I have a 2 phase motor in my collection, 180⁰ out of phase, 4 hots, and a chassis ground. Kind of holy grails in the motor collect circles.

Then you need better training, if a truck has two 12 volt batteries, to make 24 Volts, is that truck split phase DC?

@@elonmask50 do you tap the jumper between the two batteries to get two 12v circuits from that 24volt system? Look at what's happening at the transformer. The output, hot-to-hot, is 240 volts. Then there is a center tap "splitting" that single phase into two 120 volt segments with a "common" or "neutral" in the center. This is "kind of" done with 120/208, but you are tapping off the common between three phases at 120 degrees from each other. Making 208 hot-to-hot(delta), or 120 hot-to-common(wye). If you run a high leg delta on a 208 transformer you can get 240, but the transformer phases are not balanced. And if you center tap the three phases in a delta transformer, you get 104, or 240 depending on which hot and which common you are testing against.. so not very useful. Back to the 12+12 for 24 volts DC. Trying to center tap that will just make a mess since the batteries need to be matched and balanced.

Split phase is exactly what it is. A single phase with a center tap, "split" into two legs.

@@elonmask50 it's not called split phase with dc, because there is no phase. it's a center tap. you can consider the center to be 0 volts then you'd have + and - 12 volts, or the negative can be 0 volts and you'd have +12 and +24 volts

In Serbia, we have in almlst every home a 3 phase socket, capable up to 11kW. It is 230/400V at 16A. It is usualy used for kitchen stove, but they come hand for EV charger, welder, water heater, 4kW+ motor.

The electric ovens, laundry dryer, water heater here use 120, 203, 240, 250VAC. Industries get 208~600+VAC. Welders will run off of 230~250 since the max current is 125 Amps to a home.

I never understood why 230/240 isn't universally used. It's more efficient than 120/110 while being not nearly as dangerous as 400V. My dream home input would be 500A at 480V for a total of 240kW. Yes, it would actually draw that much current LOL.

Commercial and industrial use 3 phase in the US. High density residential can be 3 phase or as he described. Houses are as he described. Connecting to both hots gives 240V, used for all big appliances.

most homes in america have much higher kw supply. 320 amp split phase (single) 120/240 is available everywhere and lots of homes can take 3 phase, most small business have standard 480v/400 amp service.

Everything is based on potential. We use earthen ground as a reference point basically the zero in potential. When you ground at the center of the 240v winding you get 120v hot to ground but still get 240v hot to hot.

Looking at the incoming wire's of my very typical Dutch home. We have 3 phases coming along with neutral. Tapped of only a single phase with a 25A fuse(yes a fuse) which is typical for older dutch homes. Newer homes are fully 3 phase though older one's can be modified for 3 phase hookup, which entails redistributing the load's in the house. No need to pull new wires from the street.

_My_ old Dutch house (goeiemorgen buurman) ran on one single 25A phase. But when I moved in, they only had to change the meter and connect the loose terminals to give me 3 phase power for the garage, the induction hob, the cannabis farm in the attic, the s&m basement, the counterfit printer, the absinth still and the AC. And my house was really old-fashioned; for you Dutchies: with red and green wiring. Still, the cables were all there from the start.

You have 3 phase because of inline direct water heating. And single phase unlike murica and muricans (who occupy most of social media) because unlike them you have a reasonable supply of 220/230volts. In india ,ost houses have a max of 3 kw single phase supply at 230v and 50Hz as most Indians would balk at paying anything over 50 usd or 4000 rupees per month for electricity charges.

Absolutely, I’ve been having that same argument with people, including inspectors, since I was 5 years old. If whatever you are connecting has only two wires, then it is single phase, no matter where you get the supply from.

I found out there are some places that do actually use two phase power. The phases are 90° apart. The first self starting motors ran on two phase but it's VERY rare.

I had a friend who own the machine shop, all of their equipment was 8 phase. They had a three-phase motor spinning an 8 phase generator so they could operate all their equipment running the same torque from very low to very high speeds. Most of it was antique equipment, old stuff taken care of last forever.

I guess so, and I wonder why. Three phases into every home appears to be the smarter solution to me. With more and more heavy loads, i.e. heat pumps and EVs the advantage will be more obvious.

Two phase power isn't 180 degrees apart. It's actually 90 degrees separated. The residential 240V system is called "split phase" as they're 180 degrees apart. Thus, 2 phase is extremely hard to generate nowadays since you can't pull it from a three phase supply. I suppose two-phase is around because AC motors on single phase require tricks to get them going. Fran Blanche (@FranLab) did run into a two phase building in Philadelphia.

Two-phase power can be derived from a three-phase source using two transformers in a Scott connection: One transformer primary is connected across two phases of the supply. The second transformer is connected to a center-tap of the first transformer, and is wound for 86.6% of the phase-to-phase voltage on the three-phase system. The secondaries of the transformers will have two phases 90 degrees apart in time, and a balanced two-phase load will be evenly balanced over the three supply phases.

What phase means, is where within the cycle, the waveform starts at a given point in time. For 3-phase, one of the waves starts on a rising node like the sine function. The next phase starts with a time delay of 1/3 of a cycle, and the final phase is time delayed by 2/3 of a cycle.

There was the two phases in quadrature thing at some point. And there's a type of transformer that will get you that from a 3 phase supply. But if your power is in quadrature, you've got some insanely old equipment.

Fun fact: The alternator in your car is also a three phase generator. It is converted to DCa by diodes. Why three phase in the first place? For the same reason the utility company generates three phase - it is more efficient.

Might be worth talking about WYE, Delta, and wild leg three phase. Depending on the equipment being run, sine wave angles and transformer types can make a difference.

You are so correct about very little two phase around anymore. Here in Philly & heard Detroit they still have some old buildings with most often 5 wire two phase. The center of both windings are center tapped to provide a neutral wire where there get 120 volts. Have not worked on two phase in over 40 years. Have wired in several three to two phase changers to supply two phase for old equipment. Recently tried to see if anybody still sells new two phase 4 fuse 30 amp safety switches. Nope. Last one I purchased back in the 1970's was more then twice the cost of three phase three fuse safety switches. Back in the 1960's while in Vo Tech school helped my electrician dad install a 2,300 volt Scott T transformer that put out both two & three phase 240 volts in a hundred year old factory..

In Germany every household gets 3 Phases 400 V for Boilers Electric Ovens and some old electric heaters. And for 230 V applications we just use one phase against neutral (grounded center point of star transformer). To prevent uneven loads, 230 V circuits are evenly distributed across all 3 phases. And that's pretty cool!

Likewise in Slovakia, you must always lay a supply cable of at least 4x10mm2 Cu or 4x16mm2 Al (the length of the cable also depends) in every new family house, even if you will use only 1 phase, which is possible in agreement with the distributor. (and often each floor in the house is connected to a different phase due to the equal distribution of power) But the most common connection to houses is 3 phases 400V with a 25A circuit breaker. Electric heaters are no longer used here, but houses in the villages have many appliances with large motors - from water pumps to circular wood cutters with 5kW motors, heat pumps or, in the future, cars. Somehow I can't imagine similar machines connected to 1 phase 230V or 115V.

We have a 240/480 split phase arrangement in some rural supplies in the UK. Can also be used to supply higher power demands than single phase but it still can’t start an electric motor!!

It is because it is an American system and much of the world does not do it that way. And with good reason. Because it is crap. It's a fudge, a crude workaround to get around a low nominal voltage of 120 volts. In a normal 3 phase system with a nominal voltage of 120 V the phase to phase is 208. In Europe it is 400V. America realised at some point their nominal voltage was far too low, but rather than address that particular problem, they came up with a solution of split phase, where you can get 240 volts out from a 120 volt system. It is one big fudge. It's rubbish. Europe doesn't do it like this, because it does it right, right from the get-go. US: 208 volts 3 phase. Europe: 400 volts 3 phase.

The confusion arises because of the centre-tapped transformer connected to neutral. As you say, the two "hots" are in phase with each other because they are the two ends of the same wire, i.e. the secondary winding on the transformer. But each of those hots, when referenced to the neutral, are 180° or out-of-phase with respect to each other - they have to be, because the reference point (the neutral) is connected to the centre of the transformer winding.

Indeed, the entire debate is a semantic one that depends entirely on the definition of a "phase". Look at it through the eyes of an electrician and it's a single phase supply. Look at it through the eyes of mathematician describing sin waves and there's clearly two that are 180 degrees out of phase.

How does high leg open delta three phase work. We have it all over the place here in south Florida and I can’t use it on my 3 phase VFD’s due to the un level voltage phase to phase.

Open delta with two transformers will work for motor loads, but it stinks for three phase rectifiers for a high powered broadcast transmitter, for the same reason brayden has trouble with his VFDs

So, thanks to 1 hard working robot in disguise - homes having access to 120 and 240 of potential makes sense :) but what about at work where there are several other options to pull from? They say 120? 208? 277? what the heck is that all about? Are the 3 phases transformed to 92-104v apart depending on where you tap?

To put it simply and not go into too much detail - transformers can turn any voltage into another voltage depending on how it's configured. At work you'll see the high voltage switchgear commonly stepped down to 600 or 480 for 3 phase (along with 277). The using a center tap transformer similar to what Chris described, you can get more single phase connections for 208, 120, or basically anything else. That was a super high level overview, hope it helped!

208 is what you get if you connect to just two of three phases on a 240v hook up. 277v is two out of three but when its at 480v. This is just what I know it has to do with phase timing.

On a 120V/208V 3 phase transformer, you get 120V when connecting to one of the lines and neutral, and 208V when connecting between two of the phases. 277V comes from a line to neutral connection on a 480V 3 phase transformer.

That's a really good question. It's actually a bit difficult to explain without graphs at least for me.(Not a good teacher) If you were to have one phase AC you would draw a sine wave on a graph representing the voltage. The center line would be 0 volts. If you were to have two phases 180° apart. You would draw two sine waves where the peaks are the opposite of the trough of the other wave. If you were to have three phase AC each phase is 120° apart. The slightly lower voltage comes from the fact that when you put a load across two of the three phases they don't perfectly oppose each other. So that would make the max potential between the two slightly lower even though they both operate at the same voltage. Hopefully that explanation was somewhat good enough to get the point across. There's an electro boom video explaining this because his apartment has a lower voltage because of it. There are some other good KZfaq videos But I can remember that one off the top of my head. If it's still not clear I can try to explain it more. Now that I think about it that might actually make a pretty good short. He would definitely do a much better job than I did.

It's mathematically equivalent to two voltage sources that are 180 degrees out of phase, which you might think should be 2-phase by extrapolating the idea of 3-phase. We don't call it 2-phase for historical reasons, since that term is spoken-for by a now-obsolete system. 2-phase has a 90 degree phase shift instead of 180 degree phase shift. Early motor designs did this, so at least one phase could always get the motor started. For modern split-phase motors, we use a capacitor to produce an almost-90 deg phase shift, to do the produce a quasi 2-phase circuit to the windings temporarily, and then shut off the starter winding after it gets up to speed.

My dad owned a machine shop for ~35 years. There were neighbors down the road. Rural area, so not much in the way of zoning restrictions. He had a 3-phase generator we called "The Beast." Basically just a big gray box that would wind up and run providing 3-phase for all the machines. We would turn it on and off every morning and night. The larger lathes would cause power to dim at the shop and along the houses downstream. As electronics got more sensitive, the neighbors got tired of the constant voltage drops and finally paid to have my dad's line separated from theirs. So, they paid to separate the lines, and my dad got three phase without needing The Beast. After that, there was no more dimming in the shop when the lathes came on. Dad retired and later passed away. My mom sold everything in the shop except the huge air compressor and The Beast.

Yeah, too many people do not understand the distinction between center tap split-phase power and two-phase power. Two-phase power would also require 3 wires, but generally 180 degrees out of phase isn't considered a separate phase (and it depends on how you attach the probes whether you're going to see a phase shift or not anyway)

As a motor repairman, I have worked on American Electronics two phase M&G sets. Produced in the industry, for two phase equipment. I don't know how much longer, they will be maintained, but they still exist. Two separate phases, not connected together.

I once worked at a chem lab that used the same setup. The idea was to get 130 V phase-to-ground if someone should touch a live wire and a water tap at the same time, making electrocution a little more survivable.

One other crucial thing to remember is the neutral is referenced to ground. This is why the neutral in the ground wire are a bond together in the panel. At the transformer a ground wire is ran to a ground rod.

Over here in Germany it's standard to have actual three phase power. Many garages have a three phase outlet for high power applications like a table saw etc.

My grandpa had a machine shop growing up and he used a three phase generator to run them. When you wanted to run the three phase motor, you had to warm it up with a pony motor before switching it on. I forgot the pony motor step once and switched the 3 phase generator on without warming it up. Heard a big boom coming from the transformer. No power. We had to hide the setup from the power company when they came to replace the transformer

The ends are not really 180° out of phase. They are equal but opposite. I prefer to call that Co-Phase as out-of-phase implies time delay.
