Jade Plant, aka Crassula, is a well-known succulent that is easy to care for and even easier to make FREE plants from. Watch this video as I bring you through my tips and tricks for having beautiful, healthy Jade Plants, as well as how to propagate this great plant from cuttings and even leaves!
I share all the different Jade plants that I own, from the lovely, oval Crassula Ovata, to the more cute and unusual-looking Gollum Jade, also known as Shrek's Ears Jade. @@Ficusforev jades will not grow bigger than the pot their in but it is in a fairly good size Terra cotta pot so I'd say the trunk is 3 to 5 inches wide and between 4 and 5 feet tall. I've made many plants from it also

Awww... thank you, having lived in other climates, we're very lucky here with our succulents, but miss out on some of the other lush perennials in colder climates.

Absolutely! There are lots of grow light options that look like nice lamps. Some grow lights can be brighter than a sunny window so you need to make sure they're not too close to your plants when propagating as they don't want to be overly hot, but grow lights are a definite option.

Very informative! I learned a lot! I have a jade that the leaves have started to shrivel. Based on your video, it's probably thirsty. I'm in Florida and it sits in my front door entry, so not in full sun but it seems to be "reaching" towards the sun, so maybe that's an issue also. I think I just might just have to water it really good and see what happens. Thanks so much for sharing!

Yes! I'd give it a deep watering... and maybe try and get it a little more light. I similarly keep plants on my porch and try to rotate them so that they can take turns getting better light every few weeks.

I’ve had a ripple jade under a grow light for the last 5 years. It NEVER looks happy. But it grows.

Great video,l love all the Jades . I have mine in terra cotta pots . What does it mean when the lower leaves turn yellow , and fall off . Am l watering too much or not enough

If the top leaves look healthy, green, and plump, the lower leaves yellowing could just be them aging and falling off and not anything to be concerned about. All plants lose older leaves eventually! If the top leaves are falling off or look yellow/unhealthy then you may need to "read" the leaves - skinny, wrinkled, and floppy usually means it needs water, plump but mushy usually means too much water.

I’m thinking of getting ice plant for ground cover in a small apartment yard (totally surrounded by sidewalk pavement, so relatively contained). I’d love a video about that. I could get cuttings from through the chain link fence by the side of the freeway where I wait for the bus.

Careful! Ice plant is pretty invasive and tends to choke out any other plants, there is a lot of work being done to eradicate it from California beaches where it is creating erosion problems. Having said that, if maintained properly, it can be a pretty groundcover. I'd recommend the smaller varieties. They do propagate just like other succulents. If you have stems with nodes, all you need to do is place them in soil and they will eventually root.

I left the cutting three days then i put in soil and some leaves start to die while other cutting i put directly to soil and its ok no leaves falling, which is better?

Hard to know without seeing it. I've had a lot of jades drop leaves and then come back bigger than ever, so they're probably both going to be just fine. Just be careful not to over water.

Can you propagate a jade stem no leave, recovering from overwatering (I think) and if so how long to see new growth approximate

That *should* work. If it was overwatered, be sure that any rot has been completely cut off and it's kept really dry. The growth will probably be really slow, so be patient and avoid watering for a while.

I live in Barrow, AK and have a pretty large jade plant. My plant has a dusty looking mold on some of the leaves. I have misted it with a combination neem oil and Castile soap but it still has mold. Do you have any suggestions?

Sounds like it could be powdery mildew. I have also been dealing with this on many of my succulents after a very wet winter last year. I would try rubbing it down with a good copper fungicide, make sure all tools are cleaned and sanitized. If that doesn't work, try treating with fungicide again and re-planting in a new pot withe new, fresh soil. Unfortunately it can be really hard to get rid of as the spores get everywhere, but Jade are really resilient!

So when do you water each one after it’s propagated? Root versus leaf propagation?

I try to wait until the propagation has grown roots, and definitely wait until I know that any cuts have callused over. If it already has roots then you can probably water it immediately, but as mentioned in the video, it's probably wise to wait until the soil is fully dried out.

I think you can save it. Just place it in some soil, it will likely start to grow. These plants are indestructible!

Do you feed the Jade plant? Any fertilizer ?

I haven't fed these jades at all, but I do use soil that usually has added organics in it such as earthworm castings etc. If you find your succulents are looking a little dull or are stunted then perhaps a succulent/cactus fertilizer could help, but I don't find I need it!

Like most succulents, if you have any piece (branch, leaf etc) you only need to place it in some dry, cactus mix soil and it should start growing roots!

If there is no danger of frost then it will be fine... just be aware that any cold or overly wet weather could damage or kill it.

What does it mean when most of the stems are turning powdery white?

It could be a few things, is this on a regular, green jade, or a different type of succulent? Some succulents can be prone to powdery mildew, especially if they've been in damp/humid conditions. This is something that should be treated with either a copper fungicide or other concoction (Google has a ton of solutions). It might also be a sign that the stems are suffering rot. However, some succulent varieties have a natural coating of farina or epicuticular wax, which is almost like they plant's natural sunblock and shouldn't be wiped off. Many lovely pale blue or purple succulents have this on their leaves and it shouldn't be wiped off or even touched too much as it is there to protect the plant. So depending on the succulent, and what the powder looks like, it could mean either something good or bad.

@FreePlantsForever thanks so much. It is probably powdery mildew. It is a jade plant. Some of the stems are getting weak and it has been storming ALOT lately in Florida. I do have copper fungicide, so I will give that a try. Thank again for your help. I greatly appreciate you.
