Two interesting additional infos: - The Apple CarPlay / Android Auto function is supposed to be rolled out with the next software updated, and existing owners should also be able to upgrade it over-the-air - Next to the base leatherette Luxtec seat surface, you can also optionally get the Kvadrat fabric like in the Range Rover Velar

Kvadrat fabric (Premium Textile?) interior is nice - but only seems available in black (unlike the Velar). It should set the sporty Jag interior off well? Excellent Review as always, and really great driving part Thomas - love the Eifel region! Many thanks for your work. Oh, and well done to Jaguar to get this car to market - kudos.

Tank you Thomas for this amazing review on this particular car.. i was expecting it for so long and finally it happen.. Love this car more with the withe leather interior sporty slimmer front seats and outside dark grey with carbon trims.. This car is a serious competitor into full electric segment of EV SUV specially since it can do light off-roading and not lose the warranty.. tanks again, good job. ;0)

Great review, as per usual Thomas! However, many EV drivers are concerned with the lack of 3-phase AC charging. It’s a good option for home charging and research shows that 90% of charging is at home.

In general though, the car industry still refusing to class EVs together with equivalent ICE cars is infuriating. They need to be compared directly by reviewers so people can see how much better they are. Carbuyer for example, don’t compare a Zoe to a Clio, or a Polo, or anything else. The wrong way to do it.

A little nitpicking here - if roof window is UV-resistant, it does not mean that it holds the heat from sun. For this, you would have to have IR (infrared) filters. UV are short wavelengths, those which causes suntun. And in fact most types of glass are UV-filters by the way.
@ssfua445
@ssfua445 6 жыл бұрын
The panoramic glass roof has a laminated construction that absorbs infrared radiation. Together with the tint and UV filter this prevents strong sunlight, UV light, and heat from entering the cabin.
@earthstick
@earthstick 6 жыл бұрын
I think he meant low e glass that reflects infra-red rays. UV rays are not the component of sunlight that causes heat. All window glass blocks UV rays from passing through. This is why photochromic sunglasses do not work in cars.

Thomas, a few corrections. The dashboard stitches material is actual Windsor Leather that is the same that is on the seats. Apple CarPlay and Android auto are available on the I-Pace though, I am not sure if you or the team were able to make it work. If it was not in the test car, Jaguar will roll out a over the air update with the two in car systems in it. Great Review Thomas.

I do like this a lot. It’s smaller and sportier than the Model X and better looking in my opinion, as a big fan of Tesla and everything they do. I like the interior, I like the caged in sporty feeling Thomas talks about. The issue with this car is the fact that it doesn’t have access to a charging network like the Tesla Supercharger network. Superchargers just work in such a simple way, unlike all other charging stations which require a lot of preparation and know how, and they can be unreliable, where superchargers are not. And there are always lots of superchargers in one location, so you don’t have to worry in the unlikely event that one is broken. Where that is an issue in my experience with other charging providers where they just have one or two per location currently. I also think that most people who watch these videos are going to know almost nothing about EVs and how to charge them. Show a charging station visit in the reviews, how to use them, different cables, different types of chargers. When you might want to use each different type. Stuff like that will make people really understand how the car can work for them in a much easier way than they expect. But overall, very good review. Glad any time an EV is on the channel. Can’t wait for the e-tron full review.

I believe Jaguar plan to roll out a similar charging network to that of Tesla. Not sure how quickly this will happen though.
@christill
@christill 6 жыл бұрын
Oscar Brady No one will do anything on the scale of the supercharger network. All the manufacturers are so far behind that their only option is to work together on building out CCS. But it’s unlikely that CCS will ever work as seamlessly as the supercharger network does. I’d like to see interoperability between different charging standards and eventually convergence. I think we’ll see adapters at some stage that will allow CCS cars to use the supercharger network and vice-versa, but I think those two standards will continue alongside each other for years. And Chademo will probably hang on as well for ages because of the success of the Leaf (and to some extent the outlander PHEV).
@riggald9864
@riggald9864 6 жыл бұрын
There are ~10,000 Supercharger chargepoints worldwide. There are ~8,000 CCS chargepoints. In the UK, there are nearly 300 Superchargers, and nearly 1,100 CCS. In Europe, there are ~4,400 CCS. I haven't found out how many of the Superchargers are in Europe, specifically. The CCS standard does not allow adaptors - possibly because it uses cooled cables (and possibly cooled plugs) at high charge rates. Currently Supercharger maxes out at 135/145kW per pair of cars (so you might get 34kW if you are sharing a charger, you might get 120kW if you have a pair of chargepoints to yourself) Currently most CCS chargers are 50kW (and in the UK, all of them are atm), but there are 150kW, 175kW and 350kW chargers live in the USA and Continental Europe), and the rollout plans are for complete networks at the higher speed by 12 to 18 months from now Supercharger Gen 3 has been teased, and I think it is probably going to help when two cars share a Supercharger.
@christill
@christill 6 жыл бұрын
Matt Boyd Of course it’s not necessary to use the car in normal life. I drive a short range EV to work every day and can do reasonable length trips without having to worry about range. But a lot of people buy a car and they want to know it can do any trip they could possibly go on. If I had a Tesla, I would very rarely need to use the superchargers, but just knowing they’re there would be a very nice feeling. The i-Pace and the e-tron will still sell without a supercharger network, but drivers of those cars will certainly not be getting the premium charging experience on long road trips. I don’t know where exactly people all rent cars to go on road trips. You definitely wouldn’t do it in the U.K. since car rental is insanely expensive.

Great Review... I have been waiting for this automobile for over two years now. I have put in my deposit. I certainly hope to have the vehicle by Christmas of this year. I think sometimes people need to remember that anything built by a human being will not be perfect. Therefore, some of the negative remarks seem rather silly to me. I think we have come a very long way. Then again, these are my thoughts. Because I am so very excited to get my vehicle. When I do I will have to manage it like crazy. Because at first I will not have the 240 volt home charge. I will have the standard USA household. But, I'll not let it get too low. (If I do, I'll start around 5:00PM the evening before) But I'l have access to 480 when I'm at work--or DC option. Can't wait! Very excited!.

I finally got to test drive it in the USA. It was a prototype HSE edition. It was great, better looking in person. Fast as all high end electrics are. Liked having some of the physical buttons as I often change setting using tactile response. Fit and finish looked great. Build quality looked great as well. Shorter than a typical SUV/CUV which you don't notice in the videos. Also the front end looks more aggressive than it appears in the video. Rides great. I pulled nearly a G on some of my turns. I know this because it has an accelerometer when you go into dynamic mode. I don't know if a Tesla has that.

Thomas you missed the artificial sound while accelerating. Probably Jaguar has tried to used all the different sounds to compensate for the missing engine sound. Moving machines (vehicles) feel more alive & characterful if they make some sounds - probably that’s why the loud indicators, the loud beeps and the artificial accelerating ‘warp speed’ sound.

There should be customisable sounds for the user to edit, this will be the future of electric cars and a way to put to use the incredible sound and surround system they will all have in the end. The will be a future business in sound design that will come about...imagine the possibilities. A phone app could already do this with the force feedback that it has linked to the bluetooth sound system

It's brilliant that now a premium manufacturer has the option of premium fabric on the seats as well as synthetic leather, I like fabric trim & hate leather. Always seems a bit silly to me to extol the virtues of vegan interior materials when the manufacture of the vehicle itself is very harmful to our planet, not only in metals and plastics but now Lithium..not to mention sourcing the electricity used to power the car. Anyway, leather interiors are different nowadays from the soft, squidgy, well worn leather we used to see- and I actually prefer fabric/velour etc for the most part.

Nice review as always. My only complain is that you didn't mention the main downside of this car: charging speed. It really falls behind the competitors both in fast charging (max 100 kw DC) and in normal charging (max 7 kw AC). Especially the 7 kw AC is really strange. Even the Ioniq does better than that. And this is important because there are many 22 kw publicchargers that will be basically useless with the i-Pace. For the rest I really like the car!

Chargers are large, heavy and hot. It makes little sense to include them inside the vehicle. They should be stationary. If you don't like the 7kW limit, install a DC charger, and the limit increases immediately to 100kW
@drone_video9849
@drone_video9849 6 жыл бұрын
Kirk Nangreaves I just watched it again and you are correct. He said with a DC charger it was one hour. That’s very good. I personally don’t. Car of the charger is in the car or In My garage. I would assume DC charging stations would be available just like gas stations. I early like this model and will be looking very close at it. But there is lots of good choices coming out. Like Audi etron and Porsche claims to have one soon too. But I like this model, but maybe the Audi a bit more.

The Ioniq also has just a 1-phase charger. But the higher efficiency means it charges a few more km every minute. And the smaller battery of course means it fills up faster.

From the Jaguar website: 'Ground clearance fully laden (mm) 142' They don't bother stating the unladen ground clearance. I don't know if the optional air suspension allows variable or increased ground clearance. Increased ground clearance is useful in real world conditions. The moving door handles will be a source of trouble in future in terms of reliability.

Very good review, Thomas, as usual. I actually think I like the orange as it gives a sporty, fun look. Seat comfort is very important so thanks for addressing that. Perhaps the inability to change the temperature without danger is a show stopper for my wife who runs hot, cold, hot, cold. Also, for me a big draw of the Tesla S is its self driving capability, which is considerably better than the I-Pace, no? Kudos for being sensitive to the presence of a huge mass of a dashboard in front of the driver. I've never liked that feeling of encroachment on "my space". Thanks again for a great review.

Interesting review, thanks. Am having test drive next week and may be getting one to replace my bmw i3 at the end of this year. I think the dark wood looks ghastly (especially the panel in the rear door)- I thin the interior is a bit too conservative and would prefer something more like in the i3. I think people are overstating the charging difficulties - having done 34,000 miles in 2.5 years (only about 300 petrol miles from Rex) this will be a lot easier than the i3 and will mostly charge at home overnight. It is expensive and I would have liked to have choice between this and Merc equally, Audi etron and bmw ix3 but I need a new car in December this year, want electric and five seats and don’t like Tesla all that much. Plus as I live in the countryside the wading depth in the I pace is very useful

Generally less brake useage, yes less pad and disc wear but more seized caliper repairs as Mitsubishi iMeVs drivers discovered. But still 2/3 of all roadside particulates are from road contact - bigger & heavier vehicles need bigger tyres and 4mm of 245 R18 tyre is a lot more than 4mm of 155 r15 tyre.

@Autogefühl - what exact consumption did you get? Did Jaguar put some disclaimer since it is pre-series, in relation to consumption? Some of last tests record very high consumptions - average of 27,4 kWh. Jaguar has no official statement to clarify if this is due to pre-series or if this is what final version is.

Thomas.. great detailed review as always.. As one of the first deposit holders in the UK I have been waiting a long time, but am going to have to keep waiting... Just a few subtle points to consider for city driving. The turning circle is quite wide at 12m, the width of the car would restrict it in London where we have some width restrictions. Finally its a shame that Jag don't include some of the essential safety kit like adaptive cruise, emergency breaking, lane assist as standard on all models. The lack of rear screen wiper maybe fine when the car is moving, but not first thing in the morning when its all iced and snowed up. Jag seem to have lost the plot with wheel sizes and styling.. EVs needs range friendly wheels and tyres. 19 inch would be fine.. Why on earth 22?. Its a great looking car and lovely cabin. Lets hope Jag address the issues raised and of course get a charging network partnership including chargers at all JLR dealers.

Autogefühl thanks Thomas. I think it may be slightly wider than the model S. Perhaps it would be good to perform some city driving and parking tests on all reviews. Examples of U turn and minimum realistic width restriction.

It's narrower by about 7cm excluding mirrors. iPace 1895mm, Model S 1964mm, Model X 1999mm!

Nigel Pritchard thanks for the info. What is the source of the data? Have you checked the turning circle too?
@npritchard
@npritchard 6 жыл бұрын
iPace from the online manual, Tesla from the Tesla website. Actually I just double checked and it has the Model X at 2070mm so even bigger than I thought. You do have to be careful though because some sites mix up widths without mirrors and with mirrors folded. Turning circle is as you said for the iPace and 11.3m for the Model S again from the Tesla web site. Model X 12.4m from owners manual.

Seating starts with fabric, at least in Europe. Optional there is that Kvadrat seating available, but it also contains wool. I did not hear yet wether you can change the steering wheel. If the dealer tells you, please also respond here

I like the exterior lines of the car. It's a very stylish sedan/hatch. I like maybe any other color than orange. The interior looks luxurious but time to lose the glossy wood and shiny black plastics. Screens have the issues that screens usually have. Ventilation controls look tricky to operate. I like the open console and different shapes of the upper portions. This car wasn't meant to explore new materials, so it's traditional inside. Rear legroom not great. But, good to see Jag make an electric car.

From the Jaguar website: WLTP Consumption from - kWh/100miles (kWh/100km) 34 (21.2)** Does that electricity consumption figure take charging losses into account? Or is it just the electricity used inside the vehicle itself ignoring charging losses?

Thomas - in the event of flooding across the road what depth of water can you cross before the battery gets wet and the car stops?
@autogefuehl

Good question. But imho electric vehicles are less sensitive to water since a combustion engine needs air, so sucks the water at some point and stalls.

Those big dials look nice and good in the hand...but again... laggy as hell. Just this small lag (when changing dial function) is enough to avoid this vehicle. It is not OK for a change to happen for longer than 0.1seconds.

Great to see another high end EV on the market as an alternative to Tesla. Seems like Jaguar have targeted more conservative buyers here with a more traditional cockpit design and ICE mimicking front grille. This probably makes it a more comfortable "first EV" for many luxury ICE owners scared off by Tesla's clean slate approach to motoring and lack of heritage. Personally I prefer the space-age Model X as a practical family hauler with it's airy minimalist cabin and fantastic UI, but I can see what Jaguar did here.

It strikes me that Jaguar might have an opportunity here if they produced a version with a smaller battery, say 65Kwhr. This would still have a 200 mile range while losing some weight being beneficial for handling. So it might be sold for a few thousand Euro cheaper and everybody wins. Also, they might have been the first to join Tesla if they had bough into Tesla charging system. It would have been good PR as well as giving their customers a great fast charging system. No doubt some company will be the first to do it.

I just tried this car for a couple of hours, really impressed but not sure about it being 7kw charging on the AC posts plus having to depend on public chargers, my experience in Great Britain of these chargers is poor, often broken, often ICEd and that’s where Tesla win hands down

Most of the other reviews of the i-Pace in Portugal showed the limited off road use of the car with the air suspension in the raised position, and the system the car employs for going up and down hill (a sort of cruise control for off road) they also showed the car had a wading depth through water. We are not talking land rover type off roading but still impressive for the car
