Always enjoy the positivty, especially in the sea of negativity that is most of KZfaq these days. You have more patience than I, I find it hard to go back to this era of 3D games and if I do I find myself playing the 2D or 2.5D games, like I was playing Tomba a little while ago and fell back in love with it.

I’ve never been able to get into the first one, but I think Legacy of Darkness is extremely underrated….. or maybe it’s just because I love N64 games with dual “analog” controls

I played this game in the early 2000s on my N64 and although I never owned it, 2 weeks of rentals was enough to complete both characters good and bad endings. Back then the camera did the game dirty, but it wasn't something that was as rage inducing as many reviewers have said, sure it was rough but 3D controls were in it's infancy, you wouldn't expect a game of the late 90s would play as polished as the game from this age, which is super biased by them.

I've mostly stuck to your longer form video compilations which are awesome, but I decided to try this one out and it was very appreciated, I've been thinking about buying an N64 since I never had one growing up and missed out on a lot of games. The motorcycles always bothered me as there at least 50 years off from anything like that being invented, but it's fantasy horror and I shouldn't care lol

My first Castlevanias were those on the Gameboy, the Original and Belmont's Revenge. Neve rbeaten either as a kid but for Belmon'ts Revenge I found a cheat code that wouöld drop me straight at the Final Boss. I forgothow it went, but it was similar to the Password you got when Crystal Castle was the last remaining of the hub castles. Which is also how I found out, I either misplaced to symbols or confused one for another. In any case, Castlevania 64, love it. It was the first CV I made progress with, though it was Legacy of darknbess I managed to beat first. Never owned either, so I had to rent them. Years later I even bought LoD to reexperoience the game and still liked it. There's so many wrong with the games on the N64, that it's a real blast to play through. The biggest fun was the weird/bad German translation. Mandragora was translated to Duck Imitation (Entenimitat) to name one thing. Worst part inb the original was Carrie's underground waterway, though. The pillars were so small, I always drowned in the poisonous water unless I got really lucky. LoD fixed that problem by making the pillars bigger. Saddly, LoD didn't add the new tower levels to Carrie or Reinhardt. But Cornell visits all of them. There are valid reason to dismiss the game, like the overall bad camera controls or the running speed. Weirdly, jumping forward is faster than running. The more you know.

Great video. I liked your message at the end. I never thought this game was as bad as they said in the day. It is flawed but not terrible. This was their first try into a 3D Castlevania. I do prefer the later updated Legacy of darkness.

I keep forgetting 3D cats open any games even exist. I keep thinking things like if the genre is literally called metroidvania and then how can we don't have a 3D Castlevania game to match Metroid Prime?

Fair enough, but for my part I'm ready to forgive such amount of jank only if the rest is a masterpiece. 😅 Also I never feel any "acomplishment" after I somehow manage to finish an unbearably janky part. It just makes me want to insult the game even more. lol Anyway, nice vid as always.

I'm curious how you came to this mind set. For me I used to throw TV shows, movies and games I didn't like into the same "Ugh, bad" corner of my mind. But once I started actually programming myself, I found out just how much work goes into making any form of media, and started to really dislike the takes on the internet that slam "bad" games. When you think about the amount of time it takes to make then game, it feels really unfair to the developers, artists and musicians who poured hours and hours of their lives into this project to just call it some combination of bad words and bathroom jokes in my opinion.

so yeah, I actually starting making some very basic games a couple years ago! Definitely a big turning point in appreciating games as they are, understanding how monumentally hard it can be to get them to function at all, and being more aware of the intent of the design. I think that plus live streaming the last few years has me putting more time into unusual games that I wouldn't usually have the patience for if I were to play them on my own.

@@BurstError Wow that's really cool! I played through it a little bit this morning, but got eaten by a bear xD I'm really impressed with it, especially since it runs on real hardware! What language did you use to get this running on a gameboy? You didn't code in assembly did you? All the projects I've worked on are for the Sega Master System in assembly, which uses almost the exact same CPU as the original gameboy. And do you have a musical background of some kind? I find that writing music is the biggest roadblock for me when it comes to game design. I'm by no means an artist, but if I take my time I can make pixel art that I'm proud of, but writing songs is on a totally different level

@@Bofner thx for checking it out! I used GB Studio to make it, no code required. Very user friendly program to make basic Gameboy stuff. And I have been making music for many years, although that was my first time writing anything for Game Boy. That same software also includes decent tools for making the music.

Yeah. I don't think half the games people call horrible are really that bad. Like because of AVGN there's tons that claim Simon's Quest and TMNT are bad games when they are good albeit flawed games. Like a couple romhacks can easily fix up Simon's Quest and make it great. When people call something bad, most of the time it is just hyperbole.

Really can't stand what IGA did to this series. I get people love those games (and I do too, as it happens) but even he admitted he was fundamentally changing everything about Castlevania and what it was to suit what he wanted to make. And that's just it, you say the 64 Castlevania is an outlier, but it wasn't. Beyond the whole it being 3d thing, it's 100% in line with the original series. It's also the last ever bit of media, in any medium, to be made in the original style and idea of what Castlevania was. Everything about it, from it's gameplay ideas/focus, it's atmosphere, visual style, all of it is very reminiscent of the original trilogy (particularly the original game). Whereas SotN is nothing like those games. At all. Because it wasn't meant to be. It was a spin off title, that Konami didn't really care about, so they had total creative freedom to make it totally different. Yet somehow, SotN became the blueprint for almost all Castlevania media released since, whilst a game that actually resembles Castlevania is deemed an outlier. It's really pretty ridiculous. Talking about closed mindedness, the later reboots like Lords of Shadow and the Netflix show (which are both themselves very different from the original Castlevania titles) somehow get blasted for changing the lore or the style of the series when compared with the "source material". The source material people are referring to? The IGA era games that changed everything about Castlevania and didn't remotely resemble their source material. You couldn't make it up. It's just an utterly insane direction that this franchise went in. It's a real shame that the 64 titles ended up being the last breath of Castlevania before it's name got adopted by a series of reboots/soft reboots that weren't remotely interested in being what Castlevania was to begin with. (I like the IGA titles, LoS and the netflix show, but doesn't change the above at all)

If you ended up having some fun with this title, it would be worthwhile to check out Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Imagine less jank, much smoother controls, and a similarly wild and varied stage selection. Just the first game though. 2 is weird and the DS version is not good
