Jack of all trades

In this video, I put random clips together because this is youtube. Please don't watch it and expect it to mean anything. LISTEN INSTEAD!
In this audio, I explain why being awesome at something is cool but unlikely and not as enjoyable or rewarding as you might think it is, before arguing that being a jack of all trades will give you everything you ever wished for in life.
(The juggling is the first I've done in 6 months and I hadn't warmed up at all. It's nice to know that my ability settles at this level even if I abandon practice for so long! It would only take a few hours to warm up again if I wanted to. It's not as if I've lost my skillz forever or anything.)

I feel like you and I have the exact same mindset, you treat juggling in the same way that I treat Rubiks cubes. Your KZfaq network expresses how you think and self analyze so much better than I think I ever could (Especially in these thoughtful, talkative videos, they're my favorites). I really look up to you, keep up the amazing work.

This is one of the most relatable things I've ever heard. People always say that the more you practice at something the better you will get, i find that its the opposite for me. With nearly every new hobby i take up i always find something to be competitive about which ruins the hobby completely. Its like the more I practice at something the more scared i get at failing at it, which makes me do worse, until eventually i get worse which creates an entire vicious circle and something for other people to judge. Like the video, the easiest thing for me to compare this to is CSGO. I used to play that game just for fun until eventually i had an urge to get better. I would regrettably spend 2-3 hours in warmup everyday just to inevitably do bad in the real game which made all of my hard work seem useless and just something to make the loss hurt more. Even if i did good in a game, it would just take one bad game or a bad shot to completely throw me off again and make me feel worthless. This cycle would continue until eventually i quit, moving onto another activity for me to repeat the cycle with, with one repeating question "why can't i be normal and just play for fun and get better naturally?".

Thanks. Always when you make such videos I start to think different a little bit. Such a 5 min video changes my point of view in the world. It is like theater. Someone shows you his point of view in a kind of entertainment which feels great. But the difference to your videos is that they are short and informative. Some people say these videos are boring. I like this video. It put a new view on myself. Im am pretty good at most things I do, I learn and adapt to new skills quickly, above average in most video games for example. But never an expert at anything. Yet my personality strives to be the best at everything I do. Yes everything... So there is that. Nomatter what I do, how good I do things. I am never happy with my results, I always tell myself I can do better. Yet when I look back at it, it was infact pretty good. Im weird.

Been having a similar thing going on, where I'll do well at something the first time, being in a spot I'm happy with, or even proud of, and then something randomly shoots my self-expectations up to fantastical levels that might not even be actually possible, and I'll overthink and try WAY too hard to do that, and I won't be able to do anything properly; even though I know that it's nothing more than stress, it never seems to go away unless I get _really_ lucky, and it's not like it won't be back some time to haunt me for a couple months. If you're the same, have you managed to consistently break out of it?

well, I learned that you are REALLY good at juggling! I've done many hobbies myself, but lately I found drumming and it's the MOST fun hobby I've ever had, I try to get very far with it. I quit listening to dubstep and using FL studio for this, which I was also pretty damn good at. It feels good to be very good at something, but man does it take time to get there. Oh yeah and my friend played bass for 6 years, he was REALLY good, you could say a master of his craft. Then he suddenly quit, I don't understand why but I guess this video makes it clearer

"I'm a very competitive person at heart and it's a curse" damn, didn't expect that sentence to resonate in me so much I'm a man of extremes I either suck horribly at something ( which is why I won't ever invest more XP in that shit ) or if I'm resonably good at it I'll waste waaaay too much time on it, whatever it is If I need to get something done, I either do a tactical 30 min quick "speedrub", getting the job just not-horrible enough that I don't get fucked by whoever assigned it to me Oooor I make it ABSOLUTELY PERFECT but spend 700% of the assigned time on it As you can see, in either case I have something to brag about But also both cases will leave the guy that assigned me that job equally disappointed

As much as I'd like to start following a "jack of all trades" mindset, I don't think I"ll chase after it. As a musician, I desire to be one of the best. Will it ever happen? Most probably not. But that doesn't mean I can't be happy. After practicing a piece for a few weeks (or months, depending on the difficulty) and i'm to a point where I'm comfortable playing it, practice doesn't feel like "practice" anymore... I enjoy playing it, and performing it, whether for a competition or for fun. TL;DR: Attempting to become the best at one thing and focusing on that one thing does, in fact, give me satisfaction despite the fact I will never reach my goal. Maybe that's just me and my passion for music. It'd be nice to hear some other opinions on this.

I am myself a very competitive person and in CS my friends always say that im good enough and i dont need to do all the extra training i do to play with them. No shit, i do it for myself because i want to be better, i want to be better than them. I am the same with programming, i have people in my class who are better at me in programming and people have said that im one of the best in the class and im a great programmer. Hey Philip I just listened to a short video by a guy named Tim Ferriss (check out his other works as well, I feel like you would like him!) talking about the benefits of being a jack of all trades, the tl:dr is use the 80:20 rule. I wanted to come back to this video as it felt off the mark to me when I originally watched it but I couldn't quite articulate why but I think Tim summed it up fairly well. You can check it out here /watch?v=_TYBdqS6RB4 Or search "The Tim Ferriss Show Episode 19" Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
