It's time to leave my cabin, guys. Frozen pipes, sad plants, and low firewood stock!! Woohoo!!
I know it's been a lot of back and forth, and deciding to stay, and contemplating leaving, and working out the struggles of living in the cabin during cold weather, but I officially have gotten too antsy to stick around any longer, and am excited to jump back into the open road.
I plan to be on the road until spring, so it'll only be a couple months - likely coming back around mid April feeling renewed and excited to dive back into projects once the weather is nice again.
I hope you guy's will come along for the van adventures, but I understand if you were more invested in the cabin progress 🤗 hope to see you in the spring in that case ♡♡

Some advice for snow days in the mountains. 1. Don't use water after 5PM from the sink or pipes. If you have to then leave the water on afterward. 2. Have a reserve of water and firewood stored up for emergencies. 3. Park where you will always be able to get out during heavy snow days. 4. Snow pile-ups cause a lot of roof damage to old cabins. Find something to keep the snow to a minimum. They make roof snow scrapers. 5. Insulate the pipes with pipe insulation. 6. Always put the male stovepipe down into the female pipe to prevent creosote from dripping down from around the edges and falling on the floor. 7. Frequently clean rusty old stovepipes with a wire bristle brush to also prevent creosote from forming in the pipes.

I agree that it's not ideal, but eh, wood stoves are hella expensive. You can get second-hand ones (as most are, obviously) much cheaper sometimes, but one in good condition at a good price can be hard to come by. It's even more difficult if you want one that can cook decently, like myself, and isn't primarily for heating. That being said, I do agree she should look for alternatives. Honestly, this wood stove would be *ideal* for something like a workshop (something that gets occasional use but isn't in the home), so she shouldn't just chuck it. Hold on to it, but look for something better in her price range. The big issue with buying wood stoves (that aren't new or specialty refurbished) is that they ACTUALLY are widely available, in a multitude of varieties. Finding out about their sale in the first place is hard enough, but it's mainly geography and how spread out the owners are. You might find the perfect one, but it's a state away. And the cost of shipping something like that is overly prohibitive. So you have to either look local, or make an investment of time and money to go get it.

I second getting rid of that death contraption "wood stove". With the damper it can become a carbon monoxide danger, causing anxiety, brain damage and possible death. Also, uneven heating cause condensation to form and mold to grow, causing depression and illness if not carefully monitored. Living in a cabin all alone is difficult, but not impossible with good stuff that works well. Using wood as heating during winter requires lots of wood chopping. A wood chopping machine is advised. And get a cat for getting rid of the mice.

Seeing icicles in a faucet is a nightmare and I was expecting to hear that hissing sound of water spewing from the pipes when you got it flowing There still cold be an undetected leak somewhere so you'll want to check the entire system for leaks when you return in spring. Also, I'm curious if you drained the water tanks, and opened the faucets after the power was turned off? Any leftover water in the system will freeze and even without pressure it can cause damage. i have a cabin in the mountains and this is at the top of the checklist when shutting it down. Your skills and knowledge are impressive and are inspiring to those who find DIY too daunting. Even the pros make mistakes and finding solutions is part of what makes the independent living experience so rewarding.

A lot of work goes into prepping a cabin for the winter, I just did so in October to a fully functioning cabin. It was a take down though because we can’t get to it in the winter due to the amount of snow we get. I couldn’t imagine prepping your cabin currently where it’s at for winter..during the winter. I think you’re making a smart choice to leave and come back and renovate it in the spring. It’s the most logical way to go about it.

Have you tried using steel wool in the holes they come through and using glue to seal up the hole? Also, insects and mice don't like the smell of peppermint. So, you don't have to have mice as a room mate. Out peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle and spray it all over the house, in cracks and behind furniture. Have your porch sealed up too. I see those gaps! That's where their getting in, right? So apart with peppermint oil and use that spray stuff, that you see on tv, when the ad keeps water from coming into a boat. But their is calling you and spray to fill those gaps, then cover it over with sheet rock and paint it. You did an awesome job fixing up the cabin.

If you find the holes the mice are coming in, bung it up with wire wool, mice can't chew through that
@pschloegl5260
@pschloegl5260 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I’m sorry to tell you this. You really do have to kill the mice. Once they know the way in they will always find their way back to the cabin and enter once again. They get smart and learn to avoid your traps after a while. They can fit through holes the size of a pencil. It is a serious health hazard. Fresh mouse waste can carry Hantavirus which is fatal. They follow scent trails they leave for each other. As a result mice tend to follow the same pathways of travel. The most effective solution I found was to buy the yellow sticky cards and place them as a barrier across those areas. If you don’t get this under control they will nest and it will become a serious infestation. Also wherever you find small areas of entry you can stuff steel wool. They can’t chew through it so it is a good way to plug them up. I hope this helps.

Regarding the anxiety thing, usually, when I feel like that I take a 30 min to an hour break to step away from the problem. When I feel calmer, I sit down and write a list of all the things I need to do out on paper. It helps to put things into a better perspective for me. Like maybe I had 20 things to do, but they're all small things that won't take much time. Or maybe I had 10 big things and like yeah I had a valid reason to be stressed. But regardless of how big or small my tasks were, seeing them all laid out in front of me helps to plan when I can do them and prevent them from flinging themselves across my mind at moch speed every minute of every day and causing me anxiety.

She was doing that, did you not see the icicle on the faucet? At -20c, even running water will freeze - given that the cabin is largely uninsulated, you would have to stoke that stove every 2 hours to keep things from freezing at that temp. I even have a drain on an outside wall that has to have a heat tape on it!. I hope you will drain your pipes if you decide to take off! (Haha, that is what I wrote before I got to the part where you told us you had done it!) Otherwise they might break and you could come back to a flood. Eeeek! Try a soapstone stove. They're expensive, but they retain heat a lot longer. Look for a wood stove that burns 24" logs. The longer the wood, the longer it burns. In the dead of winter, we load our stove every 4 hours, such as 12am - 4am - 8am - 12pm - 4pm - 8pm. Once you get the hang of it, it's not that inconvenient. During the winter, the upstairs is 72 degrees and the downstairs is 68 degrees. Indoor thermometers also help you to know when you need to load the stove. During the winter, we spend more time upstairs, because the floor is heated. Our home is 2000 square feet. We only have the wood stove for heat.

Hydrants had to thawed, stock tanks full of ice had to be beaten open etc. And we also had wood heat. The fire was out when we woke up and it was out every night when we came back home.
