It wasn't banned for being too fast or too loud... The car won, because the of the rule changes for that year, due to skyrocketing costs and Group C cars going too fast. All the Group C1 were banned for this race, 787b was in C2 which was not banned. There were much better cars than crashed or had mechanical issues, because they were building new engines that were allowed. The car won basically on a fluke, with a transition between Group C and WSC/LMP cars, but the transition took a few years to complete. Watch Aidan Millward's video on this car.

What the purpose of racing at Le Man with FIA interferencing the rulebook just to ban Rotary engine stating it was an unfair advantage come on it only 2.6l for the 4 rotor engine where the rest of the cars were 3.5 litre or more V8, V10. But slapping the 787b with 200kg ballast because of what rule did they not follow begs the question. Rotary engine should not be banned as it could have gotten a chance at F1. The way I see it all cars manufacturers in Europe whine and cry at Le Man or any race category as they got picked on by Mazda because they were different this is where I give my biggest respect to Mazda for the achievement at Le Man as they deserved the win

the Mazda was so loud the journalist 2 miles away in their hotel rooms could tell the Mazda's were still running by just opening the windows in their balconies and listen for the howl of it going down the straight

Both Mercedes' were laps ahead until they both eventually broke down, one with gearbox trouble and the other with a fault I can't recall right now. The 787B wasn't really banned, as rotaries are still allowed in the FIA rulebook today. The engine wasn't tied to the 3.5L rule to bring prototype cars closer to F1. Plus the only reason it was allowed to race in '91 at all was because mazda pleaded, all so they could prove that the rotary engine was fit for racing in high-stress situations

It wasn't banned for being fast, it was banned because they changed the engine regulations. The only reasons it won are because they lobbied to be able to run without the weight penalty, and they just so happened to have better reliability than everyone else. It was more a case of being in the right place at the right time more than anything.

I love how in the very early 90s like within the first two years both Nissan and Mazda have two of the most famous cars ever made when it comes to racing because you have this beast and you have the R32 skyline dominating and being called Godzilla

The 787 wasn‘t too fast and got banned because of that. It also wasn‘t as dominant as people think. The car won, because it didn‘t break down like most favorits..

The 787B only won one of the ten races that year and they only won Le Mans because of the reliability issues from the other cars, they weren't banned for being "so successful' or "to fast and loud" the regulation change was based on the size of the engines and what type of engine and everyone knew about them before the season, the biggest advantages it had was that it was lighter and it just so happened to more reliable that day, the 787B was in the right place at the right time.

How can the Mazda be banned foe being too fast when it's victory at Le-Mans was mainly due to the Mercedes C11's ahead hitting trouble and even in its own domestic Japanese Endurance championship it was getting trounced by Nissan & Toyota.

Let me see... it wasn't banned but was the only car in the category that could not race anymore? Yeah, clear to me. It was banned. Just like the stupid rule that forced circuits to have straights no longer than a million kms, yeah sure, just say "LeMans", we all understood.

Le Mans is pronounced 'Le mahn' And no the 787B wasn't banned for being too fast, it wasn't faster than the competition at all and engine regs were changed the following year removing the rotary from eligibility and Mazda replaced the 787B with a car that fit the new rules. Gran Turismo has really screwed the pooch on this one.

There’s not many cars I think more of than the 787. Indeed, I once tried to buy one (and a 767, failing missing out on the former). However, the car wasn’t all that fast and I’m sure someone once quoted that it was 12 seconds/lap slower than the fastest runner. Anyway, good luck with the channel. Try to cover stuff that hasn’t been covered a thousand times before and the pronunciation of the English carmaker Jaguar is pronounced ‘Jag-you-are’, accept no substitutes. Mozda? Bloody yanks…. :) :) In seriousness though, keep going and best of luck with it!!
