Not too many got stiffed by Dempsey, Louis and Carnera. Sharkey's face was the recipient of a lot of history.

Jack was the tough old pro at this stage and Joe the young prince but I think a young Joe Louis at his peak could have beat anyone through history. He was ultra fast, sharp had a great eye to place the punch and learned from every fight. He deserved better from the World and certainly the US tax authorities.

Louis signed over money in earnings he got for 2 bouts; 1 check directly to the USA Army relief and another check for the USA Navy relief around the time of WW2. The USA government even though they got all of the money in both checks had the nerve to say they can legally tax Louis on the earnings for those 2 bouts. So, Louis gives the government both checks in their entireties and the government says now pay us taxes on those two checks. Louis's tax rate was very high in those years. So, if the promoters gave him two checks for 1 million each for those 2 bouts he gets taxed maybe $400,000 - $500,000 or more on each check. Louis had to give the USA government taxes on those checks. It is disgraceful what the government did to him. And Louis spoke highly of the USA encouraging our soldiers to do their best to defeat the Axis powers of Hitler's Germany and Hirohito's Japan. Louis was a great man who suffered from mental illness in his later years all the while the government kept on taking money away from him. The interest and penalties he accrued were insane. Louis is the greatest of all heavyweights. Ali, number 2. Many think Ali is the best heavyweight, but one guy who knew Louis and Ali's abilities well thought differently. Eddie Futch was a little pro boxer compared to the heavyweight Joe Louis, but Joe used to like sparring with eddie trying to see if he can catch him Futch was a very good defensive boxer. Futch helped Joe sharpen his reflexes and timing. Futch also, interestingly trained the first two boxers who ever beat Muhammad Ali. That is he trained, Joe Frazier and Ken Norton. Ali pulled his head back from a jab. A big no no in boxing, but he was so quick he usually got away with it. Norton used the jab to beat Ali. Frazier also purposefully feinted to get Ali to pull his head back. Then Joe would take a swing and hit a homerun landing a punch clean on Ali's jaw. He did it often. Louis was a very quick handed puncher with one of the best jabs in heavyweight history. Louis also was an expert body puncher. Louis would beat up Ali over 15 round distance, IMO. Tyson struggled with confident well skilled boxers who refused to be intimidated by him. C'mon, Louis, Ali, prime Holmes, Foreman, surely would beat Tyson, IMO. I think Marciano, Frazier, Johnson, and Dempsey would, too. Holyfield's will and skills were also a bit too much for Mike. These 9 boxers would never let Mike intimidate them. But no doubt, I got Tyson in top ten heavyweights, ever, at #10. He was a terrific boxer. very quick hands, tremendous power in punches, smart inside, dug to body. Hard to beat, for sure.

Watching Louis work is like watching an MLB pitcher. He throws a left that looks like it is going to be a simple hook to the chin, but at the last moment, it dips below Sharkey's guard and hits him in the liver. It's like a slider dropping before it reaches the plate.

I’m 60 years old, but I’m giving credit and respect to the fighters of old back in those times. From watching this video, Sharkey was as game a boxer as they came , going out on his shield. They sure aren’t built like this anymore.

Sharkey fought both Dempsey and Louis and stated he believed Dempsey would have won. But, I don't believe it. I think he is just saying that to save face since he did quite well against Dempsey compared to how he did against Louis. I am intrigued about Jack's training routine. In his prime, he had the musculature of a modern athlete: a swimmer's back, a gymnast's biceps, and a rower's legs. However, his muscles didn't necessarily translate to power. I wonder if it was because he was more of an "arm puncher" compared to his contemporaries. Honestly, I think Jack Sharkey would be cruiserweight champ today.

@@EverettBurger I don't see how that's him saving face. He fought Dempsey when he was at his peak and 24 years old (not to mention Dempsey was 32 so he was well past his best at this point), and the Louis fight was his last before retirement at age 33. WHEN you face a fighter matters - saying Dempsey would have won isn't unreasonable at all. He had a style that would have given Louis real problems - plus Louis' one weakness was his ability to take a punch (he was knocked down a lot) and Dempsey was one of the best punchers ever.

Sharkey was past his best. But so was Harry Wills when Sharkey fought him. Sharkey was game. He should of beat a comebacking Dempsey before being hit low and suckerpunched and Ko'd in 7 rounds. I am still not sure about so called low blow in 1st Schmeling fight.....and as far as loss to Carnera? Sharkey kind of tough to analyze.

Nonsense. Every fighter has footwork, if you don't know what you're seeing maybe. Jersey Joe Walcott, Bob Pastor, Arturo Godoy, Tommy Far, Jimmy Braddock, Carnera non fought as " flat footed plodders". Ali struggled with Doug Jones and Henry Cooper. You think these fighters are easy to hit because the greatest offensive talent in the history of boxing is punching.
