This is a quick chat about different ito types.. I have a few different types to show. Mostly Tsunami, Leather, and Silk. I talk about what I like and what I don't like about each.

I like the way silk looks after years of use, and I like how silk feels. A lacquered tsuka ito is nice too, nice and grippy and stays tight.

Treating the Tsunami with some Obenaufs LP would slow or stop the fraying. I used it on the fake suede on a Hanwei Raptor and it made it feel like real leather, it tightened up the suede and made handling it much better. It's the best leather product I have ever used, I buy it by the tub and use it on anything leather

i made a really ghetto improvise with my pruple heart synthetic katana by taking old school shoe laces and using that as the Ito, which oddly enough actually worked...

I like the leather look but the silk ito wrap thats had a couple of coats of lacquer is hard to beat . I never had the tsunami wrap but the synthetic silk seems to do good after being lacquered. silk is definitely my preference on ito wraps

I'm working on the design theme of a wakizashi where it would really play into it if I could get the Ito black with the red dots on it. Otherwise I'm just going to do black cotton or leather(ish) material. Most don't offer the black with the red dots as Ito per se, but most of them do offred it as sageo. So I would just tell the vendor to have them use that as the Ito. HOWEVER, I have no idea if that's doable because I can't tell from photographs if the cord they use for the sageo is the same type, as far as width and thickness goes, compared to what they normally use for the Ito. Anybody know if the two are the same type of cords? Also I saw a handle that had a battle wrap on it only the battle wrap part was the first half of it and then the last half with the diamond patterns. I wonder if the production line workers have the skills to do that. I would hate to order something like that and have it fall apart on me because the worker was improvising and didn't really know what they were doing.

Hi. Iv been buying HanBon swords of different steels,folded, tempered. So far I'm vary happy I would really like if you did a video on HanBon swords by swordsmith668. All the thing you have told us to look out for in semi custom swords HanBon seems to not be a problem. They are cheaper than other ebay sellers. They say that they forge their blades? So being that I know steel but not swords and what to look for I feel I've made a great first, second affordable buy. I would still like to hear your view. Thank you Matthew.

Tsunami is an odd material that you will not find on most sites. It is sold by fred lohman company and I am not sure if there is any more of it left or not. It has the feeling of suede but is a synthetic material.

Hi Matt , out of pure curiosity and for my own personal knowledge base ….what is tsunami wrap exactly ? I mean it’s definitely not a storm wave 🌊 so ?
@blacksnapper7684
@blacksnapper7684 Жыл бұрын
Tsunami (to my knowledge) is a style/pattern of wrap such as: katemaki, harimaki (I forget how it’s spell) and Jabara maki (which is my favorite but is also extremely hard to do). There’s a lot more and it’s kind of a rabbit hole……

I'm planning on rewrapping my old beater for a more "modern" style with black leather like a European sword's grip (spiral wrapped), but without the ito diamonds, I'm concerned about grip. If you had to pick between tsunami and leather to wrap a grip with, what would you have more faith in?

I hear some people say that tsunami is quite thick and makes the tsuka bigger than usual, so it kinda affects your grips. Your thoughts?
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 8 жыл бұрын
That might be an issue for the people that make the tsuka but I don't think it is so thick that it drastically affects the user. It feels good in my hand and I don't hold the sword any different.

what is better to go with for a first sword leather or silk
@originalamerican9396
@originalamerican9396 4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend silk. A leather wrap will break down and fall apart eventually unless you care for it with leather care products. I also recommend you get a sword from Swords of Northshire. You can create a custom sword on the website and the only limit is your wallet. They even have more options than what the website shows. Just email them about a catalog and they will send a pdf file I think that has all the options.
