In this video me (and Joli) take you through everything you need to know when it comes to growing a healthy, full and beautiful Crassula Ovata plant - commonly known as Jade plants.
These houseplant care tips can be applied to both traditional Jade plants, as well as Gollum Jades 🌿
HOW TO TREAT ROOT ROT:
- Carefully take your plant out of its pot and remove as much of the soil as you can from around its roots. I sometimes rinse the roots under the tap/hosepipe in order to get rid of as much soil as possible.
- If the root rot has impacted your plant's leaves, give them a little trim back, so that the treated root system won't have to work so hard to support and feed the plant - giving it a much better chance at healthy growth once it's back to its normal, healthy self. I know it's not nice to have to do this, but it gives it a much better chance.
- Take a look at the roots that have been effected most and prune them back to the point where they start to look healthier (chop away any dead brown areas). Make sure you use a clean pair of scissors or blade to do this so that it remains as sterile as possible, and dispose of the old soil.
- Make sure you thoroughly clean and disinfect the pot it was in, and use new soil to carefully pot it back in (I have a guide to repotting blog on my website if you've got any queries in regards to this). I've linked the soil mixes that I like to use in this video.
- Once it's repotted, give it a good water, and make sure you regulate this carefully over the coming weeks as your plant adjusts. Avoid using fertiliser for at least a few months whilst it adapts (you don't want to send your plant into shock, plus there's plenty of natural nutrients for it to enjoy in the new soil).
- To help prevent this issue again in the future, besides careful and monitored watering, I always keep a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide in the house and treat my plants with a diluted measure if I suspect they may have root rot. Hydrogen Peroxide adds oxygen to the soil and is really effective, not just at treating root rot, but allowing your plant to absorb nutrients from the soil.

My name is Dale Andrews and I'm from Lake Charles, LA, a truly subtropical climate not far from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. I think I only had to bring my jade inside for only 2 or 3 times this winter - and even then only overnight - so you get the idea. I'm so glad I found your channel! You provide clear, concise information for gardeners that I'm sure all of us appreciate. I'm frankly surprised I haven't found the channel by now and subscribed already. Keep up the good task of keeping us all informed! 😉

I have a baby jade plant, and my stepson decided to steal it and put it in his cubby where it didnt get watered for months. I got it back, and luckily it had survived. but then a few days later I found him pulling it out of the glass mason jar (with a drainage hole) and my heart stopped as i heard the roots rip and he yanked it out. Im so devastated, ive repotted it and im praying the roots will recover. Theres probably only an inch of root ball left, and its a good 20cm tall plant.

Fantastic video! Is it ok to propagate my jade plant during the winter? Or should I wait until the growing season?

Fantastic video. Can I repot cuttings back into the same pot as the main pot? Or does it need a smaller starter pot? 🍃

My Jade was in a North facing very little light window for about 5 years and when I moved it hated the extra light I was getting for like 3-4 hours opposed to 1. It's pretty I put it in rehab at my sister last year cuz I had other things going on I am getting it back tomorrow so I hope I can make her happy again 🤞🤞🤞🤞

They can take a while to adjust to new environments if they've learnt to cope in certain conditions. Gradually ease her into it and try to make the transition super gentle. Fingers crossed she bounces back!

Once lighting issues are corrected, how does one prune jade to encourage fullness? I have rooted quite a few, however, my house has terrible lighting. After watching your primer on grow lights, I invested in some, so that shouldn't be a problem any longer. Now I really need to fix my leggy jade. Any tips you provide will be greatly appreciated. By the way, I think you are terrific and are, by far, my favorite plant vlogger.

Thanks so much Tina! You can prune your plant back just above one of the brown rings on the stem - this will encourage 2 new branches to grow from that point and will make it appear much fuller. You can also plant the section you trim back and then plant it back into the same pot to make it look bushier 💚

Please talk about Jade plants and mealy bugs. After giving up on an infested Jade plant a few years ago, I bought a new plant from a reputable nursery, only to discover mealy bugs a few weeks later...help!

I've never repotted my Jade plant, and today I noticed that it's leaves were looking sad. The soil is still damp, so I wonder if it's needing to be put in a bigger pot. I've had it around a year.

Ive watched your videos for each of the plants that i have from propagation. I started some in water and some in soil. Pothos, Jade, and Peace lily. I dont have any windows that directly face NSEW. I have them in my bathroom that has a skylight. this is the brightest room in the house. Is this ok? how important is it to have the nursery pot? mine are in pretty pots -they have drainage-. Im new to owning plants (that Are not aloe). Am i ok or should i change some things? I do have new growth on these plants. TIA

If you've got a skylight that provides good light then that should be absolutely fine! I personally always use either nursery pots or terracotta pots just because I sometimes find the ceramic pots don't provide enough drainage - that being said, I've seen a few recently with multiple holes that I'm sure would be absolutely fine. So long as there's no potential for water logging at the bottom of the pot I'd have thought that would be fine 💚
