Quincy Davis | Jazz Drum Qtips

Quincy Davis | Jazz Drum Qtips

Күн бұрын

In this week's lesson, I delve into the idea that it's not what we do, but how we do it. I discuss the potential controversy of providing "answers to the test" and emphasize the value of sharing knowledge and my own learning process. Always remembering that "it's not what we do, but how we do it," will help us pay attention to the nuances and subtleties of jazz drumming. Ultimately, it is essential to prioritize the process and approach to playing, rather than solely technical execution. Join me in this hopefully helpful rant:)

I'm 100 percent behind you with the language-based approach. When I enlisted in the Army band, back in the 1980's, I didn't know much about playing jazz drums. At the Army-Navy school of music (at that time), they used language-based instruction to teach jazz, which made it possible to get us all up to speed in as short an amount of time as possible. Phrasing was the primary concern will all instruments, but especially with drums. Comping was taught as a conversation between the rhythm section and the soloist. This made all the difference in the world to me. Keep fighting the good fight!

Couldn’t agree more- without getting into a rant myself, this is definitely something I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older/distanced myself from my experience in school. Learning to be confident in what you offer on the bandstand, learning to take accountability for you can do better, and learning to listen to others with love and respect are really (in my opinion at least) what it’s all about

This is well-timed. While recording and playing back something I was working on last night, I had a real, “Man, do I suck!” moment. Spent the next two hours (and will continue) working on correcting what was going on. A teacher told me a couple of decades ago always to record myself and listen critically to the results. I make my best progress when I do that.

Two things: 1st) right before this I was watching a Bill Stewart video and I was noticing the dynamics and phrasing that he played with were amazing. He wasn’t going nuts but he was on fire! 2nd) throughout this video I kept hearing Marsellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction saying “Pride never helps, it only hurts”. Have a great Thanksgiving! FP

Quincy, thank you for everything that you do for the Jazz and Jazz-Drummer Community! Could not agree more with the message of this video. Humbling yourself and constantly striving for improvement are what it's all about. So glad you're talking about this and passing down the wisdom. After going to school for jazz drums, I understand how important this is. I think that Thad got it right when we wrote "Mean What You Say"!

Excellent points. My biggest driving force is fear of showing my weaknesses. I know what they are and work hard to bury them. As to ego ,, if you act like your the best most players won,t enjoy working with you and will not want to in the future. When I was young and had important gigs I always had a roll of fruit lifesavers in my stick bag. At the end of the gig I ,d take a moment to evaluate my performance to decide if I earned a lifesaver. More times than not I didn't,t give myself the lifesaver because a fast samba wasn,t flowing enough or something like I was chicken and careful at the expense of good flow. I was a brutal critic of myself!

Great insights as always Quincy, for a long time I misunderstood not having an ego with not having confidence. Meditation, and books like "The Inner Game of Music" or "The War of Art" or "FLOW" helped me with that. One of the great things I like to do is to listen me back and do a small comment on my playing based on what i'm aiming to sound. First it was all "negative comments" but slowly the positive came in! And a lot of this is thanks to your content and Joe Farnsworth content!

I used to travel the country doing Magic Shows and I always told the up and coming acts that it is "Not what you do but How you do it." Loved the intro you played and I can pick out bits of Max Roach there etc, how would I learn without your amazing videos, I'm straight to the garage to try a new routine or break that you show, it my take me all week to work it out (usually much longer because I'm terrible) but it's fun!! Thanks so much Q for the inspiration and the insight and straight talk. It's why so many of us wait on these videos . On a tangent when I saw the title I thought the video was going to focus on the 'when' of playing something, eg it's fine to have a repertoire of vovabulary and phrases but what's important is when and where you employ them in a tune in a way that adds value to what everyone else is doing. Have you done a video on this? With appreciation and respect as always ✌🏼

Practice more (smartly), play as much as possible to gain more experience, and trust yourself. Don't second guess what you're doing. You're second guessing is getting in the way of the music. Everyone is in your corner and wants you play well. They are with you, not against you. So just play, listen back, assess, shed on deficiencies, rinse and repeat. You'll soon gain more confidence. @@drumqtips as 36-year old novice i really dig your philosophy and approach. I'm a lifelong musician who used to be mainly a guitarist with drumming as a casual hobby, and I'm the last few years it's basically flipped, and I've gotten really into jazz. I'm of the philosophy of "learn the rules to break them" ie don't dismiss tradition til you've learned how and why. Thanks for the concise breakdowns and wisdom...as a millennial who really cares about carrying on the torch, i really appreciate what you do. Thank you 😎

I forgot the titles of video. I registered all personal data upto the card detailes and paid. I just wanted to know what I should do next. If I actullay haven't paid and misunderstood the situation it's okay. Toshi,

I have a huge ego... but when it comes to playing drums... that ego goes out the window. I know I'm not good enough and frankly, I fantasize about being the best. I watch something like Whiplash and desire that restlessness. The difference with me is that I desperately want to do the work, but I'm not developing enough. I write this as someone who has played for years self-taught (rock drumming) and has had a deep lust for jazz drumming, but can only play the basic swing pattern. I have no fucking clue how it is everyone is counting this shit. How anyone does this shit. I'm clearly at the very bottom of knowledge and I'm tired of being there.
