On, Wednesday, July 14th, BISR faculty Danielle Drori and Rebecca Ariel Porte welcomed Jacqueline Rose for a wide-ranging discussion of her new book, On Violence and On Violence Against Women (us.macmillan.com/books/978037..., as well as her previous work on feminism, motherhood, racism, and apartheid. Among the topics discussed: Why, for Rose, are literature and psychoanalysis unique spaces for saying the unsayable? How do we write about violence without repeating it? What are we to make of the category of consent? How does the trauma of abuse affect one’s imaginative capacity and mental capacities? What does it mean to “apply” psychoanalysis-and is this a version of a master-slave relationship? In what ways is motherhood uniquely in touch with mothering with violence and the subjectivity of human experience? Why is the spectacle of (usually masculine) violence such a source of public pleasure? And what does this have to do with male fragility?

"Thinking acts as a break on the fantasy that the world is there to be mastered." We were just talking about that idea in a 12th step meeting today.

I think the word wanted here is “brake” not “break” but thinking does indeed break fantasies of mastery though too often - also - thinking can inspire fantasies of (eventual) mastery - hence the endless parade of first year (frequently male) philosophy undergrads who believe they are on the verge of remaking the (their) world.

As ever - utter gems from Professor Rose who is a genuine THINKER and fabulous WRITER of the highest order. She is glorious, and her shining humanity guides me and gives me hope that “the powerful play goes on” and that I (that any and all of us) might add a verse or two. I’m a medievalist, and I would love to listen to Prof. Rose discussing medieval lit for an hour!! Her thinking, the ranging of her mind over continents of philosophy and oceans of dark and bright flashes of feelings, through solar systems of…etc. Thank you Professor Rose for shining some light into my depressed afternoon. Thank you for your model - thank you for handing me gifts of well-chosen words so richly served. Sorry but please, presenters, listen with some openness - Rebecca you are an established professor not a grad student - please work on acting questions and generating questions and assisting conversation instead of standing in front of and stopping speech every time by indulging in grad student stuff like adopting a British-ish accent, using “um” constantly, and loud lip-smacking, and focusing **WAY** too much on your own mannerisms. Maybe I sound harsh but we are both academics and you are a full faculty member not a timid new grad student. The issue is that Professor Rose is a gift, and your approach hides her light instead of refracting it. Danielle you were utterly professional, respectful, and asked great questions of Prof. Rose - thank you very much indeed.

This is monumentally inappropriate and rude. Even if you wanted to give polite advice, you could have done with so much less arrogance and degrading body policing.
