The "Fight of the Century"
In 1910, former undefeated heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries came out of retirement and said, "I feel obligated to the sporting public at least to make an effort to reclaim the heavyweight championship for the white race. . . . I should step into the ring again and demonstrate that a white man is king of them all." Jeffries had not fought in six years and had to lose weight to get back to his championship fighting weight.
The fight took place on July 4, 1910 in front of 20,000 people, at a ring built just for the occasion in downtown Reno, Nevada. Johnson proved stronger and more nimble than Jeffries. In the 15th round, after Jeffries had been knocked down twice for the first time in his career, his people called it quits to prevent Johnson from knocking him out.
The "Fight of the Century" earned Johnson $65,000 and silenced the critics, who had belittled Johnson's previous victory over Tommy Burns as "empty," claiming that Burns was a false champion since Jeffries had retired undefeated.

My Dad and Uncles talked about this era when I was a kid. Needless to say, hearing stories about champions made quite an impression on me as an adolescent boy. These vintage films of that era really brought my Grandfather’s memory to life.

What a shame they had to involve race back then. Johnson is an incredible person as well as a fighter. Imagine fighting in front of thousands of racist who despise your kind, during a time lynchings were happening. Johnson would knock out their white hopes, date white women, and sport around in fancy cars.

.....I think the racist is you. Don't go smearing everything so wide, an entire demographic is not always to blame. Many at the match might have even been fans of Johnson for all you know, there's always racists the difference better standards of living, education and massive system can make are amazing. We'll likely only see horrors like that again if asshats like yourself continue to press the issue and control is lost.

@@7dayspking You should read how the media and the audience treated Jack Johnson during his bout with Burns in Sydney and subsequent fights. They were so fucking pathetic and insecure that they made a 'Great White Hope' to groom a white fighter to beat him, unable to digest the fact that a black man is the heavyweight champion of the world. The only 'white' people who supported him was his support crew, his mentors (including Joe Choynski) and his girlfriend/wife. Not saying that they were all racist to him, but the amount of hate that he had to face was shocking. Which makes him an amazing fighter because he had to be physically, mentally and emotionally strong to be the champion that he was.

I don't care what anyone says Johnson is easily one of the top 10 heavyweights to ever fight. Put him in any other era than the early 1900's and allow him the stuff the other era fighters had and he woulda been just as solid as he was in his era. He had a ton of courage and stood up against idiotic social trends and had the nads to run his mouth and back it up; he was a loudmouth way before Ali even dreamed to be one. He also helped evolve boxing from a sport from old fat and skinny dudes to a sport of people in shape and made it an event.

Jim Jefferies is crowding Jack Johnson trying to smother his punches and render them useless. That's what a fighter does then he knows he cannot take many of his punches. It's an ugly way to brawl, instead of to box your opponent. I used it, when ever I had an opponent who boxed better than I could and I upset them by never giving them the space needed to perform their techniques gracefully! They key is, you have to know how to box and to brawl just as Jack did!

OdizzleDot S Johnson met Jeffries in a bar during Jeffries title reign to get a title shot. Jeffries refused but told Johnson ""There's a cellar in the place. 'Tell you what I'll do. I won't meet you in the ring because you got no name and we wouldn't draw flies. But I'll go downstairs with you and lock the door on the inside. The one who comes out with the key will be the champ." Johnson refused and walked out.

***** That is made up. Even if it were true, could you blame him for refusing a bar fight in cellar? What the hell do you think would happen to him after that? One could say that modern day boxing has come a looong way. I see stuff in that fight that makes me say "oh that's not very sporting". But, I'm also aware that in 1910, boxing had come a looong way from where it had been in 1810. 1810 of course being the 100 years refined version of the 1710 "boxing". How rad would it be to "Watch" a Mendoza or Molineaux fight? I'd love to see the Broughton vs. Slack fight, as I appreciate the "bad guys" in boxing; for the emotional investment in seeing them brought down, and them administering a double dose of life's cruel reality, when they straight up *Starch* the good guy. I can only imagine how different boxing/pugilism must've been in it's early years.😞

314 lbs to a competitive 226 in six months, that would be amazing today but he did that in 1910. I know that there isn't "video" documentation, but is there any kinda written about how he did it? He did all that before protein shakes, thermogenics, pre/ post workout supplements, and all the different workout regiments/ machines we have today. It would be interesting to see what he ate, how he worked out, and overall what he did at that time to get back into great shape.

People say "six year layoff' trying to make it sound like Jefferies was super old. Lol he retired at 29. He was 35 for this fight & Johnson was 32. And it was a 4 year layoff (not 6 lol). He retired in 1905 then trained for a year for the fight in 1910.

Excuse me.. BUT WHAT IN THE FLYING FUCK IS: "A Morning Constitutional"? (3:45) ~ And if Jack Johnson took HIS.. how can I take MY morning constitutional!? Is 'constitutional' Titanic-era slang for 'vitamins'? ... OR "Dump"! He took his morning dump? Of course he did! Wow..totally makes sense now. In fact, There are times where I even take TWO morning constitutionals!

( adding something unrelated->) some things sound so ridiculous I had to re-listen just to make sure they were really said. Most ridiculous, "The Dispute Over Referee"-> APPARENTLY, the BEST TWO options - to Referee 45-rounds of boxing - were: OPTION #1. "..Ask Ol' President Taft! ..No? " ~ OPTION #2. "..Send A WIRE to 'Sir. Author-of-Sherlock Holmes'!" ... hahaha WTF?! It's hard to even imagine how different things were then! But it's like: 'Mayweather vs. Pacquiao'.. "Hey, Obama! you gonna ref? No? Hey, J.K. Rowling!.."

Johnson made$65,000 for that fight, which is a little north of $2,000,000 in today's money. Not a bad chunk of change, but Jeffries including his signing bonus made almost twice that as the losing challenger. That's 1910 for ya

At 9:55 Johnson does something not very legal, I never noticed it before. After he hits Jeffries with a left hook if you watch and rewatch closely and slowly those seconds you notice he pushes Jeffries out of the ring with his hands. Use slow motion and see

He was OUT of the ring for 3 years, working on a farm...and what do YOU think they did to unwind after that??? MANY would smoke,. drink..,etc....and he admitted that he did smoked several packs a day and he lost over 100 pounds to train...but he was just outclassed by Johnson who really ddin't trained MUCH for this bout..and I NEVER said he was past his prime...but if he did trained more, the match wouldn't had gone as FAR as it did over a century ago....
