Can replacing the intake, spark plugs & boots, and injector O-rings somehow make the car more sluggish than before? Does the motor need to reprogram itself, or must that be done manually? Otherwise it starts better and idles smoothly. It just doesn't have the lemons it had before. Thank you for any advice offered.

1970s: trouble with Iran, Cafe legislation makes trouble for our domestically made vehicles so in 1978 Ford designs the Panther frame and has them built in Canada to bypass the cafe restrictions producing the Panther platform vehicles as an import along with the mustang so that we can continue to have real cars. Fast forward to 2012: Obama passes legislation making it illegal for the Crown Victoria's to be sold in our country unless they get an upgraded computer system and so every 2012 Crown Victoria was sent to Iran. Coincidence? I think not. There's obviously a concerted effort against us. ☠️

Mass air flow sensor: clean it if dirty; if you need to replace it use a Motorcraft MAF sensor only. Spark plugs, replace them and torque them to 25 lbs/ft and use no anti seize on them. The Motorcraft plugs do not require the use of anti seize. PCV valve, that is a simple easy change and cheap. Intake manifold, no need to replace if you have the 2005 and newer aluminum coolant plenum. If you have to replace the manifold use the Ford part only and it will come with brand new gaskets. Torque to spec and be sure to follow the correct torque sequence. Also the oil filter housing gasket tends to leak on high mileage cars, which results in both an oil and coolant leak. Replace the gasket with a FelPro gasket, cost: about $9. Overall these are very good reliable cars and can really take a beating.

You are so right about following the proper sequence and correct torque on any intake or head gasket change. Some people don't understand how crucial this part of reassembly is.

Here's some real information on the spark plug issues in these cars, and those alike with the same engine. The spark plugs blow out because of human error, not a manufacturer defect. Fords original torque spec was way too low, this caused many people to experience this blow out. Ford soon after updated the torque spec on the plugs, and it eliminated the issue. If you had a spark plug blow out in a 4.6 2v, it was either your mechanic or you improperly torquing the plugs. Fords original torque spec was around 10 pound feet. Now it is commonly accepted to do 25-30 pound feet.

This can also be caused by the engine overheating and then softening the aluminum just enough. Probably also was over torqued at some point. Happened after 2-3 months of having the car. Overheated and within a week it popped.

That's part of the problem. Thread count in the head in 2003 and older 4.6L was too low. Ford doubled the thread count in 2004 which gave better blow out resistance.

I have the Grand Marquis, excellent vehicle! When doing the intake manifold, go with the Ford Racing Performance intake. It will increase airflow in the higher RPM's allowing the 4.6 ltr to breathe much better. Dyno tuning will show an increase of nearly 50 hp at the top end, and allow the engine to rev another 800 rpm's. BTW.....it was only $238 at the time, so less than $300 and four hours later, I have a pretty damned quick Mercury!

As a retired mechanic (27yrs), let me say that 1A Auto puts out some very informative videos. Everything you mention here is correct, but I just want to clarify one thing. The spark plug issue. If you own a 4.6 with the 2 VALVE head you shouldn't have any blown spark plugs (assuming they were installed properly). If you own the 3 valve or 4 valve head, and especially the V10, you probably will have plug issues. These heads were engineered wrong from the factory, simply a bad design! I own a 03 Mustang GT and a Lincoln TC. Both with the 2 valve 4.6. Each have over 100k+ on them, and have had no plug problems. Thats why these were so popular with the police agencies and taxi cab fleets. They regularly ran 300k+ on these vehicles! Hope this helps. Keep putting out the great vids 1A auto.

Something I’d like to add about the intake manifold leaking is that if you let it go for too long it can leak into your spark plug holes, which is a whole mess to clean out and could get into the combustion chamber. This happened to me because there was no easily visible evidence of a leak anywhere else on top of the engine until I went to change the spark plugs and set eyes on a nasty surprise.

@@nickr3441 I've owned 6 panthers, 4 of them with the 4.6. My 95 TC had 465k on the clock when I junked it due to a blown head gasket. would have fixed it if the body wasn't rusting off and smashed up from being totaled by insurance twice. just wasn'[t worth the $200 in parts to keep it alive. Original engine, original 4r70w trans. I did have to replace the tail housing gasket at about 300k miles. as a fluke the gasket between the main and tail housing blew out. took about half an hour to swap out and put another 165k on the clock. Only gave it a Mobil 1 oil change every 8-10k miles and other parts as needed. no serious mechanical issues, just a body falling apart. It's replacement was an 05 TC that has 300k on it now with no issues. have an 03 GM with about 260k, had a bad intake, which is common enough on these at about 230k. most recent daily driver is another 05 TC that has 230k on it now. The 4.6 is a beast that lasts forever as long as you don't overheat it and change the oil before it turns to paste and the 4r70w is bullet proof. And I'm not easy on my engines or trans' Been through 3 5.0's in my 87 mustang and 7, yes, seven, AOD transmissions in the 4 years I drove the mustang.

I've done the blend-door actuator (not fun), intake manifold, rear air springs and compressor (went with heavy-duty airbags) for major repairs. I used Power Stop brakes for replacement and they are a huge improvement. Now I have a battery-drain issue that I'm trying to figure out. Other than that, it's been a very reliable car.

Great job and the comments very informative also. My 96 T Bird had the 4.6 and someone on you tube had a vid on intake replacement,, key point here is I did not undo most of the upper parts , if i remember pulling the injectors and a few other things and left the harness etc all together , then the intake just comes forward a bit and lifted from the front with the new one sliding under all the wiring and hoses. pretty easy as I was used to working on 302 motors etc which were very simple . like to have another if i could find a clean one.

Great video. Regarding spark plugs, motors up around late 2003 or early 2004 have half the head threads of later motors. Best to get a 2004 or later which were redesigned to resist spark plug ejection better. Regarding intake manifold, there are two versions of heads. 1998-2002 are NPI low air flow heads and 2003 and later are Performance Improved PI heads. Each requires different version of intake. For 2003 and later motors, get the Ford OEM with separate gaskets. OEM has better air flow than Dorman. Plus the Dorman has gasket seals built into the manifold. That is one reason why Dorman is cheaper.

Merc Grand Marquis owner here! So far i’ve had to do a blend door actuator for the auto climate controls and also redo the o-rings inside the climate control panel. the blend door sucked but was manageable for me. whole dashboard and even heater core had to come out. yes there are hackier ways to do it but i’d rather take the couple extra steps and do it right than modify stuff to make it work. also, yes weak power. i cleaned MAF but didn’t help too much. no codes. i think maybe manifold. haven’t decided which yet but haven’t found anyone to properly diagnose. crap starting on wet and rainy days in certain conditions or otherwise stalls out just after startup. runs fine when computer decides to compensate but won’t throw codes. just slaggy acceleration but otherwise has decent torque.

I have a 2008 Crown Vic that was assigned to me by my State Agency. Two more common issues are the driver’s front door window regulator and the wiper motor. Both items have been replaced twice in the 5 years I’ve been driving it. I haven’t any idea how many times those two items, or the items you discussed, have been replaced between 2008-2015. I’ve seen the same two problems on Crown Vics other Officers drove. I’d still do all I can to keep driving this old Police car before I get anything newer, unless it’s a newer Crown Vic before Ford stopped making them.

Note 2005+ models have DBW, so irratic or poor idle can be traced to the electronic throttle since they do not have an IAC. the aluminum intakes that came standard on 2002+ cars still fail. Usually the gasket fails, the heater core fitting on the back of the intake, or the plastic on the underside of the intake fails around the bolt holes for the thermostat. Still a good video, enjoyed watching. These cars are quite pleasant to work on compared to some other stuff out there...

Hi sir. I live in the Salt Lake City area and looking for an experienced mechanic to thoroughly look my 2009 Ford P71 over before I set out on a 1400 mile cross country move. Do you know how I'd go about finding a shop that can inspect my car for any problems ensuring it's up to the task? Avoiding a problem and needing help while out in the great wide expanse is the objective to help me ensure I arrive in one piece without a crisis is the objective. Thanks for warning about that a plug can blow out the aluminum block which I assumed would still be solid iron like the older versions for my 2009 seems to be heavier than an old 1996 one I had though it does have a really heavy duty foot locker like gun box solidly installed in the trunk out being a former K9 car. The car is almost a truck having no back seat where it's just a flat hard floor dog cage instead which I like for being a good long hauler.

Interior boiling sound without not running - let me guess sound is inside the car? Its one of the climate control blend doors actuators. There are 5 of these little motors. 2003-5 models use 1 supplier originally. the 2006-2011s used a different supplier. Its the same part, but ford changed suppliers. The 2006+ cars have infinitely more problems with the BDAs

On #2: If a plug pops out unplug the fuel injector so fuel isn't sent to that cylinder. That should get you to the auto machine shop to get a threaded insert installed. Use antiseize on your plugs.

With basic scheduled maintenance, these 4.6L 2V motors are really bullet proof. To grenade one, you really need to be a special kind of someone. The "High Flow" oiled air filters really screw up the MAF sensor. Just say NO to the aftermarket "CAI" systems which are really just "Hot Air Intake" systems.

Great point on the intake. They go from stock which take outside air in to the open intake that pulls air heated by the engine/radiator.

Civilian models can gain 10 or 15 horsepower from going to the P71 intake and that's way better than any "cold air intake" can do

2010 Grand Marque I love this vehicle. While driving all of a sudden my vehicle stalls. Several days of stalling in the shop she goes. Must be a fuel problem, change the fuel sensor and fuel pump. Runs fine for a week back in the shop we go again same problem. Change the computer, a few weeks later back to the shop once again I’m told it’s the radiator fan regulator and fan unit change that. I’m well over &1,500 parts and labor. Finally I gave in and brought it to the dealership $149 for a diagnostic check after a week in the shop they finally got a code saying it was the mass air flow sensor $70 part. Been running great ever since

I had a 2001 Grand Marquis and the engine light came on for a fuel level sensor. Recommended to replace the fuel pump and sending unit. Did that. No matter what we did, the light would NOT go off. A/C drain tube also ended up leaking into the frame. Rotted out from the inside out. Car was rust free otherwise. Ended up getting rid of it.

Quick car question. I have a 1998 Ford Crown Vic p71 I started my crown Vic. A loud pop sound happen right after I cranked it up. Turned it off quickly. Then I smelt something burning. Smelt like a speaker that just blown. I tried cutting it back on. Which it did but it sounds rough. Almost like it’s misfiring/ idling low. Any ideas on what this could be?

Hi, how are you? I own a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria from Canada import. I am having a problem with my car when the speed is reduced, the engine turns off suddenly several times in a row. If you have knowledge on this subject, please advise me because I went more than a garage and no one knows what the problem is.When I reduce my engine speed for something that he wants to shut down and I do not know what the car is, it jumps if I lower the speed and all the signs appear in the meter, as if I turned the car off and wanted to start it again or again I hope that I conveyed the information

I had a hard starting or long cranking problem only in the mornings. First thought was the fuel pump losing pressure overnight because once the car was driven it started fine the rest of the day. Long story short, it was the crank angle sensor going bad. Now I have the drivers window that has too much movement when going up. I took the door panel off but couldn't see where I would adjust out the play in the window regulator.

I replaced the EGR valve on my 2004 Grand Marquis and sometimes I get a code on my code reader, that reads there is excessive return exhaust gas. This does not happen too often. However, I am getting better gas mileage around 2 to 4 MPG depending on in town or on highway. I was getting 28 MPG on a long highway trip and about 20 to 22 in town. So, it there something I need to do to stop the code from coming up?

Did you get it sorted? Could be a bad catalytic converter, or some residual carbon on the valve, or even a dud valve or control solenoid.

Just had the intake replaced on my 02 Crown Vic. Now the engine has an intermittant miss. I'm planning on going through and disconnecting and reconnecting all the fuel injectors first. Next step will be to check my sparkplugs and coils which I replaced about two years ago. Probably a good Idea to check the torque on my spark plugs. I do need to get the valve cover gaskets done. I'm a shade tree mechanic, but right now as an "essential" employee, I can't get the time off to do my own mechanicing any more. Heater core and intake cost me $2000.00, but I need the car and with interest rates the way they are, I'm not buying another car.

Check the driver side plugs for coolant in the plug well. If so, you likely have a leaking intake that needs replacing. Aftermarket replacement is relatively cheap at just over $100, but it's a bit of work to replace.

One thing he did not mention, and it’s unavoidable it will happen no Crown Victoria is immune from it. The exhaust manifold sort of the same deal with the spark plugs the bolt or bolts will break from backing out, or the exhaust manifold will crack. If you get a Crown Victoria especially anything over 150,000 Miles do yourself a solid and go ahead and replace the bolts it will 9/10 happen before it hits 200,000 mile mark. Might as well go ahead and replace the exhaust manifold too.
