I just purchased a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria and I am going to tell you why the Ford Crown Vic aka Mercury Grand Marquis aka Lincoln Towncar is one of the best cars ever made. Ford used a very simple formula when they built this vehicle and it paid off in the long run.

Wife found a 2001 owned by elderly couple no longer able to drive it, their daughter sold it to us for . Garage kept, 78,000 miles. Really wish someone had pointed these cars out to me a decade or two ago. Work done: tires(replaced 14 year old tires!), airbags, coolant changed, oil changed to 5w-30 Royal Purple(see Ford Boss Me's channel and oil tests). The oil viscosity change corrected the oil consumption issue these engines can have. GREAT car, may outlast me.

I grabbed $15,000 to go used car shopping in Los Angeles. I’m not even a specific car guy I just looked for good owners in good parts of town with a good history. I looked at BMWs Mercedes Subarus Volkswagens, etc. After a week and a half of depressing outlooks, I was giving a shelf away on craigslist for free and an old couple pulled up in a Grand Marquis. I said, “huh….” Needless to say a week later after a solid week of research, I purchased a 1999 Grand Marquis LS with 76,000 miles for $3,400. So cal 2 owners (1999-2017, 2017-2022). Leather, ABS, air suspension, TCS, Brand new factory cassette radio and six disc in the trunk all works perfectly. Original leather binder with owners manual and logbook and original receipt and door codes in the glove box. I am absolutely in love with the car and I can’t understand why I’ve been driving plastic Lincolns and Mazdas and Honda’s for the past 20 years. It’s a dreamboat! And a baby at like a Rolls-Royce. I drive it just like people would expect to see someone drive it when they see it from afar. Also when I got there it turns out the guy selling it restores classic cars and he was putting a brand new $15,000 engine into a sweet El Camino. Don’t worry, he didn’t play title or salvage games with the Mercury.

I just bought a ‘96 Cougar with the 4.6. Same engine/trans, but a coupe, and 4 wheel independent suspension. So it handles well and still has a great ride. Went through and repaired everything that was needed. I have a total of $3.5K in it. It does need paint, but I’ll do that myself, should be $4K when it’s done.

If you can find a P71 that has a street appearance package and was never put into police service you will get many miles of trouble free service. I have a 2003 that was issued to a coroner. Always maintained and never beat on. Bought it as non runner. The starter went out and because of the age the county opted to auction it off. I paid $600 for it. Had a starter installed and have a great ride for under a grand.

Got an 09 P71 a few month ago and its such a good car! For a rear solid axle land yacht, it handles just as well as an ordinary mid sized sedan. I honestly was expecting it to handle like a 90s Chevy caprice: cushy soft suspension, terrible handling, just meant to go in a straight line

That is a good solid car...and an even better find! U r on the right track w/adding duals. Might I suggest an OEM racing filter that fits into your car's air box. Not a complete cold air intake mind you....just a rectangle K&N or Spectre racing filter. I had dual exhaust put on my '98 Grand Marquis and replaced Fram air filter w/K&N. Both mods upped my fuel mileage considerably and it did indeed add several more ponies under that smooth large hood. That was about 12 yrs ago.. I am still using that same air filter. It is a daily driver and just rolled over 210,000 miles last month. Btw, mine is a GS....or base model. But these things are so easy to add upgrades and modify they make great project cars and are durable as Tonka Toys! (You older readers know what I am referring to). Keep posting any modifications in the future. Great video.

So, I have been doing some research on the panther cars from the early 2000’s cuz I currently have my eye on a 2004 Grand Marquis as a daily so I don’t have to keep putting miles on my truck. It’s an 04 with 114,000 on it. Looks good. But I ran up on this video and it’s nice to k ow that the sister car to the Vic has basically the same setup. It will be weird because the last time I rode in a Vic I was in the backseat with a pair of platinum bracelets on. 😂😂😂 Anyway, great video and good Information. Looking forward to my future purchase. 💪🏻💪🏻

Have an 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis LS Sport very rare. Bought by my father new. I inherited it from him in 2015 when he passed away. Has almost every option including leather bucket front seats, center console with shifter, moon roof, the 239hp 4.6L V8 with true factory dual exhausts. 122,000 pampered miles. Had factory rear air suspension until I had to which to conventional rear shocks and springs, because one of the air bags started leaking. She does have old car issues now. Not many. But damned if she starts every time and gets me where I have to go!! I have AAA but I haven't used them yet because she's so reliable!! The best car I have ever owned period!! Will fix her up. Want to upgrade the sound system, put a Borla exhaust system on her. But keep her pretty much original. Love my Panther!! Good luck with your Crown Victoria LX.

We bought a retired 2007 P1 Arizona HWY Patrol CV in 2015 with then, 124k miles on it. Coming from someone who's been a Chevy/GMC man for decades, I never thought I'd own another Ford in my life. The vehicle I had just prior to this car was a 1990 GMC Sierra with a 4.3L V6 that I bought used and then I personally put 400k miles on it myself. I would still have that truck except it became evident that it was just time to retire it. However, this Ford CV Cop is probably one of the best cars I've ever owned. We love its 250 HP, the responsive handling, the roominess and comfort. The AC blows ice cubes and in this part of AZ we DO thank God since our summer temps get to 110°-118° in this area. We've only had some very few mostly annoying problems with it the car; once the AC regulator behind the dash failed (the most expensive) and then a Norwegian Rat chewed the tan wire for the tail lights which got me a "fix it ticket". This I'm told, is a common problem here; rats chewing wires in cars. Those were the most perplexing and annoying problems we've had and other than brand new 17" speed rated tires on it the day I bought it plus those other two issues, no major problems at all. My son in law has dutifully kept up the prevetative oil & fluid mantainance on it for us and it has just been the "go to" car that everyone drives that is an extremely reliable vehicle. It now has 173k miles & it still gets 24 mpg +\- depending. People have asked me why I chose to buy a retired P1 CV and I always say it was because in my reasoned logic, they are/were one of the most well maintained cars on the road. Plus tje AZ DPS post it came from {Sierra Vista) had/has one of the best vehicle service centers in the state. So far everything seems to be true and if you are considering purchasing one of these, they can still ne found and the parts for them are very available since they been in service so long.

Been rocking a 97 aero p71 that I got with 88k miles at a city auction for $700 for the last 4 years. Was used by gas department supervisor, so not abused. I had the exhaust modified and sold the cats for $900, it paid for the exhaust mods and the vehicle, so I got her for free pretty much. Waiting for the used car market to crash back to earth and scoop up a 2004-2008 model.

Actually the Mercury Grand Marquis is the best car of that type ever made. It has several advantages over the Crown Vic, which is a great car, just not the absolute best. The Grand Marquis has more luxury features, much better seats, softer suspension for a better ride, and a 2.73 rear axle that lets it cruise at 65 mph just above idle. 11 years ago I bought a 2006 Grand Marquis with 97,000 miles on it. I still have it, still running like new, with 381,000 miles on it. But nothing lasts forever. So a couple months ago I bought a like new, one owner, 2007 Grand Marquis with 36,000 miles on it from the original owners, an older couple living in a retirement community. I am a recently retired mechanic with 41 years experience. But I don't have access to a hydraulic lift. So I took it to another mechanic with a lift, and we both checked it out. All we could find was that it needed windshield wipers. The sellers had the original purchase paperwork, window sticker, and a stack of service receipts. Original AZ car, ZERO rust, perfect original paint. I bought it on the spot for $9,900. If that sounds like a lot, consider that this car will outlast $100,000+ worth of new cars, and you get to drive in luxury. I'm going to wear out the 2006 first, then start driving the 2007. I don't expect to ever need to buy another car.

I have an 06 grand marquis and it’s hands down the best car I’ve ever owned. It does everything and it does it well. And buying a civilian crown Vic, grand marquis, or Lincoln town car is a MUCH better idea than buying a p71. The p71’s eat up transmissions, have crummy interiors, no pat’s system so no door code pad, almost always crack the factory intake manifolds, crazy idle time. The list goes on. Lincoln town car is king, you get the 3.31 axle ratio, limited slip, dual exhaust, and the better civilian transmission that are known to last 300k+ miles.

I own the best of both worlds. A 2011 Police Interceptor SAP (Street Appearance Package). This is literally an undercover cop car. It has all the chrome, carpet, OE CD player and all-around cloth seats. It also has all the muscle of a cop car. The best part is most of these weren't used as squad cars. So, they were basically taken care of better than most civilian cars. You can buy a decent one with about 30k-80k miles with less than 1000 hours for around $8,000-$12,000. They're worth the money.

Now, the car IS 30 years old. That platform was in production from 1978 for the 1979 model year until 2012. (Yeah, the 2003 models up have a different front suspension.) My co-workers like to give me a hard time about this old car; until their Kias and Nissans have engine/transmission issues. I just remind them of all that traction they got in the snow. GREAT VIDEO!

Picked up a 98 police interceptor a week ago. The difference between the p71 and civilian is p71 has bigger radiator transmission cooler and oil cooler. Dual exhaust, The suspension is a little stiffer sits a little taller, and the alt is bigger to handle the equipment cops use. The biggest difference is the shift points in the transmission and the governor top speed. But these things last forever. Mine has 242k and after doing coil packs and plugs it's running like a champ

I found an '02 LX with 27k in 2013. Typical spotless 'ol lady's' car. Put dual exhausts on her so she's got a nice little rumble, tinted the windows and hub found me some Mustang Mach 1 rims a couple years ago for Christmas. We bought it to travel from OH to TN when we were moving. Now she comes out once or twice a year to cruise back to OH. Like riding in a Barcalounger. She's an absolute pleasure to drive and gets around 28-30 mpg on the trips. When not in use she's up on a lift covered until the next time. Has 74k in 2021.

The Crown Victoria is indeed the best car when it comes to police/taxi legacy, reliability, and are excellent in durability, but not raw power (when stock). It's more luxurious cousins the Grand Marquis/Town Car are very similar. I have an old school 1989 LX, and it is a beast. Love those cars, too. Most of what you said is correct. I 100% agree that the regular model is the better version to buy, as yes, the police ones are usually abused and lack luxury options the LX may have, and not to mention the performance difference is very little. I do have to point out that the police models actually once did had different engines, because in the original boxy 1979-1991 years, when they had the 5.0L Windsor V8, the cops sometimes had a 351 (5.8L) of that same motor. Otherwise, hardly different like the later years.

Crazy deal on such a clean civilian car with such low models. Try to get it to live as long as possible. I have a 1994 Lincoln Town car with the same 4.6l about to turn 200,000 miles. Mine has a lot of little issues but I'll be damned if it doesn't start up and drive each time

I had a 2003 Grand Marques & a 2004 CV LX sport. Both went 250K running perfect, then N.H. winters took them out. Neither one ever had fluids added or changed except the oil. Fantastic cars & I miss them. Only other cars that match them are GM B-bodies such as the Roadmaster ( 94 for me). Last of the REAL cars. LFOD !

Hey all. I just bought an 04 Crown Vic LX with 133,000 miles 3 days ago. I'm embarrassed to say that I paid $6500 for it. Long story as to why but I really like it a d used car availability around here is bleak at best. Same color as yours I believe..."Toreador Red". LOL. I admittedly know little about working on cars so I'll be at the mercy of local mechanics. She needs a good polish and buffing, Interior is showroom. Factory digital gauges....would have much preferred analog. CD player non-working and front passenger window doesn't operate from driver control. Other than that all seems well. I should get fluids changed just to start from a fresh point. I don't even know what I'm asking. I guess other than getting banged on the price, I hope that I made a decent choice. I'm 70 years old and on a comically finite budget. Great vid, great site, great comments and my sincere best to all.

I picked up a crown vic a few months ago. It's a civilian model that an old lady owned and was serviced by the Ford garage it's entire life. I didn't want to mess around with an abused P71. That looks like a fairly uncommon color. Post some updates on it. The 5.4 liter 2 valve from 97-2003 is every bit as reliable as the 4.6 liter 2 valve.

When I speak of the 5.4 I was referring to the 3 valve, which is one of the worst engines Ford has ever made, for many reasons.

When looking at a car, most people expect a vehicle that will last them 5-10 years. The idea of a car lasting 300/400/500 thousand miles is a complete afterthought. Surely a car with millions of separate parts is going to fail after a few years, right? Enter the Crown Victoria I, for my first car, was recently given a 2002 Crown Victoria with well over 200,000 miles on it. I was expecting something that was on its last legs. As I drove it. I began to realize something. While it had its squeaks here and there, I saw cars that were just off of the assembly line with twice as many creaks and rattles as my car. Looking at the engine and drivetrain, it seemed as though they were made yesterday. And the driving feel? It was like I was flying. The build quality of these cars isn’t just “good”…… it’s absolutely mental. My engine has been through 20 years of daily use, and almost every component in the block is damn near spotless. These things will, when maintained correctly, drive the same after 20 years as they did off the lot. The well maintained civilian models may very well last over a million miles. In terms of sheer dependability, There simply isn’t any other American car that even approaches the Crown Victoria family. They’re even still used by police departments in the US when newer tech loaded vehicles were available. Why? These things just keep going. They aren’t appliances like the iPad and camera laden leather boxes on the road today. They’re literal tanks. Throw these things in a junkyard, leave em in a garage for 20 years, doesn’t matter. They’ll shrug it off like it was just a cold start.

Love Mom and Dad's 2005 Crown Vic: Passed on to me at 55K miles in 2020. Yup not only smooth as smooth can be, but also pirouettes on a dime. Obviously the pinnacle of three box sedan engineering. Negatives: The a/c accumulator rusts out quickly and a premature end to the air bag sensor that tells the air bags when to deploy (mom says, "Oh well, we will just have to not be involved in fender benders then.. just like we used to be responsible for." No kiddin' mom... except now I'm driving with all these idiots on the road.

Well I'd have to agree with the general notion that the Panther was one of the best cars ever built. I couldn't say Crown Victoria in particular though because the Grand Marquis was its twin for all intent and purposes and so it was a great product also. The Lincoln Town Cars generally had so many bells and whistles that one or more of those creature comforts always seemed to be broken. I see more of the LTCs in the salvage yards around here than CV or GMQ, for example. The best of all IMHO was the Marauder, but with them being so rare comparably speaking and commanding the sales price that they do, I've passed on getting one to-date. And for the sake of direct parts replacement, I doubt I ever will, if to speak openly. That said, I would contend with your general argument that the CVPI was a platform that was used-n-abused. Eh, not so much. It depends on who drove them actually. And the context in which they were used. I own a 2010 CVPI for example. It was my first Panther. It saw service as a law enforcement vehicle, yes, but it was with the TEXAS Highway Patrol. Therefore it was mostly highway miles, had low idle hours, and never carried perps in the back seat. Heck that back seat still looked new, unused really. It was the front seat and B-pillar trim that had seen wear and tear (from the officers entry and exit with their firearms on their sides). However I found a good pair of trim replacements in a salvage yard and installed those easily. Anyway the point being that a blanket statement regarding CVPIs such as that just isn't true, at least not IMHO it isn't. I've had mine for almost 5 years now and haven't had a lick of trouble, apart from the usual issues that you find with any vehicle. I also own two other CVs, both 2006 LX Sports. I bought the one for the wife-eee and the second as a parts car for that car. However she liked the color of the parts car better than her daily, and so now I am in the middle of a rebuild of the parts car (supposed-to-be anyway). On the whole, I am a great fan of the Panthers. That said, I personally wouldn't buy anything older than the 2006 variants that we own. With the axle upgrade in late 2005, drive-by-wire system (which was in 2005 actually), available traction control (though the implementation of that changed in 2009) and other slight upgrades the 2006+ were superior vehicles IMHO. To each their own though. Any Panther is better than most all of the other vehicles I see on the roads these days. I am a huge fan of the body-on-frame design. I intend to maintain my Panthers until the day I'm gone. If anything, I only forsee purchasing additional Panthers later on down the road, not the other way around. Anyway good luck with yours, I look forward to seeing your future videos regarding your 2002.
