The Ivies don't distinguish AT ALL between a 770 and 800. They really don't care. Once you're above 700 or so in each section, it's all about activities and essays. I got into Yale with a 2270/2400. These kids probably wasted so much time trying to get those last meaningless 30 points instead of doing what ACTUALLY could've gotten them in. Pursue your passions! You'll be more likely to get in. And if you don't, guess what? There are TONS of excellent colleges that might be a better fit for you.
@KoruGo4 жыл бұрын
The 30 points aren't worth retaking the test, but they do show that you were unprepared. I don't think you should be taking more than 2 SAT subject tests. Those should be for subjects you're sure you can get an 800 in.

Why should he need to be told? I wasn't told about the requirements for subject tests. Nor were any of my classmates. We all were 'motivated' enough to check Columbia's website and realize what was needed. I definitely don't think Mike was motivated. Howabout when he fell asleep in front of the TV and then bitched about having to take the SAT the next day? Or when he didn't make sure to be on time for his interview? Or actually care about doing well in school in general?

Plus, my parents would never dream of showing disappointment over a score or grade. They may show disappointment if I didn't try, but they never would say "not good enough." I'd never understand Asian parents, tell child to get 700 and then he/she gets the 700. What next you expect them to get 100 points more than what you said before to them. I'd record the conversations with my parents and then when they change up the story in the future, play the recording and just smile this is what you said before. --> Did this as a teen a lot. Your parents might beat your ass for doing what I did growing up record conversations when I felt this is gonna come up in the future again, but my parents couldn't slap me

I am in pure disbelief. I'm an Asian-American with two parents who went to Ivy League schools, and I was never treated this way. I'm very lucky not to have a huge pressure from them, though I wish I scored higher on my SAT Subject Test in Math II (570 is terrible for any school that considers Subject Tests). But I'm so amazed at some parents' reactions to scores in the 700s. To me as a Chinese kid, these parents' reactions makes me want to think that they're acting and getting paid to say that stuff.

At most nonelite high schools, there's almost no college guidance because the counselor to student ratio is so high. At my hs there were 3 counselors for 3000 students They not only had to advise about college but also needed to help students graduate, tell them how to dual enroll, etc. For a student in that environment, who's used to being the smartest person in the room, they have this subconscious assumption that no one is as well qualified as them (cont)
@catha8611 жыл бұрын
I am asian. trust me my parents are the same. They request high scores but when you archives them they will not be satisfied because they thought you wouldn't actually get there and should have asked for more. That's tough, Syvmana. The SAT isn't a good judge of intelligence because multiple choice tests don't lend themselves well to testing people who are unique thinkers and learners. And don't worry about the math section! It's the easiest to bring up because the questions are predictable. You could try doing an SAT math question a day through College Board.

@elizabethcoulson38908 жыл бұрын
+annabelllu That's the whole point of these children's histories and determination- they do it precisely so they don't end up struggling like their parents did. These poor people don't even speak proper English after decades lived in the US and they probably had to struggle like mad in menial jobs, to make ends meet. The kids are born in the free world, they have all the advantages of an educated society, their own rooms, computers and internet access, they go to great schools, two of them have their own cars, their homes are clean, food is on the table, clothes on their back...what else could they need to succeed? Perhaps joining Tinder in 9th grade, dyeing your hair blue and getting six piercings and two tattoos might be construed as the idea of a 'happy student' who's preparing for an Ivy League college. For them, it's hard work, determination and the drive to succeed- not through American Idol or sex tapes, but through their own efforts. I salute them and wish more kids were this driven, respectful, mature and ambitious to do something with themselves.

They could, after all they took the gaokao in China which you dont know what level of anxiety, stress and difficulty that is because many people tend to cheat and cheating on the gaokao could lead to 7 years in prison. Also, the gaokao determines your future in China and the streets and stores have to be shut down so it is completely silent for students to take the test. Also, during the gaokao they have ambulances outside in case of a nervousness collapse. Unfortunately, this test is mandatory for students going into college and since it basically decides your future, some students have been so stressed there have been many suicides over the years.

(cont) and of course they'll get in. This is particularly problematic if the parent didn't go to a selective school (or in Mike's case, college at all), and thus assumes that any college will accept their bright child. They tell this to their kid which inflates their assumptions about college. The parents don't realize how competitive admissions have gotten at the top schools, and the counselors don't tell the kids.

He also didn't know that 2 SAT subject tests must be submitted; maybe he thought it was optional. If someone had told him about all of the requirements early on, maybe he would have performed better academically and could have enrolled in SAT classes early on. He seemed motivated, but confused and out of the loop.

But again, he got rejected from Yale and Stanford. At that level of selectivity it's impossible to know who the schools will take, and who they'll reject, assuming the applicant has above a 2250 and excellent grades. If you go on CC so much you should know this.
