greg77389 I am from the middle east. I actually wore armor in the heat of may. People placed bets on how long before I get dehydrated... the look in their eyes when I sat there completely fine at the end XD yes. It's hot af but not deadly as long as you keep drinking water.

As someone who had the same dream and got to wear iron plate mail... I wouldn’t describe it as cool, and more like exhausting. And I wasn’t even wearing the full kit either.

It's on the correct side. If you are right-handed, you hold your shield with your left hand and your sword with your right. So you put your scabbard on your right hip, so that when you need to draw your sword you can do it with your right hand. If you don't believe me, hold a long stick on your right hip and try to draw it with the right hand. (hint: you can't)

buahahah the Romans are literally the only and very weird EXCEPTION in that they held their scabbard on the right side. LITERALLY EVERYONE ALWAYS kept their sword on the left fucking side. Where the fuck did you come up with such A STUPID idea and how could you possibly remain so convinced about it when confronted. Jeezus. You sure you haven't confused your scabbard-on-the-back mythbusting a little? Because THAT'S where you can't draw your longer swords from. Yeah you still need to give the guy a big wallop on the head, multiple times to do any damage. Mate, BotN, HMB et al. fighters use weapons heavier than medieval with armours as light as possible, yet even concussions occur fewer times than in American Football.

@Abu Troll al cockroachistan gold bullets... Like anyone in their right mind would throw gold around. Now as for lead ones, from period guns yeah they can penetrate thinner plates (arms and legs). From slings not really. And in BotN people are hitting at full force. And the people who do it are usually pretty fit.

@@RockerMarcee96 Yeah but in battle of the nations you notice most of the contestants aren't using historically accurate maces or warhammers and the polearm heads have to be under a certain weight in order to not be crippling or lethal. Otherwise most of the contestants would be dead or severely injured by day's end. How else do you think contestants can shrug off a direct hit to the head with a poleaxe and not get knocked down or staggered at least?

Good that people know that even though armor weighs a lot, but when it’s evenly distributed across the body it’s really not that heavy and just takes a person in shape to be pretty mobile in it, the human body can take lots of weight if it’s all around the body.

Exactly. It's not like piling on a sixty or eighty pound rucksack - it's more like increasing gravity by about 40%. Everything is heavier, but it's all equally heavier.

It's not actually that heavy, at best it's only 20 kilos, or 40 lbs, the armor that you're thinking of is Tournament armor which was especially made to be heavy to keep the knight safe. Also knight's are a lot more mobile than you'd think even if you aren't a very athletic person. Also see 7:31

Heavy, or not much heavy - I speak for my personal experience, when I say: Me and my fellow mates use every chance to sit, lean or rest our feets in an reenactment battle when you are active for hours - even with less then 20 kg, mounted or on foot......old fashioned footwear sucks......^^ My buddy describes this situaton as some sort of crucifixion - lever your body on a horse with your feets at the stirrups, to get your ass rested - and feel intantly the pain in the feet......^^

Vadim Heldar technically for what I can see its almost 100% correct this video. The only errors than I see is than the mail isn't big enough letting openings in the armor , no feet protection , and the most important of all they are slow as fuck an good knight would put half of the armor without any help , but in general the video is correct .

by the 1600 armor is much more simple than full plate from the 1400's, very rare since most people used clothes (padded and leather) officers used the so called ''munition armor'' which covered the essential parts of the body (arms/chest/legs down to the knee) others just used a chestplate (mainly cavalry units) and helmets such as burgonets or morrions, some soldiers in the conquests done in america during the 1600 might have worn old 15th/16th century armors along mail and in some really rare instances scale

don't forget the full plate armour (the fully plated kind from for honor game) was so expsenive that most king couldn't even affort (damm you matpat)

jimmy cruble a knight or a king that couldnt afford, armor was bankrupt lol, it wasnt that expensive, the more expensive ones would be worn by kings or high nobles like dukes or some counts, the expensive part was the process of making it fit to the wearers body, mass produced chestplates and smaller parts were cheaper

The expensive part was the gilding and decoration. The cost of an armor could be multiplied by 10 or 20 just from embellishments.

Be Laine Gibs, Son. I would recommend the channel Knyght Errant, if you would like more information on armour. If you would like more than that, then the channels Blood and Iron HEMA, Pursuing the Knightly Arts, and Scholagladitoria, will suit your needs. (Also I suppose Shadiversity is a good resource for castles and other structures.)

Great video man! To clarify one bit for people who don't know though, when he said that that kind of armor wasn't used for foot combat, he meant that breastplate design, not plate armor itself. Some people have the conception that plate armor was only used on horseback, but a foot soldier's breast plate would simply cover the stomach more, and usually slope down like a pear shape rather than a mid section bulge as seen here.

yeah was thining that too. Matt Easton and Lloyd (LindyBeige) have made the point several times that swords in this time frame are side arms. EVERYONES main weapon was a pole arm

Just a few myths to bust: No you can't stab through mail ( riveted mail that is), it's theoretically possible but there wouldn't be a knight who was that strong in the 14th century, unless you're thinking of Half Swording, even then all you would do is give the knight a prick. Using a technique called the Murder Stroke would be more effective against this armor. Gambeson and any type of cloth is hard to cut so it's not too much of a problem and will do extremely well against blunt weapons, maces etc 5:54 not really a myth but the term for that is Brigandine if anyone is wondering

mail,scale and lamellar or just clothes but mainly mail like anybody else, also its very likely some nobles might have worn early plate armor before the fall and full plate armor during the fall of constantinople but dull plate was rare there

not even close, legionary armor was super outdated for byzantium times, the byzantines went for 3 kinds of armor generally, a colorful type of padding with padded shoulders, trousers and boots, then mail much like their western neighbours and lamellar(mainly for the chest,faulds and arms) and mail, their helmets seem to be generally conical or kettle hats too for the most part

I don't mean to call your video incorrect. but knights of the 15th and 16th century's seldom used shields as they weren't necessary considering the whole of your body was one massive shield. this allowed them to ditch the smaller weapons of the 13th and 14th century since they now had a second hand to use on their weapon. this gave rise to things such as the knightly poleaxes and longsword combat. although during battle the poleaxe usually was the primary weapon. aside from that, fantastic video!

Early 15th century knights still used small shields like the heater shield, the armour he's wearing in the video is late 14th-early 15th century so it's still correct for him to have a shield.

You are partially correct, but smaller shields were still used against halberds since halberds were effective against armor alone.

Ok, lets assume there is sufficient insulation to withstand up to 1 billion volts and 10's of thousands of amps between the plate armor and the knight. There isn't, but lets pretend. He'd still be engulfed in burning metal and would be cooked alive. If you still don't believe me, you should ask an electrical engineer, not KZfaq.

Also want to mention, while he is wielding a sword here, the arms used by knights were majority polearms or bludgeons with a sword as a sidearm. This was because the protection provided by plate armour made slashing attacks almost pointless, so only the hit from a high impact weapon (e.g. halberd, poleaxe, bec de corbin, war hammer etc) could actually deal any damage to the knight, but even then the padding and strong armour would drastically mitigate the effects of the hit. Plate armour really was the tank of the era.

Plate armor was frequently hand fitted( and hand made) and provided excellent protection and mobility. The higher end armor was expensive but medium grade armor (refurbished) was widely available. Good video. Your point about the significant difference between battle armor and tournament armor was well stated.
