Ciao! I'm back with more Italian phrases to help you on your vacation this summer in Italy or for those lucky expats who have moved to Italy and are trying to learn the language to make a life as a local. I've received a lot of comments from you guys asking for more Italian lessons so here is a little video to help you with one of the most difficult challenges in a foreign language - speaking on the phone. I've lived in Italy for many years but I remember back when I would get so nervous on the phone, writing out phrases to read from and then panicking when I got on the call and the person on the other end used a variation of a phrases that I hadn't heard before. I've tried to allow for this by giving you different variations of the same questions that you might hear when booking a table in a restaurant. Good luck! Keep going - the reward of becoming fluent and connecting with Italians will be worth it!!
Don't forget to follow me over on Instagram for daily inspiration from Italy (mostly!) to make you dream, learn a language, cook, travel, move to a foreign country, film, edit or pursue your passion:

Ok, now Kylie, teaching Italian this way could generate an income stream for you! I would absolutely pay for a series of Italian lessons done this way. And no workbook even. Students must write to learn! I am writing it all down now!

Thanks. I hadn't heard "recapito' previously... but, I tend to rely too much on my wife in this. We've also had luck getting tables by letting them know when we just want to eat and leave. Italians tend to assume a table will be taken well into the evening, but if you let them know you are interested in eating and clearing out, they'll often find you something.

Hi Kylie, I do really hope this new series will grow and bring more views: your energy, enthusiasm and sheer joy is so great and your cinematography beautiful. I really liked how you where undeterred “dalle campane che suonano a festa” and “l’areoplano” at the same time…. Your pronunciation is great: just one little point: I noticed you say “mezzo” and “mezza” using the "zeta sorda o dura” such as in “vizio” while it should be pronounced as “zeta Sonora o dolce” such as in “zona”. Keep on your good work!

I found your video by chance and I have to tell you I love the positivity you're transmitting!! Tip: an easy greeting that works any time of the day is "salve" (more formal than "ciao", perfect for booking a table). I always suggest non-italians to use that so they don't have to stress out wether it's buonasera or buongiorno or whatever haha

THANK YOU SO MUCH. So many videos or books fail to mention what the restaurant will say on the other line, I can't believe how many videos completely ignore what the restaurant will say. Only thing I would add is having the full mock conversation at the end without explanation.

Loved this. Vintage Kylie. I’ve been learning Italian for a couple of years now and have been living in Italy since February and I still managed to pick up some words and phrases I didn’t know such as un recapito and non c’è l’ho (I’ve been saying non ne ho una which just seems more clumsy to me) Keep it going Kylie, it’s great to have the old, Italian focussed, you back in the driving seat.

Another amazing video! Have you considered making a video only in Italian (with perhaps English subtitles) for us that already speak Italian but we need to practice? Some subjects that I'm sure would be interesting is perhaps maybe some of you sharing cooking stories, recipes with the locals.. Like how to make a good pesto, limoncello, tiramisu, carbonara.. Plus you see to have a blast when talking about food so I'm sure that would be popular among your viewers, I know I'd be happy to see that :) On that note.. keep living your dream and all the best!

Hey Kylie thanks so much for the amazing content which is so much more real life and useful . Are you able to do any videos for when in restaurants and you need to complain or query something like when they tell you to wait at the bar and you are waiting for ages and everyone is getting seated before you, or when you ordered something and it’s not correct or you are not happy with the food (or wine). Thanks so much again!

Hi carissima Kylie. This is another helpful and informative video you made of italian language. I suggest if you don't mind, to step up your Level of teaching italian and english by making more video of the grammar and syntax so i think you may have more subscribers who seriously want to learn some english and italian at the same time. Have you ever been to royal Palace of Caserta that is considered the most largest recidency of royal Palace in the world? In Caserta Campania region .if not come to visit my city where i was born and spent my childhood playing football and other game with my childhood friends in reggia di Caserta. Alla prossima. Take care and for showing your love and appreciation is for this country and culture. The government of italy should employ you as Ambassador of italian culture in Australia and around the world. You could be very helpful for our tourism industry .

When do you use ‘ma’ vs. ‘Però’
@topotondo828
@topotondo828 5 жыл бұрын
They are more or less interchangeable when they mean "but", (although I do think that però tends to be stronger in terms of expressing opposition to something or contrasting the two things) however, they are used at different points in the sentence. Ma can only be used at the beginning of the second sentence, where però can be at the beginning of the second sentence or at the end: "Ho molto tempo ma non voglio farlo." I have a lot of time, but I don't want to do it. "Ho molto tempo però non voglio farlo." or "Ho molto tempo; non voglio farlo, però" - In this case, when però comes at the end, you could translate it as "though" or "however": I have a lot of time, I don't want to do it, though. A fun use of "però" is an expression of surprise. "Ho superato l'esame più difficile dell'anno!" - I passed the most difficult exam of the year! "Ah però! Stasera celebriamo!" - Well! (or "How about that!") Tonight let's celebrate!

Wouldn't you say "ha" instead of avete if you're talking to one person; not plural?
@KylieFlavell
@KylieFlavell 5 жыл бұрын
Amanda Anima If it’s for the part about ‘avete prenotato’ I only included the plural version because most people seem to dine with company. But if you were on your own, they would ask you ‘hai prenotato?’ or ‘Lei ha prenotato’ for the formal. Hope that helps. Oh wait, you mean - non avete niente più tardi - that’s because you’re speaking to ‘them’ the staff of the restaurant rather than the individual personally. It’s like a restaurant says ‘we’re closed’ not ‘I (the waiter) am closed’.

@@KylieFlavell Right, when I ask questions to anyone who works in a bar, restaurant, or shop in general, I always ask questions using "voi" because I don't want to cause some sort of confusion if it sounds like I am asking the waiter, bartender, or salesperson THEMSELVES if they have something or are doing something.
