Nyarlthotep wanted us to free Dagon and Cthulu for...some reason. Because he's a bro? Idk. I'm pretty sure plot wasn't something the developers were overly concerned with. This whole game really just felt like an excuse for them to show off the models they animated. To be fair, they are VERY nice models. Very nice visuals overall, really, but they should have just made a short film.

Great to see you make lovecraft content! Big up to Lydia for surviving motion sickness. It’s a shame lovecraftian games always go so hard on the mythos with little buildup, you’re just some dude and you’ve got an elder thing talking to you and big boy Cthulhu personally chucks a boat at you after a villain monologue. My favourite bit was definitely the walking obelisk. Oddly cute and ties in to the Dagon story as well. Chase scenes are always wank.

While I absolutely love the various lovecraft references in this game, they sorta skipped out on one of the most fundamental rules when it comes to Cthulhu: Never have Cthulhu directly address the protagonist. The entire idea of why Cthulhu causes sheer madness is that he's simply so far above us as a being that we are effectively less than ants to an entity of that level. The madness of Cthulhu is the realization that beings of such immense power and scale exist, and we have absolutely no hope of influencing them, let alone actually hope to stop them. Ideally, Cthulhu actually wouldn't be much of a direct threat to humanity as a whole, mostly just because he'd likely barely even notice we were there, let alone give two fucks about us. We aren't even worth the consideration to a being that god-like. Again, they'd see us as less than ants. Would you ever directly decide to address an ant and speak to it like you would another person? No, you fucking wouldn't. Even in a situation as specifically forced as this one (ie, the machinations of other godly entities like Nyarlethotep guiding it) it's not like he'd be bothered to speak to you directly. If anything, he'd just address Nyarlethotep himself and not even really see you as an actual living being with enough of a brain to actually converse with. Thus, why Cthulhu can basically NEVER be adapted properly in video games. Video games make you feel important, and part of the larger machinations of the universe, which is the polar opposite of the dread existential horror that Cthulhu and other lovecraftian gods represent.

@@leetri Sounds pretty boring and he is located on earth, why doesn't he see the benefit that humans potentially provide? When I think of cosmic god boy, I don't think of "city builder/dweller", so I suspect it was humans that trap him there as well. Seems pretty silly to just ignore them when you have nothing better to do. And its not like humans don't notice ants, and its not like humans are ants, we are several lvls of "sentience" above every other animal on earth, and have the aptitude to build, invent, destroy, research, w/e else a god may need us to do. There is just no way we would be left unnoticed, even by a god, imo. Just my thoughts, I understand the point of showing off how immeasurable Cthulhu is and how insignificant we are, just doesn't make much sense if he is trapped somewhere on earth, against his will, by humans I assume, and doesn't see the benefit of them, to the point where he doesn't acknowledge their existence.
@shxynee
@shxynee 2 жыл бұрын
I myself have specifically chosen to speak to animals and insects like I would with other humans so... that point of yours doesn't hold water. Though you're right, Cthulhu - or honestly, any and all Cthulhu/Lovecraftian lore - cannot be adapted *"PROPERLY"* into any other medium like a game (and IMO even movies/shows), and even other writing besides actual Lovecraftian writing - but even then it's still not done *"PROPERLY"*. Properly, key word, meaning capturing how it is all supposed to be incomprehensible and nihilistic and no one can understand any of it and it's all for nothing because big unimaginable gods will just literally destroy everything at the end, yadda yadda. To create a Lovecraftian game, the developers must and should take any and all liberties and creative freedoms they want to create their own story and version of Lovecraft horror. Otherwise, it will just feel like a crazy, difficult to follow, nonsensical, weird in a bad way experience - which you might say is how it is supposed to be, *but that's not fun nor does it make for a good video game*. For me, I WANT to experience these Lovecraftian gods and learn about them in such a game. Fuck, if my character is supposedly something akin to a chosen one or whatever, I'd want him to have dialogue between a god or two. I'd want to experience Lovecraft, not just immediately have my character go mad or die, or have one of the most important or big characters within the lore just make a one second appearance and then is gone "because it's so above humans" or whatever. Plus it seems to me in every single one of these Lovecraftian games - some entity or greater power influences a human or humans to do their dirty work and release them and other gods and otherworldly powers. So, humans have some importance obviously. If humans didn't have any importance, then what would be the point in creating a game base in Lovecraft and having your character be human? They apparently have no relevance, right? At least to Cthulhu. I'm sure - like in this story - if Cthulhu was awoken by a mortal human and that mortal human was holding some sacred, extremely powerful artefact that no human should be able to hold, he'd notice and address it. Also, there are games and a game can have you NOT feel important or have that "larger machinations of the universe" feel. It's doable. You could even do it with a Lovecraftian story, albeit you the player and the character then would not really experience much Lovecraftian stuff since all the important and big stuff would be happening without your character being involved in the slightest. But there in lies the issue - the dread existential horror that Cthulhu and other lovecraftian gods and lore represents - supposedly. If that is the case, and it is looked down upon to change that for your game or own story, then what would be the point of making a game? Your character is just going to die at the end - right? Humans and the universe loses because it's destroyed or whatever - right? You can't do anything to stop the events - right? Can't influence the gods or otherworldly beings at all - right? The story is already written and known basically - right? It's just going to have some twists with original characters made by the devs put in for the game but then end in a very predictable way - right? Well, that might work for a very small niche of people. However, most people play game to have some influence in what happens in the game based on their input. Most people play a game to have fun, enjoy the experience, even "win" - whether that being winning a competitive match, or winning in a story. Because they do want to have that feel of importance, of wonder, of curiosity, of power, of feeling, of fantasy. So, at least for me, if Cthulhu can apparently never ever ever ever ever speak with the protagonist or another human in a Lovecraftian game's story because there's this supposed rule dictating that, then... frankly I don't really care for the story then or Cthulhu. Seems pretty boring. I'd much prefer a story that builds upon the lovecraftian world and characters and allows me to have influence somehow someway over the events of the story, and possibly in the end, somehow overcome the evil and monstrosity and existential dread horror of Cthulhu and the rest - or fail to do so, depending on my choices in the game and whatnot. That sounds way more fun, and it would enable the character and the player to delve deeper into the Lovecraftian universe - which these games rarely ever do really, at least in any meaningful way. I'm often left wanting after watching Tom and friend play one of these games.

The intro music to the scene reminds me of a TOOL song and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Right in Two maybe?

You should check out Stoneshard, it’s a cool rpg that’s pretty difficult. Might be cool to see on the channel

Daily reminder that Tom is an amazing person and to thank him for all he has done/will do - Day 625 OOO, this game was rather fun, shame it ended so soon. But had a great time watching and the Tom and Lydia dynamic is just great :D Ha ha XD pretty funny for Tom to go on about Lovecraftian lore with Lyds just sitting there XD Hmm, I would give it 6.98 Tabasco Sauce and 4 Tailpipes myself, but that's just me

I'm confused - is there an episode missing? The last one I saw ended with Dagon going for a walk and suddenly they're in a puzzle room?
