You also see it in Luisa and Julieta who DO believe Mirabel about the cracks, but Luisa is clearly scared about losing her place in the family, and Julieta knows how toxic being obsessed with the Candle and the family can be as she saw what happened to Bruno. Plus, she's just more concerned for her daughter who she knows feels so worthless and like an outsider in her own family. It's more out of fear of being scorned and abandoned than out of not being supportive of her.

Mirabel _holding the family together_ actually makes sense. You can't just magically bond a broken family, you'd need understanding, and having no room would mean she can be there for everyone else. It's quite sad and challenging but I think it's for the best.

It also gives her a sense that she literally has “no place” in the family, and in many ways this is confirmed when she isn’t included in the photograph. But sometimes you have to be on the outside looking in to have genuine insight in the first place. To see the bigger picture, you have to be outside of it, in this case literally as well as figuratively.

Death by machete is worse than being stabbed. This death is definitely one of the cruelest and most gruesome in a Disney movie. I think what's different about this Disney movie is that it starts out where most Disney movies END. In the past, the whole _point_ of the Disney movie would BE Mirabel "discovering" that she doesn't need a gift to be special. But in this movie, she starts out already knowing that. So, what could be wrong? Well, it turns out the _positivity_ is wrong. Everything is cracking, and because everyone in the family knows they have to be positive, helpful, serving, and... _perfect,_ no one addresses the generational trauma. That's _SO much deeper_ than most of the messages of Disney's recent movies. They've all been obvious from the first ten minutes. Not this one. My family is healthy now, thank God, but for most of my childhood and teens, we were very much a "perfect on the outside" family, and we all felt the pressure of maintaining that image. My older sister couldn't handle it, so she rebelled and left, and when that was swept under the rug, *_*I*_* was swept into the position of the oldest sister. "Surface Pressure" and the plight of the two oldest daughters are so relatable to me: feeling like I had to hold everyone together by being the perfect and good and strong and Right daughter my parents needed. MAN, this movie got me. AND DISNEY GOT THEIR MAGIC BACK. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

I have a similar family, only worse, and not only that but matters haven’t healed, but in the past few years have completely broken. I am in the Mirabel position in every way, and I have always felt at some level that I had to expose the underlying poison that was killing the family, although in the past they seemed content to allow me to to stay the principal victim. Yet even before this film I could see that they were every bit as much the victims as myself, I just am not certain that even this movie can help them see, as they are still too invested in the belief in their superiority. I simply had the misfortune of being bitten by a disease-ridden tick as a child that deprived me of the option of being accomplished and perfect by becoming severely ill, but even so, I never stopped loving them, even though they didn’t seem to feel the same. You see my toxic father convinced them that I was lazy and pretending to be sick to get attention, and they never completely gave up that idea, despite diagnosis 27 years later with over 7 different diseases. Worse yet, I don’t think all of them came through the tick bite, but were passed down through my father to them as well, and during the past decade I have watched them slowly getting sick themselves with similar symptoms. And once my mother started showing signs of dementia that I know were caused by the same disease (now confirmed as antibiotics she was put on prior to tooth extraction have begun to alleviate the symptoms) they forced us to move out of our house and into assisted living, and barely have visited since (when our mother “was” unconditionally loving, which was the most heartbreaking, plus most of our belongings disappeared without our consent). I only pray that I can (and possibly this movie) can somehow bring light to our circumstances. That would *truly* be a miracle.

If you listen closely to the Bruno song you will realize he was never truly a problem for the family. It was just people couldn't handle the truth of their fortunes. He can't control the future, just see it. But people always need someone to blame so they associated their misfortune with him. If he had a bad vision, they would automatically blame him which is unfair. It's basically shooting the messenger. He was never a villain they made him out to be. It reminds me how people treat servers. A server simply puts your order in, they have no control how fast it will come out. But that doesn't stop people from yelling or not tipping the server if their food doesn't come out fast enough or to their satisfactory. People always need someone to blame.

that could probably be part of a potential broadway production of this film. the first thing that hit me out of the gate is how perfect this story is for the stage, especially that first number. sure, showing off the different family members' powers would be a challenge, but not impossible. in a broadway production, Camilo might get a song or be part of a mash-up where we see the rest of the family's issues regarding their powers (pepa's is obvious, Julieta could feel similarly to Luisa in that she has to carry the emotional weight of the family, and Dolores would have to deal with hearing things that can potentially be troubling as well as just generally overwhelming), and the conversation between abuela and mirabel at the end would 100% be an emotional one. Right now I'm guessing that because she had three children to raise on her own and she never went back to the river either because she never felt ready to do so or because she didn't have time to do so she wasn't able to properly mourn Pedro. And maybe she even started focusing on the family being 'perfect' and focused on the miracle that took place afterwards so that she wouldn't have time to focus on his actually being killed or on the fact that she still misses him and would've wanted to live a regular life with him and their children even with no gifts, no miracles and no magic. And because she hasn't been able to face that memory properly and hasn't been able to mourn him properly she hasn't been able to move on with the next stage of her life properly.

She’s my favorite too. Not only because I have a soft spot for asshole-y chatacters that turn out to redeem themselves or have more complexity than meets the eye, but also because she reminded me of my sister when she was younger. Always pressured by her peers and trying to get the perfect grades and fitting in with others so much so she became bitter towards my mum and I and we used to be absolute best friends before this happened. Then she realized who she wanted to be and became a better person again, becoming my best friend once more. “What else can I do?” Embodied to me how my sister is so free now and she can do so much! That’s why Isabella and her song make me so happy.

Some theories are that the reason she didn't get a gift is that she is the one that will take over the role her grandmother has. Being the head of the family that holds it together and she will not get the gift (the candle and her room) until her grandmother passes and she will take up that role. I like that theory. It fitts her character very well and someone has to take up that mantle when her grandmother passes. X)

"The miracle was for Mirabel." No- not exactly. When Abuela says she forgot who the miracle was for she meant that the miracle was meant protect the family- not just Mirabel. I feel like Abuela was scared to lose the magic because then she would lose the last thing she had of Pedro, her husband. Which is why she is always seen talking to the candle. That would explain why she was so strict and harsh since she has known for a very long time that something was "wrong" and had no one to tell it to which made her become like Master shifu- from Kung Fu Panda. Abuela was lost in her grief- and wanted to keep the "furious four" together but "Panda" appeared and turned out to be the very solution she needed since Mirabel will be the next candle bearer; just like her. Which means that Abuela will be dying soon... just a thought, don't mind me... (Abuela will be finding her "inner peace" 👀) And the whole point of the movie: you don't need special powers to fix things or be a hero. Which is nice Just wanted to clarify. EDIT: IS ABUELA'S DIED HUSBAND THE HOUSE. The thought just came to me, it would make sense since the candle appeared after Pedro died. "Abuelo is that you" 😭

After seeing the house fix, I actually was thinking that maybe the house is actually Pedro. Kind of like Monster House. He was the candle, and now he controls the house. That would explain the gift of the three babies. Someone said: Bruno: If only they knew they were gonna attack, none of the tragic things would've happened. Because Bruno's gift is to see the future/vision. The weather Aunt: If only there were rain, the fire would've been put out earlier. Because she has the gift of the weather. The mom: If only they could help the people who were hurt. Because her gift is healing people. If the house and the candle/miracle was Pedro, he must've based off his kids gift by the tragic incident.

I have come across a theory that suits more to what has been expressed in the movie itself. It is said that casita may be Pedro, but the butterfly that sits on the plant, as envisioned by Bruno, is Pedro, after the casita broke down. This works because that would explain the casita breaking infront of Mirabel, then fixing itself, since it is very capable of doing so, and this allows a secret conversation with Mirabel, revealing only to her of the fault in the family. And thats why he also signalled Mirabel as the butterfly to reconcile. Not to mention, the song played at that reconciliation, "Dos Oruguitas" also refers to caterpillars and butterflies, and Abuelo and Abuela were clearly the once being symbolized as caterpillars.

29:39 No, because the doorknob got me, too- It was so much more than just a doorknob. It was acknowledgement and acceptance. An apology and a declaration of love. I'm peruvian and I loved how they made a good tribute to all colombian traditions and put the yellow butterfly making refrence to the great colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez. I also, identify a lot with the theme of the movie, and that's what happens, because even though we are different countries and have our own traditions, as latinos we also have so many things in common. That's why I was so proud of Encanto, as I was with Coco.

One popular theory, which makes a lot of sense to me, is that Mirabel is meant to be Abuela's successor. I mean, think about it: she doesn't have a gift either, her gift is the candle. So, once Abuela passes on, someone else will need to tend to the candle. It only makes sense Mirabel would be the one to do so, and this was her trial to prove herself.

Your reaction was so wonderful! I enjoyed it so much, and I love this movie. What a beautiful story of intergenerational trauma, especially of immigrants and refugees. What you said about the front door being Mirabel's door was absolutely correct, and the animation backs it up -- if you look closely, Mirabel is in the foreground of the door, just like each other family member's individual doors. Every bedroom door has that character etched in more vibrant brights and darks, with the depiction of their power in lighter etching around them. For the front door, Mirabel is etched in the vibrant brights and darks, with her family as the lighter etching around her. So what you were saying for the whole movie was completely true -- Mirabel's Gift this whole time was being the heart of the family, her first door ceremony didn't work because it was the wrong door; her door was the front door and her room is the whole house, and she is the new candle. I theorize that she's meant to be the new head of the family and community after Abuela.

Especially coming from a family where this has been a problem, I think that the movie is a meditation on just how damaging conditional love is. A common phenomena in toxic families are the roles of “The Golden Child“, “The Invisible Child” and “The Scapegoat”; the first upholds the “conditions” of the conditional love the best, the latter the worst and the children in the middle feel like they disappeared. But the problem is that only one figure-in this case, the Abuela-decides what makes them “worthy” of love, and human beings can get this very wrong, and as a result multiple children are left feeling bad, “not enough”, defective, or worse yet, completely unloved. However, the ones who are praised have the terrible fate of becoming imprisoned by their role, because they know that if for just one second were they to stray from what is considered “acceptable” by the family, they would immediately suffer the fate of the scapegoat, or worse, as very often it is the Golden Child who is made to feel that the fate of the family hangs upon their success, and everything would fall to ruin if they were to fail. Perhaps what the movie is wisely and gently pointing out is that the fate of the family truly rests on the scapegoat instead, as only by embracing them as equally as the others by seeing each member as valuable purely because they are human, and therefore allowing every member to be truly themselves while being loved unconditionally, would the family find the wholeness, health and love that is the truest miracle that a family and home could ever provide. The mistake that the Abuela made from the beginning was to believe that she had to make herself-and her family-“worthy” of the blessings from the Miracle, that she had to become someone other than herself-to do more, be more-to justify it, and make her family do the same. It never occurred to her that maybe the candle and casita-although even more probably Abuelo-just wanted her and her family to be happy and spread their abundant happiness to the village in a natural, unforced manner. It never occurred to her that she and her family needn’t do anything more to justify the gift than be themselves. They would still be able to provide more to the village by virtue of their gifts, without ever sacrificing their freedom to be fully themselves in every way. Worse yet, the pretense of forcing herself to become more worthy also supported a delusion of her and her family being superior to the villagers as a result, even though the villagers showed their own genuine goodness at the end by helping to rebuild the casita. In order to restore balance to the family they had to have a child that represented what they “were not”; in this case, a child that did not have the defining “Gift”, who could help them see that they were never lacking anything at all, sadly only after she had endured great suffering and self-doubt as a result. However, in most families the acceptance of any child who does not fit in with the definition of what’s acceptable or lovable never actually receives the wholehearted embrace they truly deserve, in the way Mirabel receives at the end of the film.

Both act as glue for the household. Both want their familia more than anything. When THEIR heart breaks, that is when the house crumbles. Before it was one at a time. So abuela knew they were weak, Maribel SAW the cracks. But as they fought they broke. And yes at this point the house is the abuelo. His light was extinguished for his family. His wife forgot who HE married. A caring loving woman. The miracle is their love for the family. This i believe.

I absolutely love how much they explored the effects of generational trauma and the different roles that people fall into within a dysfunctional family. Abuela pushed down her trauma to protect her descendants but ended up hurting them in different ways as a result, Luisa and Isabella became the caretakers upholding the strength and image of the family while struggling under the surface, Bruno was the scapegoat and Mirabel was the forgotten child and also becomes a scapegoat. It also really beautifully depicted how it takes one person to set the ball rolling to break the cycle of trauma, but to heal the family you need every generation to work together to fix what is broken. 10/10 amazing movie.

The thing I love about this movie the most is how complex every character is. We are presented with common archetypes family members can fall into and it completely twists them to reveal the dark underbelly. Luisa is strong because she feels like she has to hold the family together, Isabela seems perfect because she has been held to a standard by the family and now feels stuck in a certain path (which would explain that "the life of my dreams" line that Bruno promised would be distressing, because living the life of her dreams would require her being imperfect) and Abuela Alma is stoic and harsh because she is dealing with the effects of surviving civil war and she's holding hard onto the one thing that went RIGHT in her life. It also reveals the light in the darkness, Bruno being cast out lead to him being incredibly empathetic to every struggle that the family goes through because he was right there on the side ready to take them in if needed.

I could only save myself and get out. I still tried to keep contact with my family, but little by little, I had to limit that contact more and more, because it hurt me so much to interact with them. They only saw the me that was happy, strong, kind, and selfless for them, but they would take all and leave me with nothing except trauma, depression, anxiety, and sometimes even suicidal thoughts. None of them are willing to see or hear or accept me as I am. I had to cut my family out of my life completely, and this is the most peaceful holiday season I've had in years. (And the magic then gave them the house and gifts, with the house itself being the father/Abuelo Pedro so he could still be with his family as they grew up.) Even in comments I haven't seen this mentioned but it makes me so happy! It's not outright confirmed in the movie, but everything that I've seen points that way, down to how much the house is shown to love them and protect them. I guess it could simply be that the house is just "alive", but that's not nearly as interesting or meaningful to me. Especially because then the father is also in the end of movie family picture, bringing them all closer together.☺

I commented this on another reaction but I think it'll apply here too 1) With Isabella, as I completed the film and watched many reactions I realised just HOW tough she had it. She was the first grandchild. The only one at the time that the grandmother had to shape and form to perfection after her kids grew up. The obsession with perfection and the expectation from the town was not spread out amongst the family members that we know now. It was all concentrated into her, her parents and the aunt and uncle. Her annoyance with Mirabel is basically that every moment she is supposed to be perfect (24/7 basically), Mirabel makes a mistake or is being clumsy which kind of ruins the expectations she has been conditioned to think is normal. Isabela basically has to even practice posing to satisfy her grandmother which is something that a lot of people could relate to. Like not being able to fully be yourself to make sure that your family loves who they created you to be. It's way too much on one person. You even notice that in her room, that was the first time she really let out her frustrations because she can't even show emotions that aren't "pretty" publicly. 2) The gifts didn't seem like things that would be practical or beneficial to the individual. They seemed like things that could be used to maintain the village and benefit the people. So even though Isabela's power didn't seem so special, it is beneficial for people once she actually figure out that it isn't just flowers but what she allows herself to create outside of what is perfect. Even Bruno power which in my opinion was the worst to get because of how people are, it helped the town and family in the end to maintain what they've built for themselves. Or Antonio's powere could help a lot with caring for the animals who ended up inside the barrier and maintaining the peace between people and animals in that space. 3) Out of all the siblings I felt the most sorry for Louisa honestly because even though it was funny that her background dancers were donkeys, it just shows that she's the mule of the family and town. Because of her physical strength, more is expected of her physically for literally EVERYTHING in town. The people got so spoiled by the Madrigal's powers that even the simplest things they should be able to do (catching their own donkeys for example), they put that on her. They don't even bother to practice certain skills as long as the Madrigals can handle it. She walks through town and all she gets are demands. Like the rest of the family, her gift is a never ending job but I feel as though her own is the worst (besides Bruno of course). 4) Even though I really disliked how the grandmother was treating Mirabel and basically everyone else with all of her expectations, her story is really just so depressing. Like on the day she gave birth to triplets (most likely a natural birth at home), she had to go on the run with her newborn babies and husband because of terrorism, then her husband dies to save the people. All in one day. That's way too much for anyone to handle in one year, far less a day. Then she has to basically be the leader of an entire community because the responsibility of that miracle was placed on her back. She never got to grieve properly or just be human. That's why I think she never saw any issue with how intense she was. To her she went through the worst so she's just giving her family what she lost. Not realising that they're individuals with their own needs and lives to live so they won't have the same obsession she has to maintain the community she lost. She doesn't see that she's harming the ones she love. She's a traumatised refugee that is too scared to mess up or else she'd go back to the worst moments of her life (losing everything). They handled generational trauma really well for a children's film. Also, the miracle was made from the grandmother's grief and pain. You see the difference in the storytelling from what she was telling Mirabel in the beginning of the movie compared to the end. She believed that the grandfather's sacrifice created the miracle because she didn't see what happened while she was crying. But you see the candle turn into a magical one when she screams out in pain. It was made from her but she never knew this. She didn't realize the magic was basically in her this entire time and it is also affected by her (and eventually Maribel as she is the next matriarch in line). 5) Whenever you have a few minutes to yourself you should really check out "Steph Anya, LMFT" on KZfaq. As a family therapist she did an amazing breakdown of the members in the Madrigal family and it was really interesting seeing how she explained their lives in relation to clients and families she has come across. It's a great watch if you're interested in that.

Loved this movie, though I wonder why Abuela was so hard on Mirabel even though she doesn't have powers either. The songs were great, and I loved the message of how people can hurt their loved ones even though their intentions were good. Thanks for the reaction!

Explain in the movie, the point was not someone didn't haven't a power, Abuela was worry this being a signal that the miracle was ending

Can we address the fact that Mirabel is forced to sleep in the Nursery . . . instead of them giving her her own room???

I love that this movie and Frozen have the same message and lesson even though they tell it in much different ways: your foundation can't be fear, it has to be something strong like love and acceptance. And the foundation for that magic is the non-magic person who provides that model of love, acceptance, and stability

This movie immediately went into my top ten (probably around 6/7 and this is coming from a 90s kid who remembers seeing The Lion King in the movie theater) I really love this movie. To me it feels like a cross between Coco and Frozen but both of those were about family primarily so maybe it's just the theme. I was also so happy that Mariano was just a good character because if he had somehow been part of those with anti-miracles it would have stopped this movie being as good. Anyway I am now subscribed to your channel so looking forward to what you bring next

I, honestly think Mirabel always had a gift all along. It looked like she never had one. However, it's likely it remained dormant since she was five years old. It didn't show until she was fifteen AND when the Casita magically rebuilt itself. Thus why when she first opened the entrance doors, that IS her gift and why that eternal candle is no longer there. And since the setting of this film is in Colombia and Peru is right next door, that makes the Madrigals next door neighbors to... Emperor Kuzco!

Minute 11:03, I like to think that Mirabel, while she was getting dressed again, thought something similar to Ralph's dream in Wreck it Ralph, when he got the medal of the heroes, only in Mirabel's case it would be something like this: She saving the magic of the candle, all her family cheering and congratulating her, Antonio, her favorite cousin, hugging her legs, her mother giving her several kisses on the face, Isabela giving her a simple handshake, Luisa giving her a big hug that breaks one or two of her cartilage, and Abuela Alma giving her a warn embrace telling her how proud she is of her and realizing her true value.

Poor Tia Peppa, she's showing strong signs of and anxiety disorder, especially in that she gets into perpetual cycles of feeling anxious about all manner of things, and then (and this is the key part that makes the cycle so insidious), she starts to become anxious about being anxious, and then anxious about that anxiety over her initial anxiety. This is a self- perpetrated cycle of skyrocketing worry.

She sure does! I feel like when she gets older and becomes the new matriarch, she's gonna wear a dress that is the same color of the candle with butterfly motifs stitched in.
