The wood needs lots of solventsto soak the oil out. There are epoxies which will nend the crack. Most of the old Stevens need cross pins epoxied in to support the crack. There are fluted pins made for the purpose. Another popular repair/upgrade is to install a sleve in the stock if I recall, and it's been a while. The hole for the bolt is about 1/2 inch and the bolt smaller. This looseness strains the stock on fireing. Look around various sources for a steel or aluminum tube. Epoxy or, Acraglass, this tube into the stock, installing it slopy wet. This strengenthins the hand grip area a lot. It goes from under the bolt head and does a close or contact fit on the threads on the reciver. You can enlarge the hole slightly to get the pipe or tube to fit. The bolt an tube should have a very tight or snug fot. Restored and properly carefed for it should last another hundred years!

Looking good, I do the same vinegar pvc pipe barrel soak. I ended up with the same gun and an 1873 Charles daily side-by-side 10 gauge in the late 90s early 2000s I bought a rummage sale for 90 bucks for the pair. I sold the Stevens like yours for 45 bucks five minutes later it was really rough in the stock was half missing along with the receiver, locking up super loose. The Charles daily I just restored finally three years ago….lol. I’ve shot a double bearded turkey with it since with black powder hand loads.

Use citrus stripper to remove finish from stock, then use boiled linseed oil, not poly. All the internal parts of the receiver are coated in acid from the vinegar (not good). Standard wheels are much too aggressive for gun metal. Brownell’s sells a four row carding wheel that is perfect. Cold blue works great if you are patient and follow the directions. Do not clear coat. Repair the stock if at all possible. The less new parts you add, the better it will be. I have done a ton of similar guns and I have been very happy with the outcome.

I don't know. I'm not a gun guy. I have shown several gun people and they never really made a comment either way whether it was too long or Too Short
