Happens to me all the time. When meeting someone and finding out what they study or work in, I'm always asking "Oh, and why do you work in that / why do you study that?" and they rarely even seem to have an answer.

I've recently been dealing with a person in my life that likes to do the same thing you do and try to dig deeper into people by asking questions, probing questions sometimes. And im not joking, but most of the time it really isn't that deep and you have your answer right there where the person told you. Other times the person being asked doesn't care to go that deep into a question you're asking because it might be too personal. Or they may not feel like going that deep into that topic. So in that case it's better to still leave them be because they don't wanto to go deeper into that topic with you, but other people might. So i agree you should still be curious, but you have to also respect other people that don't want to got that deep into a topic you're questioning them on.
