But are we really going to pretend that, on the flip side, Latinos don’t also make sweeping generalizations like this as well? A prime example being how all Asians are mainly labeled as “Chinos”? It's funny you say that. I'm an American and my skin is white. I think of myself as white though I'm 1/4 native. This really messes up people's perception of me. In the US, people think I'm Eastern European. In Europe, people think I'm Slavic. In the Middle East, most people think I'm Arab, but a different type than they are - a lot of people think I'm Syrian, except Syrians think I'm Lebanese or Ukrainian. No one relates to me, even the people who are like me. I'm always "something else" or "not like them", even if I am like them.

To be fair…if she did genetic/ancestry testing, you might be surprised. My son’s dad escaped from Vietnam. He’d consider himself Vietnamese, but knew there was some Chinese ancestry too. If you study the history, you can see where there are links. Anyways…my son’s ancestral testing came back with higher percentage Chinese than any other southeast Asian ancestry. Despite his dad being “Vietnamese”. She could indeed be part Chinese. I get what you’re saying though, that people unfortunately assume, group people based on some features & don’t listen. That is frustrating.

@@Alphacentauri819 I have nothing against discussing ancestry. I’m Canadian, but I have Polish and Irish roots. That’s a whole other conversation. My daughter in law has a French accent and she is clearly québécoise French Canadian from the explanation I gave my neighbour, yet he still describes her as the “Chinese girl”. This happens a lot too. He’s not a bad guy, just a little ignorant.

@@kevinberger3501 yes, ignorant people everywhere. We all have been ignorant though,…but it can be easier to see in others. I’m adopted and I must say…please be careful with also just identifying her as where she was raised. That glosses over a huge layer of who she is. I’ve never felt like I belong. Although I smile and get along…I feel like I don’t really fit anywhere. A huge part is the adoption piece. It is a profound trauma…if you study the neuroscience and psychology. The science of the developing brain, bonding (attachment theory) etc, has grown astronomically in the last couple decades. She is likely a complexity of things, that is hard to define by one oversimplified label… Truly, all of us humans are categorized and oversimplified and a lot of it is incorrect (as it doesn’t fully represent who we are). Adoption can be a mishmash of grief (much unresolved) and hope, loss and hopefully love, and a myriad of other things. It’s not a nice, simple, packaged enterprise…but human lives, upended and changed forever. Yes, it’s lovely that people adopt, but it has always, always, come out of loss first. My heart goes out to your daughter in law. It wasn’t until my 40’s that I finally have gotten some awareness, answers, hope to the excruciatingly disruptive grief that came from the whole thing. It can have outreaching (and often invisible and the own person is unaware of where it’s coming from) effects. Many who haven’t been adopted ( and even those who have) have an overly simplistic and one dimensional view of adoption. Not only does it make them feel more comfortable, but it’s how it’s presented in society. We deal in a society that is so good at invalidating, covering up, and denying anything that feels complicated. It then is put in a “palatable” and “digestible” presentation, glossed over as “the best for everyone”. Anyways, your daughter in law is a Vietnamese adoptee, who was raised in French Canada, Canadian too…many other things that I’m sure she is. We all say things to simplify though.

Luckily the plane couldn't take off without us because we were half of the plane so the staff had to call the Mexican embassy in Chicago to confirm I was legit and then they let me board. After 23 years of living in Queensland, I finally returned to my home state of Western Australia. Because Queenslanders were once thought to be rather parochial and suspicious of people from other states, I had a little running joke that I used to pull on West Aussies. I would tell them that after I had been in Queensland for 20 years, I got a letter from the state government that said that their records had shown that I had been a constant resident of Queensland for 20 years and if I wanted to stick around for another 20, they would let me call myself a Queenslander! You wouldn't believe how many of my fellow West Aussies would nod at what I had said and then ask, "So, what did you do?"

@@mr.whiskers3283 Yeah, I thought as much myself as I was typing that story. Even now, I can't think of any U.S. states that have anything akin to the weird relationship Queensland and Western Australia have with all of the other states. The closest thing I can think of is in a saying that, apparently, Texans have regarding New Mexico. "Poor New Mexico, so far from Heaven, so close to Texas!" It also ties in with a great Aussie tradition of 'having some on' - telling someone a story that is a complete lie, but told in such a convincing way that the listener is completely taken in by it. When I first told that story, I fully expected to get called on it, but people whole-heartedly believed me, so I kept on telling it. I am apparently, by any metric, a Master Bull Shit Artist!

Well in Philippines there’s a song named Chinito and it’s about how asian guy’s eyes are handsome. The song is kinda cheesy though.

congratulations on your citizenship. ain't no easy feat. lot a hoops to jump through, and a lot of dough. my missus is from Chong Qing, she passed her citizenship test the first time through. very proud of her especially because her English is minimal and it's in the English language that the test is given
