good to me, I have stripped my mini's for less.

I think they look great, certainly far better than I can do. Some more pops of reds and yellows, especially on the gun and fist would help bring more of a Blanche flavor. And maybe differentiating more between the various grays and silvers? The silver piping could be a bit brighter and colder. I also really understand not being happy with something that didn't turn out the way you imagined. It's especially galling when it's not because of some technical flaw, like the blends need work or the highlight is the wrong tone. And the issue is entirely down to a disconnect between how it looks in real life versus how you imagined it. I think your plan is on the right track and will be very helpful to other people struggling with this sort of thing.

In my experience, this is where I'd go back to the reference. I think if it were me looking at Blanche's artwork, I'd reflect on the fact that there are templars with red weapon casings, and even some red and steel trim. Maybe that'd be a good place to go. For what it matters, I think this is a lovely take, and if I saw this army across the table to me, I would be absolutely chuffed to go into battle against them.

It is a formidable scheme, that's out of question. But, in an attempt to look for something "odd" in it, I'd say the yellow colour in the shoulder shield doesn't add up. Maybe in red, matching with other details, could make everything come together. But is am incredible job, no matter what. 🙂

Honestly the only thing I'm not sold on is the black bolter casing. I would've used it for additional contrast. Otherwise it's a terrific piece. I'm sure there are tweaks you can do to make it even better, but I'm confident you'll get there!

The end result looks great Henry. The only thing that may be causing you not to look them is the cool highlights (blue) vs the warm shading (orange). I've always been told to go warm highlights, cools shadows. Maybe replacing the blue with a neutral grey for the highlights might help. To be honest though, they look great. Thanks so much for your honesty and the level of detail you always provide in the KZfaq and Patreon videos.

I like it but I think it's very subdued. It's like its been painted with lighting from a very overcast / stormy day - eg weak omnidirectional lighting. I think it looks more realistic than most. :)

I think it looks great! But i totally get where you coming from as I do the same when I have a specific idea in my head. Maybe if it looks "off" to you as you want the Blanche look the whole storm bolter could be silver and the Crux could be a little bit lighter? Maybe a more bone grey? Just comparing side by side with the definitive Blanche art of the 3rd ed rule book.
