ABOUT THE LRB
Since 1979, the London Review of Books has stood up for the tradition of the literary and intellectual essay in English. Each issue contains up to 15 long reviews and essays by academics, writers and journalists. There are also shorter art and film reviews, as well as poems and a lively letters page.
A typical issue moves through political commentary to science or ancient history by way of literary criticism and social anthropology. So, for example, an issue can open with a piece on the rhetoric of war, move on to reassessing the reputation of Pythagoras, follow that with articles on the situation in Iraq, the 19th-century super-rich, Nabokov’s unpublished novel, how saints got to be saints, the life and work of William Empson, and an assessment of the poetry of Alice Oswald.

Is this amazing woman Jacqueline Rose? My god! Been reading her for years, with considerable awe and respect, but never saw her, heard her speak. Stunned by her acerbic mind and clarity of voice.

So much of value here, from anecdotes about her sister among the bedouins of occupied Palestine to Freud and Said's views of Moses and the role of the stranger in group formation, to her discussion of Sylvia Plath's poem "Daddy" and its tacit identification with the Holocaust survivor experience -- countering the faux victimism of Israeli colonialist ideologues, Rose says Plath's poem cues us to what every member of a dominant group needs to do, whether they like it or no -- it is to stretch, via linguistic and conceptual imaginative identification, into what it means to be the abjected victim/survivor of dominator oppression which one (say, as propertied white male) does not likely suffer in one's relatively comfortable life.

As a literary critic and Freudian, I would always have appreciated if I could ask Ms Rose her thoughts on my much beloved late professor, Harold Bloom...

I found her talk to be mind enlarging and fascinating. A remarkable woman. One whom the state of israel should listen to carefully but never will. Truth, unpalatable, is also the right to think differently but not to act.

If Israelis listened to this woman, there would be no Israel. I suspect that would please you. Israelis, even many of the left, are not, like Rose, ahistorical. They have lived it and are wise enough to reject counsel from stooges like Rose.

Wow. I’m in love - such a brilliant person and beautiful inside and out - an amazingly rich life combined with such an incredibly impressive mind. Also, is it just me or does the actress Rashida Jones, daughter of the stunning actress Peggy Lipton and legendary musician Quincy Jones, look a bit like Rose? Rashida has Jewish heritage through her mother’s family. Anyway just an observation - thank you for posting this brilliant conversation. Rose is utterly brilliant and breathtaking.

re: Plath's "every woman loves a fascist" and Rose's comment it may be because every woman has some element of violence in her own character -- true enough -- but what if Plath's poetic phrase there was much simpler -- that she bought into or was pressured to pretending to believe in the conventions of gender in which the male's aggressive imposing of his sexual lust is the norm of "a good marriage" that appalled her (Plath the woman, wife, poet)?

Interesting how sad monosyllabic and bovine the (male) dismissals are. Two “sillies” then straight to cussin’! Dinosaurs teeter.

The militarization of Israel? Kinda necessary when you are attacked the moment your State is born . If you speak of returning Palestinian lands, are you (Americans) volunteering to give your home back to Native Americans? Arab states have been bent on the destruction of Jews. Not just a country, but a race. We condemn the Nazis, but convey sainthood on the Palestinians? Ever notice that the Israelis guard their people with missiles, and the Palestinians guard their missiles with people? Meanwhile Arab school children are taught to be the next exterminators of Jews.
