i was one of those people who (because of the military) had to speed thru my certification, then looked for a job in the civilian sector living in fear of being exposed for not knowing much. thankfully, they taught me most of what i didnt know on the job and were super patient. so dont be afraid to start before you're ready, if you land the job then you're ready and/or they'll teach you whatever you need to know.

I really appreciate Keith's honesty and his practical perspective. In my social circle, the common advice is usually just to get your CCNA and call it a day. But as he mentioned, it looks like everyone has the CCNA and pushing for ENCORE is potentially away to stick out. Additionally, something that hasn't been emphasized enough is volunteering or shadowing someone in the field. It might seem daunting, but I'm definitely going to give it a try.

At my old IT job there was a contact center agent interested in getting into IT. He approached me for advice. I spoke with my IT Operations supervisor and decided to allow him to shadow us for a month. After coaching him and him continuing to work with us on and off for 3 years he was able to get a entry level IT job at another company. While not the norm it can work, depending on the company.

@locool676
@locool676 2 ай бұрын
There is overlap between the two. Network+ is vendor neutral so it's not going to touch any of the specifics of Cisco CLI for IOS/NXOS/ASA/Cisco Secure. My 2 cents is if you're currently a Helpdesk tech or you're trying to get an understanding of HOW systems communicate with ports and protocols is study and complete the Net+. If you're specifically trying to get into a Network Technician role or your current org is heavy in Cisco And you have a fundamental understanding of TCP/UDP/Routing/Switching, skip the Net+ and go right for your CCNA.

So tough trying to figure out whether any career path will still be there in the time it takes to become proficient.

You shouldn't be spending 2 years in Helpdesk if your goal is networking. Use 6 months to understand the internal process and systems, take great notes, be vocal in meetings, then the second half to really show you want to be involved in networking. Communicate to the network team, demonstrate you can think through issues logically, take fantastic notes, and chat with them when tickets are escalated and resolved.

The cloud comment is huge. In our org, we have a dedicated cloud team who is constantly spinning up resources, and constantly need to get tunnels to our on-prem DC. There are no network engineers on the cloud team, despite us exclaiming that there should be. Even with the plan for one of those express routes in the new DC, there is always going to be a need for network engineering to build and maintain the roads the packets route on.

Can studying an A+ study guide covering core 1001 & core 1002 still help me pass and other materials. I accidentally purchased the wrong book and will return it if necessary. What is your advice?

It will cover like 90% of the stuff you need to know for the exam.

I too am finishing my bachelor's degree in Networking & Security recently passed my Network+. This video is helpful precisely to my level of knowledge. I too was wondering if a masters degree is a viable option [SANS Masters???]?

I've seen a lot of comments in here talking about the CCNA may not be worth it in the industry. I could not DISAGREE more. Just for frame of reference I currently hold a CCNP Enterprose with concentrations in Enarsi and Wireless Design and currently working on the CCIE. The industry has turned towards a jack of all trades when hiring for engineers and one of the biggest requirements and hurdles is a minimum of holding a CCNA. The industry is slowly phasing out System admins or Server Admins and the Networking world is absorbing them.
