Showing the first results of the Jaccuracy Scope Project to see if a project like this would be desirable for the long range shooting community. I can see this being a great tool to teach new shooters as it can act as a spotting scope or eventually get directly mounted to a rifle for direct use as a digital scope. Let me know in the comments if this seems like a fun build for you and if you would pursue building one if I put a "How To" guide together paired with the software package for a price point. Let me know! The release of the Pi 5 will be epic for this application! Can't wait to get mine in the mail and start experimenting!
Time Stamps. yes you are!

Status Update (Dec 6th 2023): Working to write some bash installer scripts so setup on a new Pi is easy peasy. Also got a new better working 3D printer for the prototyping prints of a new layout when I have a solid design nailed down. Currently have a build using a Pi 2 Zero W that works decent but the frame rate suffers so optimizations will need to be the next priority for the code.

@@Brinkmasterj I'm tempted to put it out for free at this point and open it up to the community as Open Source so it has real brain power behind it, my time to work on it is so slim anymore, and getting a clean IMU calibration method and screen is going to take some big thinking.... The magnetometer needs calibrating after mounting on a metal anything, to cal out hard iron effects. Thats waht will make the heading reading the most accurate.

@@Brinkmasterj sorry if that dissapoints, but I was hoping for more viewership and eyes on this far into a break on it, sent the video out to quite a few areas to gain some project exposure but thats just hard to come by if youre a small channel, and certainly isnt a healthy thing to base project motivation on haha

Thanks!!! That means alot, when i return from vacation I was thinking to clean up the coding to put on github as a first sloppy version for folks, just have to type out some wiring guides for the compoents and stuff. It will need community help for sure as I'm not going to have much time to work on it anymore with my first kid on the way.

I love this project! YES, I WILL PAY $50 for the software and parts list with instructions about assembly!! I have done lots of long range shooting with just DOPE. And used many Ballistic calculators, But what you have built with basically readily available parts (the software, not so readily available), that is awesome! Most mfgs are severely restricting availability of this type of scope or pricing it out of most shooters ability to purchase. This is just plain AWESOME!!!!!!

Thanks for watching!! Just a few kinks to sort out on software with IMU calibration. Alots been on hold for a while cuz of some major family life events but hoping to continue at some point! Most exciting part is the low price and customizability even if this build looks ugly as a first pass proof of concept :)

This is a really cool project. I see all of these fancy new auto-correcting ballistic reticle scopes coming out from companies like Leupold and Vortex, but they're all $10k+, and suddenly I start asking what features do they have that can't be assembled into a Pi for a drastically lower price. Please continue posting more about this!

Actually I could put this on my toy crossbow that goes 15 ft, I'd just use dumber highschool math and 1-2x zoom. I'm fine with soldering or ordering a custom PCB but no guarantee I'll make this. I might've missed it, are you planning to overlay thermal? Might be hard to line up.

I would love to be able to see this with the thermal option. I know you said the ITAR rules restrict some use but from what I can remember that only deals with importing and exporting outside of the US. I would still love to build out one of these, but getting into the thermal realm would make it 10x better.
@JackToth

More expensive too, especially optics. I managed to snag a germanium lens assembly for $50 on ebay that gave that FLIR in the video about a equivilent of a 6x magnification, was super cool but 3d printed mounts arent suitable for keeping a sharp image with how tight of focus it required. I was going to do a seperate video on that mod but got side tracked

Originally i was going to parrallel mount them so you could hot-switch to thermal and back to visable/night vision. Still super doable but cranks the project price way up

Count me in. I've been looking at adding a scope to my PDW. Either the prices are absurd or the quality is super questionable. I was to the point where I was heading down this same rabbit hole, though my microcontroller devices were going to be Pi zero W and ESP32s. On a whim, I thought I'd check the youtube and found this video.

@@JackToth let's do it! Can you share the current STLs? I usually use OnShape for my modeling. Let's collaborate on the frame to get that tactical look that's both neat looking and practical! Edit: woops, re-watched the vid, at the end you asked for interest in buying the BOM and guides, code and such. I'm still interested, but would understand if collaboration was not on the table.

I defintly had that in mind, and would have to take a second look at the models to make it applicable for air rifles, i think pellet/air rifles are accessible in other countries, maybe ill browse that option and do some research!

@JackToth I'm a little familiar and have a super cheap soldering setup. So I could probably make it work if it's simple and can be messy. But I expect you would have more interest in it down the road if it has a no solder option. I would prefer a presoldered option myself.

I think performance/range would be limited to the price point of what people want for the lens, the lens i used is the cheapest/sharpest combo i could find as a baseline. Definitly usable to hit 1000 yards from when i brought it to the range. That might be what i call the visable max without turning on the sensors high res mode (10fps max frame rate)

Just found this when I was trying to see if anyone had tried this or not. I mean $50 isn't unreasonable for an assembly kit, but if you had it all premade and tested then I am sure you would sell more. As well as made it more visually apealing by putting it enclosure. The thermal scopes you see that don't have nearly the customization that are like this range from 2k-15k. Definetlly interested as both a programmer and a guy trying to put together a thermal scope lol..
@JackToth
@JackToth 4 ай бұрын
I got far with the thermal side but the FLIR Lepton was the cheapest starting route, coupled with some germanium optics i got off ebay for cheap i had equiv of a 5x scope of magnication going which was cool! But the Lepton electrically caps itself at 9fps for ITAR reasons which crippled the usefulness haha, i havent returned to it in a long time to find an alternative 30fps bolometer

I was also waiting a bit for the Pi5 to release but its SPI bus seems speed capped with the current software, so it performs worse with my architecture than building with a Pi 4B

Just started watching the video, but your choppy live view screen could possibly fixed by going with a global shutter on the HQ camera. the CinePi guys are working on a camera software for the camera

As for your $50 price tag, it depends: Do you want to work on your pet project solo, and see it possibly go nowhere after a few years? Or do you want to see ubiquitous use of it, with some minor development on your part, and no return on your sunk cost? If the later is what you want, take it over to the Ctrl-Pew rocket-chat instance and let the 3D2A guys get their mits on it. Then it will really take off.
@JackToth
@JackToth 8 ай бұрын
@@fitz3540 hey! So the global shutter is only 1.6 Mp compared to the ~12MP of the hq (i think) so youd lose a ton of zoom power and snap-to capabilty. Working currently on build/install instructions and a final releaseable first code rev to throw on Gumroad, where ever it goes it goes. I’m more curious on progressing the physical build since i know the software is in a stable and usable state already im sure someone else could pick that end up
