Genius - I had a "No HDD message" and spent the afternoon taking out the HDD, replacing it with another spare I had. Both HDD's worked fine on my pc connected to the USB. So I came across your video after searching online for solutions. Swapped out the power supply and hey presto . . it works like a charm. Thankyou so much.

Great video, I discovered by chance that my Swann dvr was no longer recording and I couldn't access the hard drive. After watching a different video and hearing strange noises from the dvr I had ordered a new hdd but then found this video, checked out my power supply and swapped for a spare I luckily already had and problem solved. Thank you very much👍

Dont forget about changing the battery on the circuit board. Its easily replaced and its a cheap button type battery 3V C2032. I hoovered out all the dust and cleaned the fan with cotton buds then changed thus battery and boom it worked. No one on these videos seems to mention this battery and its a cheap easy fix. Thx for vid tho

Thank you so much for showing me the importance of actually checking my power supply first! This solved my problem as whilst the original power supply showed 12V it couldn't boot up the device but the replacement could. All without having to take the machine apart .Thanks again. So grateful!

Mate, I wouldn't have thought about the power supply at all! You can't take anything for granted! I replaced my HDD because my first one had appeared to have failed.. but when that one failed within a short amount of time, I thought it was too much of coincidence. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You certainly have helped a lot of people 👍🏻😎

Thank you Internet friend! Add me to the list of people you have saved the day for! Recently my DVR lost all video signal, I somehow worked out it was power supply issue and purchased 2 new 12V transformers thinking that the main unit's PSU was not far off dying as well. 6 weeks later I find myself in awe of your video, and I had a spare 12v Transformer ready to go! Thank you again!!

Thanks mate, that solved the problem for me. I work in IT, so i'm used to dealing with stubborn kit, but i'd never considered an undervoltage PSU. Normally, if the kit fires up, then the PSU isn't the problem. Every day is a school day... :-)

Brilliant!! Thank you so much for posting this! I thought my problem was a failed HDD, as all else worked fine. I am not very electronics savvy, but am willing to learn things, so I will often look online for a fix. I read somewhere that it was often the power to the HDD on a Swann CCTV. So i put on a separate power supply for the HDD, and hey presto it worked again. I thought that the problem was the power supply on the main board, not the thing that powered the whole box! Now i have seen your video i will try the more simple solution, changing the main power supply transformer! As others, i did not think these little boxes ever broke down! Thanks again!!!!

Just wanted to thank you. My error was No HDD and even when I swapped the HDD for a spare I had lying about, the same fault was there. I'm a DIY (Destroy it yourself!) expert, so I thought the unit was goosed and going to cost me around £300 for a replacement. When I did a search for what would be a good upgrade for a Swann DVR 4780, your video popped up. I've no tools and couldn't use them if I had, but I scrabbled around and found another 12v power plug. Swapped it over and voila! Sorted. Swapped out the 'new' HDD for the original one I'd taken out earlier and I'm well chuffed. Thanks very much again for your very helpful video ;0)

oh my goodness i can’t stop laughing 😂 at your DIY (“Destroy It Yourself”) comment because i have the SAME non-luck luck!! the replacement power supply trick fixed my NVR from rebooting but the system isn’t recognizing that a hard drive is attached! i can’t even re-format the HD because the NVR doesn’t even register that one is attached. This is so unnerving!!! this cheap/junk power supply power supply issue seems to be the case with ALL makes and models of security systems. if the original poster has any clue why my HD (neither the old one, nor the new replacement HD) are being recognized by the system i’d sincerely appreciate any suggestions. right now i’m just frustrated. thanks so much!!

Thanks for the video. My Swann DVR9-4200 hard drive would not give me playback. I clicked on Device and then Smart and it showed nothing. I thought about buying a new DVR and then got to thinking about replacing the hard drive only over a period of days messing with it. After seeing your video, I tried a new power plug and everything worked. I never dreamed it was the power plug because I still had video on all cameras, but no recordings under playback. Smart under Device shows all the information now and says "good" like its supposed to. You saved me a lot of money and I really appreciate you posting the video. Bless you!

I rarely leave comments on videos - but I have to say how staggeringly helpful yours has been. YES - it was the power supply. NO - I didn't suspect it, because apart from the box reporting 'no hard disk found' it appeared to be working OK. YES - I had gone to the trouble of swapping the disk for a known good one. The offending PSU was relatively new, having been changed a couple of years ago as a result of the box constantly attempting to reboot but never fully powering up. Again this was difficult to diagnose (but somewhat more obvious to assume 'power') because the PSU metered 12V on no load. Going to ditch the 'fag packet' Swann adapter and source something like a 5A laptop adapter. Thank you again for your help.

NVR-87082H, very similar main board to the unit in this video. On connecting power, No HDD activity at all, PWR an LAN lights blinking at 2 second intervals. Checked switch mode power pack, 12v present. Checked for 12v on PCB at the back of the power receptacle. No voltage. Hooked up my bench supply and she fired up straight away. Switch mode plug packs are proving to be very unreliable. Luckily, it's only a $20 fix for a system that cost me $800.

IMPORTANT SWANN OWNERS READ THIS , your set up will come with 3 power adapters 2 are rated 2 amps 1 is rated 1 amp You need two adapters for the cameras and one for the DVR So god only knows why the one you need for the DVR is rated at 2 amps , leaving a 1 amp and a 2 amp to power the cameras , no wonder the DVR keeps failing on a 1 amp adapter , Swann label which is for which please Moral of the story is 2 amp is for the DVR !!!!

Hi. very good video. Im wondering if you've ever experienced a Swann DVR fault where the video input is all wavey? I checked the cameras direct to a monitor and thats fine. Also the menu screens are crystal clear, so I assume its on the input side of the DVR. I've tried anothet powet supply as a quick fix but issue still remains. I'm guessing some sort of earthing or capacitor issue but any pointers would be great? Thanks, Dave

Hi, great info video. I suspect my power supply is doing the same - The adaptor is reading just over 12v but that's the disconnected output, not a reading from internal. i have a spare 12v power supply but it's rated higher than 2000mA, can I use it or do I have to keep to 2000mA. I think the other one is 2.5a, Appreciate your advise. Rich

Big thanks for that - I used an old Netgear adaptor, plugged it in an it's working fine. The trouble was it wasn't recording and when checking the drive status it was saying no drive. I also noticed the fan wasn't working as hard as it used to so I suspected some kind of power issue. Now when we look for the HDD all the info is there and the drive is recording once more. I feel Swann have sourced a low spec supply for these DVR's, the one we had was running fairly hot, I suspect it was a cost issue for them. Anycase I really appreciate your advice and the video which pointed me in the right direction. Rich

I'm on my second power supply now. The original Swann one blew up so that was garbage and the £30, yes £30 replacement that Maplin told me would be the only adapter to power the unit has now either blown up or the Swann unit itself has blown. Either way I can no longer monitor my home while at work so I'll never buy a garbage Swann product again. Never!

Hi, be grateful for your advice. I've got a similar problem with my Swann NVR. It's got the same board as the one in your video. I've got a Peak Electronics ESR meter and have checked the caps and all seem OK except one of the 220uF SMD caps which says leaky/in circuit so I removed it to test it and found the one leg just came away from the solder so I thought that was interesting. Anyway, tested it and tested OK so soldered it back in and retested. It gets to the Loading screen which goes blank and then does nothing. I've tried it with another HDD and get the same. I swapped that 1000uF cap with a 1200uF, closest one I had but still doesn't work. Can you tell me what voltages I should be seeing from the regulators? getting 5V1, 1V1, 1V4 & 3V3. middle two seem odd or are they references. HDD voltages are as they should be, 5V1 & 12V. I've found the same problem with cooling as you have, the system would just crash, I found the heatsink was excessively hot so left the lid off. If I can get this working again I'll have to fix a fan like you have there. Anyway, again, would be grateful for your advice, Thanks.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I'm assuming the video/cpu side of things is OK as the loading screen comes up on the screen. Again I'm assuming this is a bit like the BIOS on a PC then the OS isn't loading? As I'm sure you know, without a schematic it's a case of poking and hoping :) I may bin is as it's been flakey from new, not impressed with it considering how much it cost. Anyway, thanks for you help.

I've had a look at them and they seem to offer a lot more for the money and cross compatibility between cameras. That's the way I'll go, thanks for the advice.
