This game gets a really bad rap, but I decided to make my own judgment after completing both versions of the game and attaining both of the "bad and good" endings.

It seemed that Nintendo was pushing game publishers to use the MMC1 board at some point, my personal suspicion is that they had created a surplus of that chip, and I think the cuts to this game came as a consequence of that. Also, they did seem to make the good ending discoverable, in the way that the final level is extremely hard for Jekyll making it somewhat likely that Hyde may catch up. At the end of level 5, you'll see Hyde take an alternate path, and since continues lock in Hyde's progress it seems to ratchet you toward the condition of having to continue the final level with both Jekyll and Hyde on stage 6. All it really takes to discover is wondering what the Hyde levels look like, and with stage 6 starting with climbing up to the rooftops it's a pretty big indicator that something new is going on.

The cut stages are the ones with you being able to enter a house and refill your health. It is full of arbitrary design and redesigns.

You're the first person I've heard with this opinion that I actually believe is being genuine and not just a contrarian. There has been a tendency to push back against the old opinions of a certain angry gamer, which is fine, but it's got to the point where the push back is a genre and fad of its own, therefore those opinions can no longer be trusted or should be received with skepticism. I genuinely believe you unironically have positive feelings towards this game and it comes through in your video, which makes it enjoyable. Thank you and have a great day.

After running this game a decent amount of times, I am still baffled about how a lot of it is coded including when the game speeds up with too many sprites. But playing it regularly is a pretty chill experience until you get to barrel town, its an interesting contrast to switch between jekyll and hyde with completely different game plays. Fun fact, you can also kills bees if you headbutt them with the down input.

They made him walk slow because this would be a very short game. You can turn around at the right moment and the bomb won't hurt you.

Ain’t nothing chill about this game man, I’m already sweating bullets by the time you get to the end of Level 1 and start getting utterly bombarded by bees, spiders, bomb maniacs, shitting birds and multiple Billy Pones’ running around.

Just played this game for the first time earlier this year and despite it's bad reputation, I also enjoyed it. Yeah, its not a great game of course, but far better than I had been led to expect. I was also surprised to find that I genuinely liked both Jaws and Hydlide on NES; two more games that I feel are typically discredited as being of poor quality on the console. On the flip side of the coin, I would highly recommend the Lone Ranger on NES by Konami. I feel that this game is legitimately very good (especially if you play it with a light gun) but I rarely hear any talk about it.

Lone Ranger is a fav of mine! really good. Like Jaws a lot too. Hydlide is on my to do list for "games to give a proper chance," I've only turned it on to be quickly killed by a slime XD

I can't afford a monthly patreon payment, but please accept this pittance as appreciation of your retro horror game coverage and for being one of the few youtubers whose voice I can tolerate. That last bit says more about me than anyone else.

I'm with you 100% on this. I played through this a few years back and while the gameplay is definitely a slog, once the back and forth mechanic is understood, it's actually really neat and the payoff at the end with that sweet serene stroll is delicious.

As a kid, I never even got past the first screen of the game; I didn't have the instructions because I was renting it from a store and couldn't figure out how to do anything besides move. I think MAYBE I figured out how to attack as J but he moved so slow I couldn't really do much.

I'm really glad that you decided to take the time to understand this game. Having the intended mechanics explained in a coherent way is really refreshing for this game. Programming a game takes an insane amount of time, so to see a reviewer stop and take a minute to get into the heads of the developers instead of just calling things "bad" is incredibly refreshing.

I used to think the barrels was just cheese rolling away. And I thought the endings depended on clear time. Which would have been a nightmare to attain.

I genuinely love this game. It’s such a bizarre, confusing, borderline avant garde mindfuck and there’s nothing else like it in the NES library. Once you learn the quirks, it sorta pulls you in and refuses to let go. It’s also ridiculously ahead of its time too. I can just imagine if this came out today, perhaps with a different coat of paint and concept; it would be an underground indie hit or really popular on Let’s Play channels as this super hard and unorthodox platforming thing like Getting Over It for example. It’s flawed, it’s weird, it’s obnoxious, but it’s got a special place in my heart. Also I believe the changes to the American version are down to censorship. Both levels that were removed from the US version include the gameplay feature where Jekyll… *ahem* goes into a woman’s house and receives special treatment to refill his health. The hanging figure in the final boss is also changed to some indescribable mess of pixels, either as an act of deliberate censorship to cover up what’s happening or a poor attempt at redrawing it to be more vague

Doesn't the cane expedite your transformation into Hyde if you try to attack civilians? If so, it'd make sense thematically; Jekyll giving into his aggressive urges causes him to transform into Hyde.

Some people don't seem to understand that James Rolfe is playing a character and while some of his criticism of games is valid the majority of his outrage is pure opinion. For example his review of Dick Tracy on the NES for the most part is very accurate and then he reviews a game and tears it apart when most of his frustration comes from not having the manual for the game. No one should ever watch AVGN expecting a serious review.

Agreed, I don't fault the guy for doing his thing but its definitely hyperbole and leads to a lot of people piling on and picking on these old games which often aren't really that bad. The end of his Dr Jekyll Revisited video even almost dips into seriously analyzing the deeper themes of the book and how they translate into the game, but then he quickly reverts back to "IT SUCKS." Maybe I'm getting too meta but it kind of reveals Rolfe/AVGN as his own Jekyll/Hyde situation.

@@BurstErrorThat definitely feels intentional, now that you mention it. James has acknowledged the similarities between AVGN and Board James as well and has painted them as dual personalities.

This is a game that would have appealed to an older player with some attention span. Problem was the NES was for kids 😂. Is it great? Ehhh not really but playing through it as an adult you can see what they were going for and appreciate it and have fun with it.
