I am sure they also feel regret somewhere in their life and thus, making us do things. I believe this kind of parenting is not healthy and should never be encouraged. A kid should have the freedom to choose whatever they want to become in their life. This kind of parenting runs in the family. My grandmother used to beat up my mom when she was younger and she was also verbally abusive but they never realised it. So now my mom also does the same to me. grew up in HK, I hate the way HKers, mainland Chinese, or some other Asian parents raise their children. In my childhood, 80% of parents around me talked to their children in a very traditional way which includes scolding, yelling, blaming, abusing, everything was just too negative. But now I think things got better and may be half of parents are like that. On the flip side, majority of parents in China still talk to their kids without respect, as if children have no feelings like robot. I personally think that children need love, care, encouragement, company , and respect way more than just lecturing or threatening. I am treating my children like my friends, I joke with them, I talk to them with respect, I play and share my experiences with them. I praise and encourage them a lot too. I get serious sometimes only when they cross the boundary. They do feel motivated to learn things when they get recognized and complemented by me. When I was a child, I never got complemented by my parents, they would just said I was stupid and useless, and compared me with other better kids. What's the damn point of hurting your own kids' feelings I mean. Furthermore, adults talk to adults in very negative way too, I understand that human get jealous sometimes , but there's no point to cut someone's head to make yourself feel taller. Moreover, most of the teachers I met also verbally abused their students, they basically gave up on those students that didn't do well at school. Western values and cultures are just too different. In comparison, western parents would say " love you" to their kids almost everyday. But a big portion of Asian parents would not even say that to their children in the whole life. Don't get me wrong that Asian/Chinese Culture is all bad, they study hard, work hard, they are family oriented etc etc...But when it comes to parenting and teaching at school , it's just too cruel. Children with a fragile heart deserve more love, encouragement, patience, recognition and positive complements.

Affirmative action isn't perfect. It's supposed to level the playing field but it isn't because the system is way past broken. Asians are getting screwed for doing well, and it's mostly middle class or lower income white women that benefit from affirmative action. It needs an overhaul.

Alan Xiong I hate how African Americans get more points added to their scores instead of Hispanics. Hispanics deserve those points more
@SeychelleSunshine5 жыл бұрын
David Morales Why? The race insulting on this topic is so unnecessary. First of all, Hispanics and black people are on par with college statistics due to affirmative action, in some fields Hispanics are actually higher up smartass. In terms of test scores, Hispanics tend to score slightly higher than black people, thus the point advantage for black people which in most cases isn't significant enough to make a difference. The numbers based on population look worse for Hispanic students in some areas because there are so many more of you. Besides, affirmative action was invented to help remedy the centuries of negative impact slavery, Jim Crow and segregation has had on black students. While there is an obvious mistreatment of Hispanics (especially those from immigrant, non-English speaking, low income households), it is not on the same level of what we've been through systematically. Hispanics are actually benefiting from race equality initiatives more than black people. Let's not get into who's more "deserving" of these points. That's an argument you will lose.

Girl: "Dad!, I got 760!" Dad: "aw I wish you did better" I am Indian so we are very similar to other Asians culturally when it comes to material successes. This was me in the 9th grade when I showed my mom my report card full of straight B's and B+'s. My parents had moved to a school district with more rich white people so i would get a better education. So my basically spit on report card and started yelling about what disappointment I am and how they had to sell the house to move here. I would get around 80-87 on my exams and would get As on report cards the next semester and that still was not good enough! and from they were comparing me to they were right. The sons and daughters of their indian friends had straight As and not even A-'s. They were honor roll kids who were excelling in school, my parents held me to that standard when I knew i could never compare self them to those kids and never wanted to. It was all about pleasing my folks and not thinking for myself. I was close with my English teacher and told him about the pressures I had home, he even would send notes in report cards stating how much of good job i was doing and told my parents to appreciate the progress I'm making. Eventually he even got my guidance counselor to set up a meeting with my parents, they brought in research showing that pressurizing adolescents to excel and constantly telling them that they are no good is detrimental to their mental health. Anyways they did not care to listen to information on how to raise their kids by white people. They also made the point on how I am an first generation immigrant that does not have the luxury of being like other white kids, and that I have no family or relatives in America to take care of after they are gone. So unlike spoiled white kids I was going to have to provide for myself. I had my own issues and i'm not entirely blaming my parents as I do take responsibility for my life but this pressure to be brilliant pushed me downward spiral of mental health issues. Fast forward with legal issues and few stays at rehab, I ended having to drop out of high school. I understand that all parents want is for their kids to live better than they did, but this pressure to go above and beyond has great possibility of Back firing and could make the kid revolt against what their parents want. I've grown being ashamed of indian culture because of all this and honestly am not proud of my heritage. A great problem with our generation is that we crave material things so much, well that how we are raised to be!! dont just call us entitled millennials! your reap what you sow! which is our fucked generation of adults. Anyways I'm in college now and chose a liberal arts school full of music majors, there's a lot of hippies and stoners at my college that are living life one step at time and thats they way it should be

It's not certain you would make money off of video games, and i understand completely how the parents think. Asian parents come to America living a hard life. Taxes cost a lot. College costs more here than anywhere else in the world. People said America was the land of opportunity, it turned out to not be much better here. But they don't want their kids to live like they did, so they work hard, have their kids study hard, and have them go to a good school so they can make money and be happy in life.
@karlpants2757 жыл бұрын
J Ho but depriving them from things they want to do is just horrible. They should be outside, hanging with friends, or something they want to do. Obviously they should still work hard in school but there should be a balance. Are the parents really gonna waste their kids childhood? Like someone is gonna ask them one day when they're older and be like "man don't you ever just wanna go back to your childhood" they're gonna say fuck that shit cause all they did was study. I'm savouring my childhood for as long as I can because I only have a couple years till I'm an adult.
@jasonzhang77253 жыл бұрын
the problem is that after they are forced to live up to insane expectations, they don't live a happy life as adults. As a Japanese who was born and raised in Kyoto in the most traditional way, these american asian kids have it SO easy. My parents were 10 times stricter and harsher on me. I didn't have more than 3 hours of sleep a day from age 12 to age 18. I studied 18 hours a day then had to go to martial arts lessons. If i had complained even once my parents would have kicked me out of the house at 15 years old and told me to manage by myself and i would have never seen them again. And i am a man i had it easy, because girls had to study twice harder because their mothers wanted them to succeed while their father told them that all they needed to do was marry a rich man and have kids (and become slaves of their mother in law). Plus girls on top of studying constantly had to also take care of everything in the house, cleaning, cooking washing up, laundry, and on top of that piano and violin lessons, and in even stricter Japanese families had to learn the tea ceremony, incense ceremony, flowers arranging, calligraphy, etc, ... For me, the lives of these american asian kids feels like a spa. And i should not even complain, at least i am Japanese, if i were Korean, it would be even harder, because there the pressure is twice harder than Japan and the parents also starve the girls to death and send them to plastic surgeon to make sure they look like models, and boy are expected to look like GI Joes (which eventually completely destroys their self-esteem). Asian parents are insanely toxic and the most toxic thing of all is that love that parents have for their kids is not unconditional, you have to deserve it and earn it twith straight A's and impeccable behaviour and when you fail they will scold you and make you feel like you have shamed the entire family since the first ancestor and for generations to come and will tell you that they curse the day you were born, that you are worthless and useless and cost them only worries and money. In the west if a western kid bring home 9 A's and on B the parents will be thrilled and overjoyed and will maybe even get a present for the kid, when i did this, my parents scold me for 3 hours for not getting 10 A's and sent me to my room to study for a full month and brought food to my room, and i was only allowed to leave it to use the toilets, bathe or go to school. And the door was constantly open so that my mother could check on me all the time. When i am asked why the suicide rate of people between age 10 and 18 is so high in Japan, i always answer that my only surprise is that it is not higher.

Exactly! It takes more than grades to be successful. I'm a Harvard graduate and I'm studying law there. When I first got accepted, I was making A's and B's (mostly A's, maybe one B) my junior year all the way through my senior year, and a 1508 average for the SAT but I was very well rounded and got involved into the community. That's all there is to it. They aren't looking for the perfect-grade students, but students who are well-rounded.

What happened to Sophie is exactly the cause of why so many Asians have complained about being rejected by the Ivy league in recent days. They think it's a racial discrimination issue when at its core, it's just extreme tiger parenting that drove their chances to the ground. These schools don't just care about your grades and tests scores - most of them don't even require tests scores these days. They want well rounded students, meaningful extracurriculars, and demonstrations of leadership. Sophie could have easily gotten into several or all of these schools if she'd had been left enough space to be a normal teenager and explore different passions. Her parents fucked up her future, not to mention her mental health. I know some people will hesitate to qualify that as abuse, but I won't.

They didn't pressure me, they made me love learning and as long as I got an education they'd be happy wherever I went. They actually encouraged me to go to a good community college so that I wasn't stressed lol. They made sure that I had fun in my teenage years. I ended up going to Princeton and no I didn't have perfect scores or so many APs, I had my ups and downs, didn't do 1000 ecas. I was just passionate about one thing and I focused on that.

She didn't get accepted because of affirmative action. You have to let every race in and every moron in to make things "fair."
@rebeccawhite37317 жыл бұрын
Just because colleges have to abide by some form of affirmative action doesn't mean that they're letting in "morons". if you think about it logically, most colleges cost a lot of money and require a lot of fees, and most people cant pay them alone, let alone those from underprivileged backgrounds who are generally minorities (going by the populations who have a higher percentage of people living under the poverty line where African Americans, Latinos/Hispanics, and Native Americans are over 20% near 25, and Caucasians and Asians at around 10-12% federalsafetynet.com/us-poverty-statistics.html www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/acsbr11-17.pdf). And if those people can't pay, then you probably won't let them in, even if they are qualified in terms of grades and test scores. I feel that affirmative coxed colleges into giving more people a chance to receive an education who wouldn't have otherwise, and even with those lucky few, some colleges stop after they get their number since they are not obligated to do anything else, so its still not "fair"

I'm lucky to say that my parents always support me even when I fail. This pandemic was really challenging to me especially i don't know how to use gadgets that much. When the time comes where it was giving of grades, I was shocked to see a 75 grade in one of my subject. I cried because I was so scared since it was my first time to have that low in my card. I cried so much and trying to figure out how to tell it to my parents. Then my father entered and saw me crying. He saw my card and I told him I'm sorry for that grade. He just hug me and told me he was proud of me. He said he didn't care about the grade because he always see that I was working hard for my studies. And that is enough for him. My mom also told me that every one fails in one point in their life but she told me that they will always be there for me. I'm so lucky to have them.

It broke my heart when that girl didn't get into any of the colleges her parents were pushing her to go to, and she said "I'm not special enough" I understand that these parents are wanting the best for their children. But this obviously isn't good for their mental health. These parents I think forget that these kids have emotions, and they feel and think things, based of their parents approval, because she knows her parents are probably dissappointed in her that she didn't get into these schools. She thinks shes not special enough. Her parents need to drop the pridefulness, go in there and hug their child. If what they say is true, that girl went off and got caught smoking weed when she got into another college, I really don't blame her.
@jia20019 жыл бұрын
mya619 its Asian tradition and culture that's the way it is. And a lot of people die from this system in China, Japan and South Korea and suicide is normal there for young age.
@mya6199 жыл бұрын
***** It's apart of their society I understand that. I understand that students in a lot of these asian countries have a high suicide rate. It's just crazy to put that much pressure on the human brain like that. You can never have too much knowledge, but mental abuse is never okay, that stays with people forever. South Korea is actually one of the most top rated countries where students commit suicide. That's why there's such a high demand in becoming kpop stars in Korea, if they feel like they have talent and attractive, they can have a shot at becoming a kpop star, where they won't have to have all the pressure of the school system and their parents constantly pushing them.
@jia20019 жыл бұрын
mya619 The main reason I think is because the parents looking up to some other kids. Could be a relative, friend our college kids. Since they think wow he/she gets straight A you can do it to! NO the world doesn't work that way because not EVERYONE can get straight A, but Asian parents are to stubborn to understand and wont except this reality. Many Americans go to Harvard our Yale and at the same time they staying happy and have a social life. There is more then one way to succeed in life and I believe a lot of the Americans have that succeed. Americans ARE very good with motivation compared to the Asian parents.
@mya6199 жыл бұрын
***** Well I agree and disagree. Most Americans who are Ivy league students, have been pressured by their parents. But we just have a different method. Yes there is harsh studying, restrictions on a lot of things during childhood, and shelteredness. That's why when these kids go to these colleges, they want to party, smoke weed, and do other things that their parents forbid them to do when they were growing up. That's why they seem happy when they go to college. But alot of american parents aren't going to be as mentally abusive like a lot of asian parents. You will hear more support like "You can do it." "Do your best." " You'll get better text time." Those are the things I don't think a lot of Asian parents say to their kids. They expect their kids to get good grades as if it's like brushing their teeth or taking a shower. "You're suppose to get nothing but A's in all your classes. Why should I praise you for that?" I think what the flaw is, is rewarding your child to make them feel good that they accomplished something. But I'm not Asian, so I don't want to step over my line on what they should and shouldn't do.
@jia20019 жыл бұрын
mya619 You make up a good point. I am Asian Chinese so I know this from my own parents and other relatives and friends. The things you said that American parents they applaud their kids, motivates them and also encouraging them to work hard. Asian parents are very abuse specially psychological abuse. When you get straight A there almost never any good job our present because in their eyes getting A in every class is like breathing. American parents push their kids, but not the same way Asians do. The only time Asian parents realize when they gone to far is when their children s commits suicide. And that is way to late and I don't feel sorry for those parents they got what they deserved I feel sorry for their kids who died very young.

I, as an Asian daughter, am going to tell you something I wholeheartedly believe. I have gotten A's in all my classes and only one B in my entire 4 years at high school. I had 3 teachers and a cousin proofread my college essays. But here's the thing: I was never allowed to do any after-school activities because my parents didn't want me to walk home (I live 20 minutes away from school) and they wouldn't let me get a ride from other students' parents (because I'd be "bothering" their parents). Thank goodness, there were during school clubs I was a part of but I was never able to get any volunteer hours done. So when I applied to college and went after top schools like Stanford, Northwestern, and Columbia, I was rejected from them all. Luckily my essays and during-school clubs were good enough to get me into UC Irvine and UC San Diego, but I have a great suspicion that had I been able to do after-school activities, I could have gotten into an Ivy League.
@visi56123 ай бұрын
My parents would not let me walk home because it's a dangerous world out there. 20 minutes away is far for a walk, especially for a girl. I believe their reasons for not letting you do after-school activities were justified. I did my other activities on the weekends. If I had a daughter, I don't care what school she went into, as long as she is alive and healthy. There are a lot of bad people out there, and a lone girl walking down the streets is easy prey.
@xcassandralittlex7 жыл бұрын
I felt so bad when the girl saw her results after her second time taking the SAT's and was legit jumping for joy at how proud of herself she was and couldn't wait to tell her dad. but nope. still not good enough😒 bruh...you have her constantly studying all day everyday besides when she's showering or sleeping. she even has mad books out while she eats dinner and to top it all off her social life is just completely non-existent. she obviously tried her hardest and that should be enough. dude needs to stop trying to live his dreams through his daughter and cut the poor girl some slack. if I were him I would be proud enough that she really gave it her all and would let her have a few friends sleep over after SAT's to celebrate. he's just an asshole.

There are 2 type of parents, those who would prefer their children to grow up kind than smart, and vice versa. Also, schools aren't everything. The child's effort are all that matters. I remember my mother telling me stories about how she grew up in a very small house in Mexico with a dirt road in one of the poorest colonies. But She studied a LOT. But still had around 6 hours of free time each day. She eventually went to a poor Mexican university. Today, she works at Intel and gets paid over 20,000 $ a day living in a big house. Schools aren't everything, it's effort.
