Introducing Doris, a 2000 LWB Iveco Daily.
The plan was/is to turn her in to a massive camper van, but so far it hasn't gone well. Could this be the start of something good? Or the beginning of a complete nightmare?

Good luck with this, you’ll love it once it’s finished. Friends of mine literally just put a makeshift bed in there’s for camping and they love it! We spent the weekend down in Weymouth for the seafood festival and I was quite envious of them not having to set a tent up or take it down!! You could even hang a hammock or two up in there! Once you camp in a hammock you’ll be converted for life! :)

I’m already a solid fan of sleeping in hammocks. It was part of the reason I bought a van this big. The plan was/is to have a fixed double, but also a hammock as extra space or if the pitch isn’t flat. No bother on a wonky pitch with a hammock 👍 Thanks for the luck. I reckon I’ll need it 🙏

Your get there on the welding I was a pro after welding up a triumph spitfire replacing nearly every panel on it best advice start with a good gas mig Clarks not to back for the money and clean everything down you weld and take your time do a section and let it cool looking forward to watching the progress

Cheers Lez! It’s good to see someone converting an MPV. I fancied doing that myself. There’s an 806 around the corner from me and I always think it would make a good mini camper when I pass it. I think these projects have a way of dragging on. Looking at the rust on Doris I think this one might drag on forever!

@@MechitBetter ahh it ''was'' an mpv then due to parts theft we had to get a ducato/boxer/relay van 2 years ago, its been slow progress....but i have booked for august, a deadline may spur me on!!!!

Ah my apologies. I watched some of your 806 videos and assumed it was still going! Shame about the thievery 👎 But I suppose an opportunity to put your experience to good use in your second build. Where are you up to with it? You sound like a northern lad. Are you local?

Looking forward to this project! To pay a professional welder your talking big money. So I would say purchase a half decent hobby welder, practice on some scrap metal, and go in for the kill. Start at one end of the van and slowly work through it. Don't patch over rust, it will just return. Cut out all rust with a grinder, cardboard templates help with shapes. A light grind over after and a smear of seam sealer and jobs a gooden. Take your time and your get there. Good luck, joe.

And take it from me, don't buy a transit or a sprinter. They are the worst vans for rust! Iv had 5. And rust got the better of them all in the end.

Cheers Joe. I’ve got the welder and steel. I’ve even been saving all my cereal boxes for templates ha. The only thing I’m lacking is an ability to weld and a clue what I’m doing. In at the deep end I think! 👍

Doris is one big Gal, but she is hardy. Iveco do go the distance. learning curves are good+Adventures and resale are a strong plus. The Dodd says go for it

Because its on a proper chassis a lot of stuff is not MOT fail .

True, I think I'd get away with some of it. If I'm going to convert it then I'd like to try and do the best job possible before anything like insulation and furniture go in though. It just makes sense I think :)

@@InterceptorSC Good old Ciaran, he is a bit better at welding than me, but at best it's bodgejobbery. Doris has been sat under the trees for two years. I think I thought I'd magically become an awesome welder, or else make friends with one! haha

I had an old Volvo long time ago. I used rivets and fiberglass and epoxyglue. It worked out OK, even passed the mot🤭

Turn adversity in to opportunity... If Doris teaches you how to weld just imagine the potential bike projects you could have in your future. Everyone knows a Townmate would be more practical if you stretched the frame out a few feet so you can get more luggage on it!

Hoping that's the case. I'd love to get all this welding done, then like you say, the world's my oyster! I could have a 20ft Townmate with custom made trailer!

Have a go. Come on lads. Get a mig welder and a shit load of sheet steel, yer angle grinder and crack on. I got faith in you. But whatever you do, dont put hammerite on it. 👍
