Super cool man! Did you build it with node groups or using osl? I’ve been working with Zircron45 on lens simulation for a bit, finished my own set of lenses made with actual geometry right before the ray portal node got released and been trying to do some lens simulations with it since
@JackToth
@JackToth 24 күн бұрын
I started making them with blender 3.2 way back so had to do physical geometry since ray shaders werent native yet, see my channel for the og vids, the physical geometry when scaled properly absolutely has to stay static to mitigate floating point errors, if you want some additional lenses i can email you a download code. Do you want to affiliate for my kits possibly??

Thanks for this starter tutorial - I thought it would be a lot more complicated but now I feel I can do some simple renders to test out the lens. I'm just starting with your lens kits and this is super helpful! Can I ask which vintage lenses your anamorphic lens where modelled after? I went on a wild goose chase for old lens patent schematic drawings and I couldn't find any decent info for my holy grail anamorphics (Panavision C Series). One more thing, if you could please explain the difference between the single focus and dual focus jackimorphics and when to use which, that would be much appreciated, also. Thanks Jack!

Yea! Do you have an email i can send something to? I also browsed HEAVILY for some of the famous ones but they are too protected. I ended up using my own simplified formulas which bring some heavy spherical aberrations in the original singlefocus/dualfocus versions. I also came up with an original prescription for the WIDE2x. The SHARP models use a different approach i can send in email

Very interesting, I'm not a photographer or filmmaker so don't really know about lenses. But you seem to explain things very well. Why would one use these lenses instead of the built in camera? And can the built in not do these effects?
@JackToth
@JackToth 27 күн бұрын
Oh man camera guys (photographers, cinematographers) can get incredibly detailed about the characteristics of lens choice for a shot/photo. The depth of field from a lens is probably one of the most important behind flaring and other obvious ends. Lately I've noticed more and more modern movies being shot with vintage glass sets that bring alot of effects not found in blender stock cameras nor accurately recreated with the 'aperture' trick, so recreating some of the most popular vintage lenses seemed like a perfect solution. This way the rays are bending nearly perfect to that of the lens they are based on and makes a big difference to the image

If I understand correctly, I can use their Follow Focus/Zoom like CMF-06 or CMF-04 and I can calibrate it at system startup (via button on follow focus), then via USB inject desired position? Will it hold the position throughout the day? I don't need smooth transitions, but to go to precise desired positions all day long.

Its repeatability seemed decent if it doesnt power off, you can def replace the wireless build with a computer sending the packets over Usb, i used python to do it years back when working on this. Itd be a good option to experiment with building a GUi to control it!!! All hex commands are in the instructables page

@@JackToth It installs fine, but it's not finding my HM-10 module. And I have another issue: my Zhiyun follow focus is not turning on by itself. It doesn't turn on when it's not plugged into a charger. If I plug in a charger, it shows the charging indication, but when it's unplugged, nothing shows. Is this normal? Another interesting thing is that I actually updated the firmware successfully by plugging it into my laptop. (I don't have a Crane 2 gimbal to test if it really works.)

this is awesome, i dont understand why more people arent demanding physical lenses like this in 3d software. i created a few very basic ones in daz/iray to use with a fisheye lens but the documentation for doing such a thing w/iray is so sparse as to be almost non existent--will definitely check this out once i make the full switch to blender

Thanks!!! I fear people are thinking the advancements in GPU power just means instant or faster renders and don't remeber the days of letting things render over night. I think it forced artists to take their time with composition and lighting before hitting render. I thought using these would be a cool goal for people to return to sacrificing a bit of render time for a big boost in photorealism. When i released them a while back the distance limit from that original floating point error probably made them more unnattractive for folks. The anamorphics didnt get those as much tho :) When you try them out send me renders and thoughts!
@The3Dsmash
@The3Dsmash Ай бұрын
Hey, great to see an update from you! Yeah, when I recently saw the UE5 lens video, I remembered your anamorphic lens vids from years back and yeah, you were the first one creating these "virtual" lenses. I hope you and Joshua can get a collaboration going since you have so much more experience trouble-shooting these lenses and he seems to be very early in his R&D. I moved away from Blender so haven't played much with your lenses, but damn the images from your set-ups are so nice, I'm tempted to try rendering in Blender just to get that buttery cinematic look. But I would really like to use Octane instead of Cycles. Do you forsee any problems using your lenses with Octane? Any experience with that? Also, love the homestead vibe with chickens and cats.
@JackToth
@JackToth Ай бұрын
Its a simple life lol. Ive been emailing josh after a little tantrum of mine last week about haha hopefuly he bring the some anamorphics to work in Ue5. I tried octane for a bit back at the beginning, things were working with the anamorphics, maybe ill have to make seperate files with the materials recreated, i just didnt think Octane was as popular as cycles to start!
@The3Dsmash
@The3Dsmash Ай бұрын
@@JackToth I think you're right about Octane in Blender. Not very widespread. But your lenses plus Octane would be a dream team! Thanks for the reply. I don't know much about the technical aspects of these lenses and what changes are required for them to work in other DCC apps and renderers, but I hope you and Joshua can make some cool things happen together.
@JackToth
@JackToth Ай бұрын
@@The3Dsmash I might open up my Blender version with Octane and try them out again, just the material and render settings seem to confuse me coming back to it after a long time. Check out the example Cycles render i put in the tagged comment above on twitter tho! Rendering other people's scenes really make them look great. I'm realizing my own scenes are just not artistic enough to show off the characteristics
@The3Dsmash
@The3Dsmash Ай бұрын
@@JackToth I just saw the mushroom render and the lens effects (smeary vignette, buttery bokeh, spherical blur) are incredible! I'm eager to hear about your Octane experiments. Either Cycles or Octane, this is the look I want. BTW, I'll argue about your scenes not being artistic enough. Don't underestimate the cinematic impact of Plastijack on the giant chessboard, haha. One thing I wonder about is the difference in render speed. Have you done speed comparison between a vanilla Blender camera vs Jackimorphic Lens renders? Keep up the great work and please keep us posted on your progress and updates.

And used many Ballistic calculators, But what you have built with basically readily available parts (the software, not so readily available), that is awesome! Most mfgs are severely restricting availability of this type of scope or pricing it out of most shooters ability to purchase. This is just plain AWESOME!!!!!!

Making these lenses is a lot of fun but I didn't enjoy messing with the ortographic camera-as-film-sensor. It's completely unintuitive to me why I need depth of field and why a shallow focus distance is necessary. I tried using a white diffuse plane as film and an ortographic camera to capture the image on the plane, that worked too and was more intuitive. I wonder if more efficiency can be had doing that.

I would love to be able to see this with the thermal option. I know you said the ITAR rules restrict some use but from what I can remember that only deals with importing and exporting outside of the US. I would still love to build out one of these, but getting into the thermal realm would make it 10x better.
@JackToth
@JackToth 2 ай бұрын
More expensive too, especially optics. I managed to snag a germanium lens assembly for $50 on ebay that gave that FLIR in the video about a equivilent of a 6x magnification, was super cool but 3d printed mounts arent suitable for keeping a sharp image with how tight of focus it required. I was going to do a seperate video on that mod but got side tracked

Originally i was going to parrallel mount them so you could hot-switch to thermal and back to visable/night vision. Still super doable but cranks the project price way up

Just found this when I was trying to see if anyone had tried this or not. I mean $50 isn't unreasonable for an assembly kit, but if you had it all premade and tested then I am sure you would sell more. As well as made it more visually apealing by putting it enclosure. The thermal scopes you see that don't have nearly the customization that are like this range from 2k-15k. Definetlly interested as both a programmer and a guy trying to put together a thermal scope lol..
@JackToth
@JackToth 4 ай бұрын
I got far with the thermal side but the FLIR Lepton was the cheapest starting route, coupled with some germanium optics i got off ebay for cheap i had equiv of a 5x scope of magnication going which was cool! But the Lepton electrically caps itself at 9fps for ITAR reasons which crippled the usefulness haha, i havent returned to it in a long time to find an alternative 30fps bolometer
