Within the last year alone, Mikko's hair has grown so much! Though I AM happy about that, it has been a real challenge to maintain her hair at the length it is now; especially ever since she's been avoiding water. The first two days were a near mess, but we were able to find some products to help make things easier-going.

Mikko has beautiful hair. I'm a stylist who has taken children and adults with disabilities into my shop. The first thing is, I didn't have the parent or guardian in with us. They will over act. Second, I use Mane and Tail detangling spray. Do wonders. Stop allowing her to control the situation. Sit her in a high chair. Detangle into separate braids loosely. Then shampoo her scalp. Once completed, spray more detangler. Job will be much easier 😊

THIS IS THE PERFECT CONTENT!!! I'M A STYLIST AS WELL FOR OVER 25 YEARS. I DO THE EXACT SAME THINGS. BUT THE BUGGED OF THOSE IS STOP LETTING THE CHILD CONTROL THE SITUATION, AS WELL AS SITTING HER IN A HIGH CHAIR. PRODUCT USAGE IS IMPORTANT BUT SO IS ESTABLISHING CONTROL OF THE SITUATION. GENTLE BUT FIRM !!

My son has long curly hair, that he insists he wants to stay on his head, and he acts like I'm killing him combing it. He's mixed so it's not that bad. All I have to do is spritz it, comb some leave in conditioner, and moisturizer, and dry it just a little if I have to wet it to work the conditioner in. The crown of his head does not like to receive moisture. But anyway, yeah, he acts like I'm killing him. Combing the hair on his head that he insists on keeping 😅

Imagine going through emotional trauma , then someone forcing more trauma on you - that’s what hair washing does to kids with autism or SPD it causes extreme pain in their brain - imagine your head pounding like it’s going to burst and I keep banging your head more saying just put up with it. So every parent with a child with autism to SPD or other difficulties - have no choice but to work differently at a slower pace and be gentle in these kids, yes it’s difficult, and time consuming and frustrating - but we don’t want our children damaged for life. Please understand that’s why we call them differently abled in the first place

As an autistic adult still trying to heal from the trauma of showering as a child, some of the comments in this video ranged from insensitive to lowkey triggering. It doesn't matter how many times you explain, people will just keep saying the kid is just spoiled and needs a firmer hand because they still see it as just being defiance or a tantrum. People just don't understand what sensory processing difficulties feel like, and what forcing your kid to do something against their will (especially if they feel like you're hurting them) may do to a child, and the long-lasting impact it can have on their life even after they have long grown up. I was raised by a very invalidating family, and seeing you guys going out of your way over and over to try to come up with creative solutions to do what needs to be done while being respectful of Mikko as her own person and trying to accommodate for her needs has restored my faith in the goodness of people. The world could use more people with the level of empathy and compassion that you guys have. I know all of these challenges must be exhausting at times, but you are at least trying your very best, and putting her needs above your own, which is far more than I can say about a lot of parents and educators. Seeing Mikko being able to wash her hair almost uneventfully for the first time has legit brought tears to my eyes. I was just so overjoyed and proud of the three of you. When she splashed water on you, it made me laugh out loud, and the laughter mixed in with the tears. I would never expect Mikko to actually have FUN during hair-washing day. For a split second, she was no longer an autistic toddler struggling with sensory overload, she was just a happy-go-lucky toddler being mischievous and playful like all toddlers should be. It also felt like she wanted you to join in on the fun! I also thought it was hilarious that the whole time she was eyeing you like a hawk to make sure you weren't using the other brush. She will keep you on your toes because she won't be that easily fooled! 🤭 I know that she still has a long road of challenges ahead of her as she grows older, especially when she is old enough to go to school, but these little victories feel absolutely monumental. Well done, all of you!

You should try washing her hair with the twists in. Wash 1 twist at a time. It will keep it stretched and from getting as tangled. Afterwards it will make detangling easier and quicker as its already sectioned.

Washing your hair in twists is not something you should be doing on a regular basis as you are not getting the inner strands, thats unhygienic. Hair needs to be down and free when washing.
@catchyusername3083
@catchyusername3083 6 ай бұрын
@@kleedasantos3236 Absolutely not true at all. Just as much soap and water can run through the hair in twists as if the hair was loose if you do it properly. This is common practice among naturals with way kinkier hair than hers. I guess you're one of those people who think locs are dirty.
@kleedasantos3236
@kleedasantos3236 6 ай бұрын
@@catchyusername3083no, I don't think locs are dirty. Locs are locked all the time, the inside strands aren't getting dirty. Free hair on the other hand is constantly getting dust, debris, etc in it and so it needs to be Washed. If you twist the hair you're trapping all the dirty strands in the middle. Some hair types depending on porosity can get wet all the way through, but others can NOT. And even the hair that can is still not being cleansed 100%.

When my three girls were little they all had waist length hair very thick and they were tender headed. Part her hair in fourths and one fourth at a time use a large tooth comb starting at the bottom then work your way up to the scalp. Repeat each section. I never used a brush to detangle plastic or otherwise. It pulls. I used the large comb on the blower dryer parting smaller sections within the four sections. It straightens the hair while drying with amazing results. Wishing you both the best

The way she acts has less to do with her developmental issues and more to do with your inability to be strict with her. She's allowed to make life difficult for you all unnecessarily.

Yep i agree with you. Because they should've had a routine with her from the time they brought her home from the hospital. And set boundaries for her from infancy. Then they wouldn't have such a difficult time with her now.

BINGO!!! Autistic or not, BOUNDARIES ARE NECESSARY!!! She acts out because she knows they're going to coddle her and give in to. All that body throwing and tantruming, and outright misbehaving is because there's no discipline. As long as she is controlling the situation and they're doing what she wants she's fine.... she had to learn there are things that have to be done and in not waiting months to do then.

okay but if something is triggering you or hurting you, won't you react? Trying to be respectful, all I am saying is that in this video something or might even be the water is triggering Miko, and also having autism makes her see or say things differently, remember she is also a toddler, so a lot of challenges are going on all at once! Which is also hard on Miko as she doesn't feel comfortable, the best thing to do in that situation is calm her down so in future she will think that whatever triggered her is nothing to be scared of the disciplining should get stricter when she is in skl because of the rules they have. I hope you understood!☺

You mentioned before that Mikko has a high tolerance for pain but brushing her hair brings some sort of discomfort. Try to limit the number of times you pull at her hair and stroke it. Once it is detangle move to the next step and finish as quickly as possible. To wash her hair, make a pallet on the kitchen counter and put a pillow under her knees. Washing her hair this way is making her anxious with water splashing down her back. She is now cold and wet. Grabbing her is causing her even more stress when she is trying to escaped her discomfort. She needs to be made comfy and kept dry. Other kids might find that little tub fun, but if someone took me to the hair salon, and my hair was to be washed this way, I would not at all be happy. Knowing her anxiety I would not continue to pull and stretch her hair. Her hair looks beautiful but so long sitting and all the pulling and painful detangling is only making her more upset and anxious. I would say maybe you could limit the number of braids and the amount of time doing her hair.

My daughter has been using these products in my granddaughters hair from the beginning. She is now 10 yrs old and her hair is waist length. I thought it was inheritance, but maybe it's Carol's Daughters. Walgreens keeps it on sale and open 24/7. Great job parents. She is beautiful.

I wouldn't put her through that I'd cut it first ,poor thing you can always fix her hair if it's shorter ,she doesn't have to have long hair less stress for both of you

I'm curious. What's the purpose of straightening her hair with the blow dryer? It seems like you're able to style it in its curly state just fine. Her hair is super cute in the twists.

Not sure but if the sensory issues are the sore spot for Mikki…the sound of the water etc, wouldn’t it just be adding to the stimulation by using a blow dryer for so long ?
