Quite a long video on how to change the front wishbones on the drive without dropping the sub frame. 2001 X Type 2.5 V6 AWD Petrol Manual.
This is a hard job but can be done with patience, a heat gun and a big hammer. You will also need 15mm, 18mm sockets, spanners and a TX55 Torx bit. A selection of levers is handy. Just so you know afterwards I had to get the garage to do the front wheel tracking.

That looked such a faff on the drive with a few stands, I could sense the frustration and swear words from here in Scotland. This man deserves a beer!

The main difficulty is that everything is seized and needs heating to release.

Great job, my colleague! Very useful video for all X-typers, cheers! Let me add two details from my side. First: I also removed the rear bush bolts of the front control arms upwards and installed them from downside up, tightening the nut from the upside. Now, when I've to change wish bones, I just remove bolts down and I don't need to lower the front sub-frame, as manual says. Here my method doesn't differ from yours. But the second detail is, that when removing the wishbone, I pull it out of the subframe, releasing the bushes, (CV joints allow you to pull it out) and only after that I remove the ball joint. And vice versa, when installing the wishbone, first I install the ball joint, and then insert the bushes on their places. Thus I avoid pressing on the installed wishbone with a bar, because the rear bush contains oil inside and may easily leak. I hope, my comment will be useful for fellow X-typers, sorry for such a long and detailed description.

Thanks for your valuable comment. I was not strong enough to get the bolts in the way you do it!

Hi, your videos helped me a great deal last year whilst I was off work, I managed to renew all the suspension and bushes on my xtype as well as many other jobs it needed doing, and as a result passed it's mot with no advisories, after just reading what yours has just failed on and it's advisories I really feel for you, if I lived closer I'd be more than happy to help you as I really enjoyed doing mine last year, hope to see many more videos of you working on the xtype, take care

Thanks Jay. It failed on a stop light and a bit of welding which my friend will sort out. All the advisories have been on there for years!

@@johnnysevengun yeah mine's due again in a couple of months, hopefully I done enough to it last year that it'll be fine, it's only done about 200 miles since the last mot as well as I'm back in work now and have a company vehicle, I must of spent about 4 months and around 1500 quid on it last year haha maybe more than the cars worth but I like to do a job properly like yourself

@@jaygardner9659 I think we've only done about 2000 miles max. It is sitting around in all weathers that kills them!

@@johnnysevengun well 2 of the things I did to it as well was wire brushed it all and undersealled it, and put waxol in the sills and chassis and basically anywhere I could put it, it works brilliantly

@@jaygardner9659 I have always used Waxoyl but the trouble is the moisture eats it from the inside of the floor pan. Its taken 20 years to get through so shouldn't complain.

Great video, I'm in the middle of this on my x type diesel, looks like it will be exactly the same. I was doing a completely different job, ( Spring and Wheel bearing) but then damaged the boot on ball joint so it had to be done, to be fair it was scrap like. My wishbone hasn't arrived yet, this has made me a bit scared but I'm not in a rush, and I have already disconnected the track rod end so a bit more flexible, and my Pinch bolt actually snapped which was actually quicker in the end, I was able to order one from jaguar which arrived in 2 days. Thanks again for making the video.

Good luck. It can be done. Use lots of heat on the seized bolts.

Great info, if I had to do it. I had the control arms replaced recently (lazy me). I noticed a smoother ride over the road after the change. The mechanic also put the one bolt back, nut facing downward -- in case the arm needed attention ever again.

The correct way is to lower the front subframe down up to 50mm then the rear bolt comes out easy

These videos are for people who want to do the job at home for free and do not have a fully equipped workshop with lift and specialised tools.

Long time no see! My X type as I told you in another video is also extremely seized.. I don´t think I would be able to do that...

Lower sub frames 30mm first

The whole point of the videos is to show how it can be done on the drive with minimal tools - not in a fully equipped workshop. Also if you look in KZfaq you will find at least two videos where the subframe bolt has rotted in the frame and cannot be turned. AutoDoc do a video showing it done in a workshop - look up Mondeo wishbones.
