I greatly admire Ivan Lendl -- and Mats Wilander. Lendl's matches with Becker are classic. Probably Lendl, Wilander, Becker and Edberg are my favorite players from that era. They produced highly enjoyable tennis to watch.

Most people rate Pete higher than Ivan, but to me, Ivan's record is more impressive. Pete won more majors, but Ivan reached more finals, and way more semifinals. Ivan won about 300 more matches than Pete, and had a higher winning percentage (81.5% to 77.4%) Pete had slightly more weeks at number one ,286 to 270, but Ivan had way more weeks in the top 2, the top 3 the top five, and the top ten. Pete won 64 titles, Ivan won 94.

“The champion that nobody cares about”… I’m so ashamed of my country, how dare they infuse politics into an honest sports game like that!

Lendl never did another interview with SI again. Good for him. However Lendl has been a much greater and patriotic American than those critics that tried to belittle him back then.

I saw a match with Mac and Ivan at Madison Mac hit forehand and it went behind the net cord post for a winner for Mac and ivan exploded at the ump and the whole stadium went against him i felt for him. It was a disgrace of a crowd to do that been a fan ever since

The American leftist press didn't like Ivan because he was a conservative, anti-communist American, who liked the free market. He was a likeable guy.

It was because Lendl was beating the "non evil empire" brats like McEnroe and Connors which were 'good' by definition according to Regan.
@gentlemanjim4803 ай бұрын
Absolute bullshit. I was around at the time. Nobody even knew Lendl’s political views, he was disliked in the US by the right because he was Czech and they thought he was a Communist, even though he was an anti-Communist. Way to rewrite history.
@gentlemanjim4803 ай бұрын
Correct. The arrogant US players like McEnroe and Connors weee getting beaten by him and the Americans just couldn’t stomach it. Left and right were both racist towards people who had come from the Communist block, even though the very vast majority of people living under communist tyranny hated it and were anti-Communist.

That was Sports Illustrated, not "your country." I didn't like it either. SI lost a lot of respect by doing that, and rightly so. No question, Lendl is a true champion.
